0:43 They explain this in lore. Its really difficult to be in a dogfight without sound. You have no awareness of the location of the enemy, so ships have sensors installed that track the location of ships, then speakers mimic the sounds of lasers and engines. Its one of those "read the books" kind of facts.

Kyle, sorry to hear you're not feeling well man. Do ion engines have the highest specific impulse when you include some kind of matter / anti-matter engine? I thought that would be virtually 100% efficient since all the fuel (matter and anti-matter) is converted directly to energy. Just curious...
@ShouldHaventJoined

The use of anti matter changes the drive since with anti matter you are colliding opposites at each other destroying both for the byproduct being energy.

@Kyle: If I remember right, the TIE fighters are so fast and nimble because they have nothing. No life support, no shields, nothing but steel, engines and blasters. The pilots need dedicated suits so they can breath in their TIE fighters. So, they have much less weight to them compared to other ships. And, I guess they just have stronger, more futuristic Ion engines to boot?

That is a matter of semantics at that point. They are finite in that at some point you stop firing. At what length does it become a bolt? The point is that they accelerate ions at a target. They are a in essence a gun.

The only reason TIE Fighters could or are real, are due to their design. Seethe inner mechanisms are quite simple,as gravity pulls you down, the ION engine could be forcing it up. With another ION engine propelling it forward. However, the mass, would be to great for the outer ship. Meaning that the first ION Engine,is pointing at a 29 Degree angle. As it propels it forward and up at the same time, however, when it reaches a certain speed, the engine,in a way, will supress itself for a brief second or two. As it shifts from the angle to a completely straight engine, meaning that the Fighter,is now going straight. But by that time,it is going so fast, that gravity is barely affecting it. But the rudders,or turning system,is quite complex. The rudders have to be on top,and bottom of the sides,so it can actually pull up,and turn. The way by turning it,is by having separate levers, and a button to make it one lever. As each lever controls a different side. Then when it becomes one lever, there are buttons on it to control the both, right separately, left separately, and to go up and down. It needs to feature oxygen tanks so the pilot can breathe,as the speed, would almost make you loose all your air. My head hurts now.

I think the lore from Elite Dangerous is the best I've heard to explain why all Sci-Fi has "sound in space". In Elite, the backstory to having sound is that space IS silent, but your ships computer generates a soundscape based on external sensor data for the benefit of the human pilot who is used to, you know, hearing stuff. When your cockpit is breached from hostile weapons fire or whatnot, it goes silent for a few seconds until your emergency space helmet deploys, in which case the sound is muted.

You might hear the screech of the engines because the engines are forcing out particles in order to create thrust. These particles travel through space and eventually hit something like the window of a spaceship, vibrating it, creating sound inside the cockpit.

Some ion thrusters actually have the potential for higher thrust. Magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters that use lithium for fuel can have the thrust of a chemical rocket with the efficiency of an electric rocket (and the power consumption of a small city but this is Star Wars), and VASIMR thrusters can toggle between high thrust and high efficiency modes. Given a suitably miniaturized power source there's no reason that a very high thrust ion engine couldn't be built.

Kyle mentioned in this episode a very relevant question why is there a sound for the ships in space? Well it turns out there's probably already some valid and great answers to that question. Ya see those ships are being driven by humans and sentient beings that evolved in an atmosphere. As any sound geek or nerd worth their salt will tell you if a sentient being sits in a sound proofed room that cancels all sound it will slowly unnerve the living daylights out of them because we as sentients being require sound as an input to better interact with all of our environment. To experiment with this watch jaws or any horror movie you haven't ever seen before without sound and then rewatch it with sound, even though you'll know what is going to happen you'll likely be very scared at the appropriate moments because of the sound cues that occur slightly before the scare takes place. So in essence those vehicles play those sounds to the occupants to tell the occupants when their allies are close and when enemies are approaching and these sounds are constantly happening on some level to put the pilots mind's at ease during their trip through the vacuum of space. This also explains why the lasers have sounds associated with them as well. Those sounds are applied by the shipboard sensors to tell pilots of which direction and how terrible the threat is that is moving in the same space as they are. It's also likely that the different sides (the rebellion, and the empire, as well as the Resistance, and the New Order) have their own corresponding sounds for their own ships and those of the enemy force to help their soldiers and allies understand whom is a threat and also to hinder soldier of the opposing army from stealing their ships and using them against their own forces. I hope this clears that conundrum up for people. The sounds of the ships are there for us, the makers and pilots and passengers of those ships. They don't exist in the vacuum of space those sounds exist to repel the harsh reality of the vacuum of space from interfering with our stable flow of consciousness and organized function as the sentient beings we evolved into.

If I'm Correct but i believe that the TIE fighter has an advanced ion engine that is on a pivot that would allow the TIE to wok as a VTOL having it spin to the front to rapidly slow. this also explains why they turn the way they do i from the two engines spinning in different directions.

You could explain the sound it makes as the stream of ions bouncing off the cockpit of the other ships transmitting the sound that way, but the simple answer is "the rule of cool" People expect to hear sound from fighters, and so they made a rule that space ships make sounds in the movies.

The thrust level of an ion engine could be increased. From what I understand the main reason they cant just put more power and propellant into it is because there are erosion issues with the ionization grid. If those were to be solved you could potentially make ones that flow more propellant, and get as much thrust as you want.

I like the explanation used by Elite Dangerous, in that the sounds are artifically created by the ships A.I. so that the pilot can accurately orient themselves to the goings on in space. otherwise in such vision deprived cockpits the pilots would have no way of tracking the action going on outside the ship.

+John Hurley Particle impact pressure, essentially gas pressure, is how chemical rockets work and is part of the reason why they are so inefficient. Even at over 10 MPa (>100x atmospheric pressure) in their combustion chambers, they really struggle to get past a couple of percent of the fuel efficiency of an ion engine. That's why instead of trying to design some compression contraption, electric thrusters (of which ion engines are a variation) focus on improving the electric part.

A question for Kyle: If a TIE fighter is in hot pursuit of a target at REALLY high speed, what would happen if it fired its laser/energy cannon/gun thingy at that speed? I guess what I'm asking is the same as what happens if Superman fires a gun as he is flying. This sort of stuff keeps me awake at night. That and the looming threat of war, ya know.

Theoretically you could attach smaller rocket engines to the tie fighter to accelerate, and the ion thruster to maintain velocities. I would recommend talking about antimatter propulsion, or faster than light travel (space bubble travel)

True, but what I suggested was scientifically feasible, while to do that we would need massive leaps in theoretical, and quantum physics.

Well honestly it's not hard to imagine how an ion engine could have grater acceleration, you simply have to increase the number of ions it spits out and or the speed they're spit out at. That said you may have trouble getting it to the point it could match a TIE fighter's acceleration and maneuverability.

You can hear sounds in space with the assistance of the Babble fish. Not only can the Babble fish allow one to understand all forms of spoken communication, but also provides sound effects for objects in a vacume. TIE fighters are actually pretty quality made. For their lack of shields, they're at least twice as maneuverable as an X-Wing, even being able to fly backwards and straight up SIDEWAYS

This is assuming that advanced, alien tech doesn't allow their ion engines to accelerate fast enough to pull those kinds of maneuvers; our version of ion engine tech is arguably relatively basic.

since the ions ejected from the ship are having a very high velocity i guess we can use the relative equation of mass( or maybe momentum ) which is says that mass increases exponentially .all we have to do is provide enough energy

I think your case with the Tie fighter is a case of volume vs method. Taken the assumption that these civilizations has been playing around with Ion engines for a while, I'd personally expect the final design would look like a combination of a cluster engine feeding through a cyclonic system to get the thrust you require. And yea, that'll be a lot of plasma.

just wondering. the ion engines we make might be meager. but is there something preventing an engine working with the same principle from shoving a large quantity of the same ions out of its pipes. i mean the issue with nasas ion engines is the low amount of matter that is used in the propulsion. wouldnt more mass being pushed out with the same speed translate to more thrust. with the added bonus of positively charged particles repelling each other so with a lot of positively charged particles behind you, you would actually have something to push against, (with more positively charged particles).

Maybe the "twin" in twin ion engine isn't saying TIE fighters have two ion engines, but the twin ion engine in Star Wars is actually somehow utilizing a combination of two different types of ions to exponentially multiply the force & acceleration produced by the engine? (on a different note, where exactly _is_ the engine/thrusters on a TIE fighter?)

question: Wouldn't the act of shooting laser blasts towards its enemies also be too much for an ion engine to compensate for, and wouldn't that make for a very jerky ride? and How well would a tie fighter deal with atmosphere? Would there be too much friction, thus making the ion engine worthless? Are there any ion engine applications that are being used now on earth?

Question: If you were a spec of light, everything around you is moving at "light speed" relative to you. So why is it impossible to move matter at light speed if it already is at light speed (kinda)? If an ion engine constantly accelerates, but it doesn't move relative to itself, then shouldn't it be able to approach light speed eventually?

I've always assumed that the maneuvering of a tie comes from a complex array of centrifugal panels that open and close on its wings according to a program that converts the pilot's movements into the maneuver that would match. By the way it sounds from the video, the propulsion system of a TIE is so energy efficient, that it doesn't need solar panels to keep moving forward, rather, supply this panel system with the energy it need to function.

in order to counteract the acceleration problem... couldn't it be a hybrid chemical/ion engine? Chemical fuel for acceleration and swift movements, and Ion engines for speed maintenance and fuel conservation? going to admit that I don't know a tonne about rockets and shit, but that makes sense to me.

I think an idea might be that what we have is an ion engine is the most primitive form of an eye on engine in comparison to the TIE fighter in Star Wars, what I think is that they figure out a way to make the ion engine as efficient as it is be as powerful as something like a chemical rocket, how they do that I don't know but it might have something to do with the wings and how they're so big and wide. Like its doing a 1000 of those engines at once, like mass quantity of miniature engine forcing the speed.

The reason TIE Fighters are able to engage in Atmospheric Flight is because they have Magnetic Based Armor. With Magnetic Based Armor, which functions as another type of Shield, where it could Grab Air Particles to Move & Maneuver. As a Shield, it is Capable of Blocking & Deflecting Micro Particles, but nothing as big as the Rocks around Hoth (Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back).

This sounds like EARLY jets. They could go fast, much faster then prop planes of the time, but, for example, I will be using the Messersmitt Me262. It took a while to get up to the speeds that props could not match in level flight, whereas the props, coming off of a runway, will take off MUCH faster then the Me262. And now, jet engines are so advanced, we are having them takeoff straight up! This is just the exact same thing! After a while, we will have refined the design to where it CAN do these things! HAVE HOPE! A NEW HOPE FOR TIE FIGHTERS!!!

What if you put an ion engine, or an array of ion engines, inside another larger ion engine? It'd have pre-accelerated particles that go through the process a second time creating an even faster particle, along with the second engine having a vastly larger output. If you get the particles fast enough, could you not have fast acceleration and maneuverability?

A TIE fighter canonically also has a fusion reactor built in. Perhaps via the use of superconductors, they're managing to channel absolutely ludicrous amounts of power into the engines, thus accelerating the ions to relativistic velocities?

what about a hybrid between an ion engine and a "traditional" engine? it uses mainly the ion engine when at cruise control in space, but uses the other engine to get the ship to a speed, and could even use a present day fighter jet engine when cruising in earth like athmosphere planets
