I grow in 4'wide beds & the paths in between are 15-16"wide. Beds get 1" of compost a year & the paths 2" of woodchip. Both are subsumed into the soil over a similar amount of time. I don't have borders between paths & beds, which allows my plants to send out roots into the paths & oh boy, do they like rooting into the base of the woodchip layer - no more than 3" down. Thus I just leave the composting woodchip where it is.

Same! In our new garden I’ve just left the wood chips in place in our pathways and I add more every year. The squash beds in particular send their roots WAY out from under our concrete block beds.

I would put cardboard fown to kill the grass and this woll compost down with the woodchips. Charles Dowding no dig videos are my go to in the UK

We’ve done that exact thing in other areas. Works great!

Which way are your arches oriented? North south east west? I want to install some in my garden this year. But I don't want to mess up and shade out some of it

Hey, they're oriented with the long dimension east-west. A bit of shade can be good--we put our lettuce and spinach just to the north of it, so that they get some summer shade--it helps delay the inevitable bolting. Other good options are the brassicas (broccoli, cabbage, kale...) and any root crops like beets or carrots. They all do fine, sometimes better, with a bit of midday shade in the summer.
