@@ahmed6270 In Arabia before the advent of Islam in the 7th century CE, a variety of different marriage practices existed and the most common recognized types of marriage at this time consisted of: marriage by *agreement,* marriage by capture, *marriage by mahr,* marriage by inheritance. In India for example, nikah takes regional forms & is called shaadi (Urdu) or biye/biya (Bengali). In Turkey, it's called dugun. The regulations governing marriage were based upon the *Arabs patriarchal system* [father is the Head of Family]. That is why the *marriage contract* Nokah is made between the suitor & the "guardian" i.e. the father or the nearest male relative of the bride, the latter's consent not being regarded as necessary. However, the bride has to attest the socially & *mutually agreed contracted marriage by signature* or thumb/palm impression. In Islam, marriage with blood relations such as marrying father brother's daughter as well as polyandry [more than one husband] are prohibited. Polygamy [more than one wife or concubine] were allowed due to the then historical context in which bloody battles were common & the pitiful plight of uncared widows & her adolescent girls turned orphans was very common. Quran addressed this issue & allowed victor males of the battles to concubine widows or orphans, better than leaving them to their hapless fate but polygamy is permitted to resolve a social crisis & not as a licence to satisfy one's *lustful desires* with up to four women or uncountable concubines. When Quran was revealed, Muhammad Bin Abdullah had to play a triple role as national leader, social reformer & a legislator. Here as in other fields of social legislation. But he left this world before could play a decisive role in improving the pathetic condition of women.
