How we do EC & Cloth Diapering

The few times I've mentioned doing EC (Elimination Communication) with my baby ya'll have tons of questions about it and clothing diapering! So in this video I'm answering some of those questions.
Also want to reiterate that I am not at all very experienced with these topics - we're just figuring it out as we go!

It's nice seeing more people talk about EC! I practiced EC and used cloth diapers with my two kids. I'm excited to do the same with my 3rd baby! What worked well for us at night was keeping a small potty and diapers right by the bed. For out and about we bring a travel potty and I sometimes use it on the changing table. My daughter completely potty-trained at 20 months 31 years ago. She was 100% cloth diapered. I was a stay at home mom and the stage was set (potty chair purchased and accessible, new fancy panties, books on using the potty, etc) and we constantly talked about going potty until I felt she was ready. We decided to begin and she literally trained in 2 days. The first night she wet the bed (bed was protected with waterproof mattress pad), and then she was dry after that day and night. I think cloth diapered children feel the wetness more and train earlier as Erin mentioned. I would definitely try EC if I was a new mom today. I think children are more capable than we think, even though some things seem so challenging to us, they are really open to grasping it. I would also share some tips for night training would first, be open to try a few nights wearing just regular undies and washing sheets if accidents. Full training success could be very near, just give it a try. Next, possibly in the beginning slightly decreasing liquid intake before bed. Finally, maybe consider waking your child once in the night to go potty, slowly building on their independent success. My daughter learned to just hold it, where my son needed to get up to go in the night. Each child is unique, as we all know. A sign your child may be ready for day and or night training are dry diapers, especially in the morning.

I totally agree on the timing of the workload. With my son we used disposables and he really struggled with the whole potty training thing. An as you Said you not only Show your kid to pee in the diapers, but that it doesn‘t matter that much, because the disposable diaper can hold at least one more load. An the you suddenly tell them, that all of this is wrong With our daughter we started using chloth diapers when she was one month old. We didn‘t do that much EC, but changed every diaper as soon as we noticed/ she signaled it was wet. At 20 months, we just let her run around naked (we were at Home all the time anyways thanks to covid) and she basically used the potty Right away. It was basically no work at all. :)

its so interesting to hear. we actually didn't do EC but the potty was nothing new for our daughter when she decided to start going to the toilet (it happened from one day to another when she was almost 18 month old). so it was basically like starting EC but with her being able to communicate more clearly. So what we did at night was taking the potty next to our bed (with a prefold inside to avoid spilling) with everything we need. so we do not even have to turn on the light and she can find back to sleep very easily. If you still want to use cloth diapers for night I would highly recommend using wool pants with some sort of flatwrap or something like the totsbots Bamboozle (don't know how you call Höschenwindel in English)..I hope that you will find a solution soon :)

My daughter at 8months would sit down and poop like that once I saw that I started to with her and put her on the potty and she got used to it. Still uses diapers she is now in 12months but what we do is pay attention to the cues has she said. And also we usually put her on the potty after every meal and waking up from a nap. Whatever she does if she poops or just pees or nothing we just stay there speak to her about our day and she has never seem to be developing any adverse symptoms to it. And now even when she does poop on her diaper whenever she finish she comes running to me and grabbing me to clean her up. Don’t know if it’s good or not what we have done so far. But I think it really depends on your kid and your family lifestyle and your parenting style.

What we did with my son was buy compostable diaper inserts. They are more absorbent, but can be backyard composted if it's just pee. That was many years ago, so I don't remember the brand, but it was a good nighttime solution for us. Not as ideal as cloth, but my son started waking up dry before we made it through a pack, so I considered it an okay compromise.

What fabric inserts are you using? Maybe mixing different types will give more absorbancy.

For night times and leaking. We used fitted cloth diapers ( mothereez) and a bummis insert. Then a wool diaper cover. No leaks ever in this system.

I haven't tried it, but I've heard that fitted cloth diapers with a wool cover is a surefire overnight solution for cloth diapering.

Hi there are some really good Night cloth diapers from European brands like Petit Lulu, Anavy and Totbots (UK) in the XL size (about 10 -35kg) you will need a cover over them and they soak up really well throughout the night

I know I am a bit late to this video but we used Little Lamb fitted bamboo nappies with coverage for my now potty trained 3 year old for night time and they held everything!! We also used them for longer car rides and those days where we knew we couldn't change the diapers as often... 😉

I'm from France and I think here it's a common knowledge that learning potty to children under 2 (approx) can be destructive for their mental, even if you succeed. I try to be open-minded about it, but we hear so much about psychologist saying that they're going to have different psychological problems later because of that, that it's really difficult for me to not deeply think it's dangerous, even though it might not be. I'm still watching and thanking you for sharing your experience though. And you actually learned me something since I didn't even knew the EC name.

Do you know of any studies about it? I've only found some possible concerns regarding holding waste too long, and that's obviously something to be mindful of (but with EC the goal isn't to teach your baby to hold but to listen to their body and communicate). Potty training and Elimination Communication is very different. Potty training too young is hard for baby mentally if they’re not ready, because they’re already used to going in diapers. Elimination Comunication just teaches child from birth to communicate when they need to go. Elimination Communication is not the same as basic potty training

In France we also have common knowledge like "eat 5 vegetables and fruits a day" (which is a random number, but a great thing), or "milk help making the bones strong" (which is not totally true, and persist because of the milk lobbying), and things like that..

For the feeling of being wet, you could use a reusable liner if you don't have a pocket diaper.

It is kind of a weird name, but it means teaching your baby to communicate about their need to eliminate waste.
