Wonder if you could use treated plywood on the bed. Nice setup. I think. I would do it a bit different, but I do not know anything about feeding so many hives. I would use deep-cycle batteries which would be charging while the truck is running and a dc pump or an inverter and a AC pump. There would be a pressure switch in the system and if the pump reaches that set pressure it would shut off the pump. I also would use a fuel type nozzle instead a valve.

I do sometimes. Not often. We do our best not to spill and colonies typically have their entrances reduced to 6 inches of they are strong or 2 inches if they are weak. Feeding in the evenings can help as the bees can work on it all night even if it is dropping into the mid 40's.

@kamonreynolds4 жыл бұрын
Syrup and honey are used for energy. warming the hive, flapping the wings, cooling the hive in summer with their wings, and even gorging on those to produce beeswax. Pollen and pollen sub are the Protein, fats, macro and micro minerals, and in the case of pollen a source of microflora. Pollen sub is not near as good as a quality income pollen or pollens. I typically don't feed pollen sub this time of the year since they are bringing the real thing in and they are wanting to slow down on brood rearing anyways

Hey Kamon, I was wondering when you decided you could justify a truck for your operation?
@kamonreynolds4 жыл бұрын
When the operation could pay for it. Keep in mind old trucks like this can be found for $2000-6000 dollars and even though they get poor fuel economy it is in my mind still worth it. I can put 4 tons on Big Red no problem (or more) and I only drive it 1500 miles at most in a year. Instead of buying a very used and expensive diesel that gets better fuel economy (and more power/speed) I settled for something that was still strong and didn't require a loan. Also, these old trucks are easier to work on and fix. Often times cheaper. Gas is pretty cheap when your only putting 1500 miles on a year. Mine was a fire hall truck and barely now has over 20,000 original miles. My way is not the way people do it much these days but I believe it makes alot of sense. Starting a business is hard. The fancy tools come AFTER the money. (that's why I don't have many fancy tools lol)

I cant get 2:1 to work just wants to crystallize on me in the feeders . not sure if the water or cool weather or what so i go 1.5:1 tops 1:1 is the norm ... Our fall flow was a bust cold wet frost . pollen flow was great .. Loosestrife flow in aug was great i pulled that off set it aside because i had on apivar strips on dont want to sell that honey ill just feed it back .

Poor bees..... LOL Yeah Ryan, 2:1 for me is just a pain in the buttocks! Our fall pollen flow has been top notch also. The nectar was hit and miss. Some yards were hungry and some were heavy. So odd. Amazing what 8 miles can do sometimes. Is loosestrife honey a flavorful honey? I am not sure if we have any of that in this neck of the woods
@hootervillehoneybees86644 жыл бұрын
Loosestrife is one of those terrible invasive weeds they try to tell bee keepers is bad .. If you hate long flows black pollen not for you . ill send you some .. gives pollen for a month nectar 3 weeks .. Nectar is green like the color of antifreeze no mistaking it .. Honey is clear light has a green tint to it .. I sent some to a honey tasting contest in North Carolina won third place .. Was alot great honeys like sour wood . some judges picked the loosestrife over the sourwood .. I got pound of that sourwood sent me that stuff really grew on me wouldn't mind target some of that some day .. They say purple loosestrife is in every state so im sure Tennessee has it .. It likes wet lands grows on the edges of marshes and ditches around here . i know people who use it to dry up wet spots in their yards .. I would have got alot loosestrife honey but i needed to down size the boxes get some really good mite treatment's going .. Honey i did take was just as the flow started in aug before i hit them all with apivar .. Still got solid box of honey from it but not safe to eat with the apivar from what im.reading .. I dont regret breaking down everything down sizing cause id probably lost most my colonys .. Mites are really bad up here this year not sure why mild winter maybe .. I know alot bee keepers getting counts of 50+ mites right now and thats after treating them with apivar formic oav just cant get ahead of them .. Probably alot colonys crashing right now in this chilly weather mite bombs .. I seem to be doing good very low mite counts glad i didn't wait . bees have never looked better .. Ive got 108 mostly singles going to use that to expand into 300 next summer .. I have most of equipment just needs new foundation paint boxes .. Fix boxes .. Lots of winter work getting ready .. Once i get those done ill get back into nucs next year just going to enjoy it making honey and strong splits not stress on making orders and taking to much from mine to fill them .. Way mites are this year id expect alot folks be looking for bees come spring .
