HOW WE GET INTERNET IN OUR VAN! Our OFF-GRID mobile WI-FI set up in a campervan or motorhome.
With us both working on the road remotely, digital nomad style, one of the questions we are regularly asked is "how to get wi-fi in our van" and "how we stay connected on the road?"
Now we are certainly no experts, so, this is just our set up and how it works for us. We've no idea if its the best mobile wi fi system out there for your campervan or motorhome but we can tell you, after two years of continuous use, in the UK and in Europe, that it's worked great for us.
To be honest, after finishing our van build and wanting to get on the road to live van life in europe, we just bought what looked the best, as obviously with uploading all this content to KZbin, social media and lots and lots of streaming, we wanted a good wifi setup.
Your network provider will play a huge part in how good your connection is, so please bare that in mind, we've tried the cheap ones and they are no good for Emilys work as they have real trouble connecting to her remote server, this is just a problem we had and don't have the technical knowledge as to argue the why, we just know the signal was never as good and we had problems.
FOR SOME REASON I CANT PASTE THE LINK TO WHAT WE'VE GOT BUT JUST GOOGLE THE COMPANY 'MOTORHOME WIFI' AS THAT'S WHERE WE GOT OURS FROM.
(We don't have a discount code as this video is not sponsored, we just made it for those of you who are asking)

Hopefully you are enjoying this European travel series as much as we are and we are managing to show you just some of the stunning landscapes that France has to offer in this French travel vlog.
As usual, we have tried to include a bit of everything, some cinematic scenery mixed with our usual female van life foolery, we always love hearing what you lot think in the comments so do let us know, and as always, thank you for watching!
Follow us on our journey as we attempt to create a proper youtube travel series as we, two female travelers and vanlifers, attempt to travel across Europe in our rolling tiny home.

STARLINK - for those of you asking. Yes we will consider it, but only when the coverage is increased, so for example, it doesn’t yet cover Norway or sweden, in fact most of Scandinavia, so would have been useless on this trip. I believe it’s patchy in Scotland still and have heard mixed reviews when parked under an obstruction, trees etc. as the product improves we will definitely look at it but for now it’s much cheaper and more reliable to keep what we have. 😀😀 ALSO, I’m not saying everyone needs a setup like this, or if this is even the best, but for us who work online all the time a bigger system is required. This video is literally to answer the people that ask how we do it, and remember it’s a contract that provides the unlimited, not our system.

Starlink is actually (as per the last month) working halfway up in Sweden and Norway, but it is expensive, and Sweden, Norway and Finland has THE best mobile networks, you always get a decent connection, and most of the time you get a really good one too, Telia is the foremerly state owned telephone company and is usually the best in rural areas, BUT in citys they tend to be overloaded and sometimes the other networks might be better.

@@KristoferOlsson As I live in The northern half of Sweden, I am fully aware´that it doesn not work here yet, and Norway and Finland is paralell to Sweden, not north of it, if Starlink doesn't work there, it is a decition, either from Starlink, or from those countrys, because Starlink uses freqencys that those countrys might want to protect (as Sweden does around Onsala radio observatory, where Starlink is geofenced not to work). Much of Finland and Norway is way south of the line where starlink works in Sweden.

Lou, your clear-cut tech savey skills, created an excellent informative vlog! Here, in USA, it is one of the top subjects covered by nomad lifers,, then the topic of which power stations are best. Yes, Star link is overly dissected by review vlogs. It's too early to give a full review subjectively. Depending where you are located at the time, any major cities nearby to get any starlink coverage. Many of us, are on a waiting list, for when it will be available in one's area, (possible 2023??).. In the mean time , so many have the exact roof layout with a booster setup to a router box wiring inside vehicle. Some use their cell phone carrier products while others use products like "weBoost" 4G/5G, that covers all carrier networks for all of North America. Keep on streaming!!🤗

Hi both, when it comes to upgrading it might be worth looking at getting the items individually from the suppliers rather than as a “Motorhome” package. When I last looked it was about £100 more for the motor home Wi-Fi set rather than the same router from Teltonika (Motorhome Wi-Fi just put their own sticker on it) and the same antenna from Panorama.
@campervibe

Just out of curiosity when you tested the phones inside the van and you clearly got a much stronger signal from the aerial. However, whilst I appreciate that it wouldn't be practical for the use you need it for, would you have got a better signal using the second phone outside? To be honest I am amazed that you got such a strong signal through the aerial given where you are. Thanks again for another interesting video.
@campervibe
@campervibe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi David, sometimes we definitely do get a better signal if we take the phone outside the van, especially for phone signal for calls, sometimes that doesn’t work tho and usually the booster out performs a phone outside. However, with Emily needing a steady connection to both internet and phone, to keep going outside is not practical, especially if it’s raining or very cold, it wouldn’t work for zoom meetings either lol! 😂

I suspect part of the reason there is worse coverage in the UK is that you are limited to EE own network there. When you are roaming abroad EE likely have an agreement with multiple of not all companies that operate phone networks. I am not saying that there is not less infrastructure in the UK compared to the rest of Europe just that another operator might have coverage in some location that EE has not and you cant use it in the UK. So a non UK sim card will likely have better coverage then you have there. It is a bit paradoxical that foreign sim cards are better than the local for coverage. It is not something unique to the UK but is true for every country.
@campervibe
@campervibe 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, that’s definitely a big part of it, that’s why I showed our ability to switch networks whilst in Europe, not everyone knows you can do that. It would be nice tho if the uk could catch up a little bit tho lol. It is all very strange.

A decent router makes a lot of sense as well. Older cat4/6 dont use much or any multipe frequencies. Yours seem to be CAT7. Not too bad, but the benefit of a decent newer cat11+ makes a lot of sense. With my CAT19 i reach easily 300Mbit on 4G in NL. Even in crowded locations that makes a lot of sense: multiple slow links still makes a nice speed. Even at Camp quirky i had 2-10Mbit on average..

Very informative, thanks. There are a few 5G systems on the market that are about half the price of the one from Motorhome Wifi. Do you think that yours is that much better and, if so, in what way?

Hi Ewan, I’ve no idea if ours is better or not. That’s why I tried to explain in the video that I needed something quickly, that came as a kit that I could just install and plug and play. This vid is just to answer the people who want to know about our setup. All I can say is ours is good and it works, can’t comment on the cheaper ones or how good they may or may not be. Sorry I can’t be of more use.

Is that a 5G aerial booster into a 4G router? or a 5G router box? if it is the 4G portable router with sim slot, that's pretty good speeds you are getting, and I will just look into setting up that! :)

I'm not sure if I'm very unlucky or very inept but I have a house in Scotland and a house in Croatia and neither of them have mobile phone signals! I'm wondering if something like that booster would help on the roof of the house. I'm told that the nearest phone signal (Vodafone Hungary) is only 2G though. At the moment I get internet via a chain of 7 wifi links.

Well that depends on an individuals circumstance. Most people will spend £85 or more per month on fuel to get to work. We spend 0 on fuel as we work remotely, but £85 on internet for the two of us to be able to work each month makes complete sense, so for us it’s worth it. Like I say, everyone’s different with different needs and priorities. 😃

I have the same system. It's good but not amazing. I was slightly disappointed in it's boosting range. I work from my van usually around Scotland. Ive been in many locations where my phone doesn't pick up 4g but the booster will just get me internet but the download and upload speeds are so slow id struggle to be able to do something simple like an internet call with a client and then find myself needing to move. Often my phones internet works faster not going through the WiFi as well. So it left me feeling a bit like is it actually worth it, particularly as it's expensive? I'm still on the lookout for something better tbh

Yeah in the UK like Lou said it’s hit and miss, but we also have EE which apparently is the UKs best network 🤷🏻‍♀️ for Europe though it’s been amazing and that’s where we spend and intend to spend most of our time especially next year 😀🥳

Thanks for a good video and information. I never heard of you SIM-card. Do you have free unlimited data in Europe? This is very interesting. I have been working with mobile internet in over 17 years, and I never heard about unlimited Internet in Europe. I been working on a 5G solution for years, as roaming is extremely expensive. Do you still have unlimited data. I am Swedish and also work in Spain. It would be very interesting to know how you can get this unlimited data card for Europe. I didnt know it exist. Again, thanks for a very informative video:) Please can you check if its really unlimited. I been try to solve Internet solution for roaming travelers for especially for van life and motorhomes, and I cant find one operator except us that can offer roaming SIms for 400GB a month. When you say unlimited, so you have any data limits. Again, thanks for a great video:) /Nicklas

One day the world will catch up to the fact that reliable internet is an essential service and should be considered as important as air, water and electricity. Thos speeds you are getting are appalling in reality! When 5G infrastructure is available speeds of 300GPS are normal! In Australia, near me they finally built a new train line with loads of tunnels (Sydney Metro). As part of the design they included continuous high speed internet as part of the normal. I have connected at 250GPS flying through a tunnel (don't you love tunnels!) at 100kph (65mph).

Well that all depends where you are from. Like bath and barth, path and parth. To me a rOUTer is a woodworking tool. You spell route (as in the route I’m taking) with an ‘out’ but most pronounce it rOOt. Certainly in the uk anyway. I don’t know anyone but Americans who say rout?

@@campervibe Oh, nos, I am in a pronunciation war with one of my on-line heros! :-) Americans don't pronounce very much correctly, but route is one of those words that they do. I wood-working router does basically the same thing as an internet router. With one, you can make channels in wood, and with the other, you channel patterns of electrons about the place. So would you say "wood rooter" or "wood router". 🙂 Don't want to "mansplain" to a couple of fine women that I admire greatly. But I am an ex-teacher" and such evil habits die hard. In any case, English is such a horribly inconsistent language. Full disclose: I was a science teacher not an English language boffin, so either of us could be right??!! what kind of wild animals do you have to watch out for there?

In Sweden you don't have too look out for wild animals, we have wolfs and bears, but they stay away from you, and no venomous spiders and only one snake that is about as venomous as a wasp. That said, all those animals are rare to meet, so no worries. However, stay away from moose, they can and will attack people sometimes, and they will attack cars on the road too (well not attack, but run out in front of them)
