How we got into USC! || College Application Advice

Hey! So I'm not very good at sitting down in front of a camera and talking, but I was getting a ton of questions asking how I got into USC, so I really wanted to make the video anyways to help people out who are applying now and are curious. However, I thought it would be best to include my friends to hear more perspectives (and to calm my nerves lol). I hope this video is helpful, and best of luck with your college apps! Fight On!

Idk why I’m even watching this but as someone who just got accepted into USC I’d stress two things especially. The first is that even though USC claims to not track demonstrated interest, that is far from the truth and it could really help make your application. The second is that you really should get in touch with an admission rep or someone you know who works for the school etc. when I emailed my rep I found out that one of my common app essays was missing and if I had not contacted her I definitely wouldn’t have been able to fix the issue and get into USC. Blue bird TAKE AP CLASSES!!!! Im a senior right now and my biggest regret is that I didn’t take more AP’s sooner. AP teachers are usually much nicer, more lenient, and much less strict. The classes in my opinion are much easier cause they teach you more efficiently. Also, definitely think about what you’re gonna write about for your essays before hand.

I myself was like, “omg I can’t take ap classes because I’m not smart enough” but my sophomore year I got the courage to take one AP class and found out it wasn’t as bad as I thought. All I had to do was keep up with the work and try my best. Now I’m a junior and I am taking three AP classes which I would’ve never thought I could.

Thank you so so so so so much you don’t understand. I always doubted myself to apply to USC because I’m taking lower amounts of APs, have an average SAT, and a good GPA but not spectacular, but I was on the verge of stopping my essays (that I’m half way finished) because I thought it would be a waste of time to even apply when I knew the obvious answer was a rejection. After watching this, I will be finishing my essays and submitting them by Jan 15 for regular decision. This is so motivating ugh I wanna thank all of you!

Update: I got in!!! I was so shocked at first that I couldn’t believe it! I got admitted for spring 2020 however, but that’s just how usc does it. They admit freshmen as either fall or spring, so I will be starting school in January. For anyone out there who’s doubting themselves for applying, just try! You don’t need perfect academic stats whatsoever. The key is to be interesting. And I almost never applied.... miracles do happen :)

a d a s i s k o hey! my academic stats were very average. I got a 1390 on my SAT and only took a few APs. I think what helped me stand out was the fact that I’ve been a competitive figure skater ever since I was 4, and I even went homeschooled for it and then went back to public school etc. So basically, I had a lot of stories to share, and I truly think that was the key. Stats are one thing and very important, but being able to sound interesting and persuade the officers with your words is another thing. Good luck!!

I just recently got rejected from USC, and I’m heartbroken. I applied to Public Relations/Communications. I’m from NY. I have a very high unweighted/weighted GPA. I play sports and am in a lot of extracurriculars with a lot variety (VP of community service club, yearbook head editor, president of writing fellows program, 3 yr Varsity field hockey player, Nordstrom fashion ambassador, and so much more). My standardized test scores were average-above average for USC. I take all AP and IB classes. i’m thinking maybe my essays and the fact that i didn’t take my language (latin) senior year was what knocked me down, but I’m very sad about it.

When you say they track your interest, how exactly can they do that if you send an email or note to someone? For example, I went on a tour and later sent a thank you note (via Instagram) to my tour guide. Can you please explain this further? Also when do they start tracking? Thank you!

How do I get housing on USC's campus when I am doing my school work at Santa Monica CC? Is the housing really competitive for TTP students? Hey there! So if you got TTP, but wanted to live at usc and commute to SMC, the housing isn't through USC. Gateway, where I was living first semester is not USC Housing, but only usc students live there, if that makes sense. There are a few "off campus" apartments like that such as West, Lorenzo, Gateway, etc. It isn't that competitive to get a spot at one of these places either.

Hey Justin! I had a 4.1 (3.9 unweighted) and a 26 ACT. Since USC is a rigorous school I definitely think having competitive GPA/Test scores is important, but especially for any of the Fine Arts majors I think talent and creativity are more important. They just want to make sure you can keep up with the difficult classes at SC. But in my opinion I would make sure your essays and portfolio are the strongest part of your application.

You just have to convince the school that you will bring POSITIVE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES to the school. In other words, what can you bring to make the school a better place? Oops, kind of a year late and don't know if you're still answering questions. Do you know much about financial aid/scholarships? I'm from Chicago and a middle-class family, but I have 3 siblings (2 technically aren't in our household but still get some assistance from my parents, and my one brother is in college still) and money is kind of a concern. Is there any way to like increase the chances of scholarship? I want to be as genuine as possible and not "do things because I think they'll look good," but I also want to know if you've heard of any ways that people "stood out" or things they did that maybe they think is what got them their scholarship. What would you email a professor about as a prospective student who is going to be applying next year.

you can introduce yourself, where you’re from, what you intend on majoring in, etc., and asking questions about the academic programs they are apart of, about the specific school, their research at the university, and other things along those lines. Definitely keep it short though :) Introduce yourself (where you're from, your intended major, etc) and maybe ask questions about the academic programs that specific school has to offer, what research that professor is apart of, any questions about the school itself, etc. Keep it short and save any lengthy questions for a phone call/in person interview if possible. This is just a way for the professors to become more familiar with your name and to see your interest in the school!

It is my top school as it has a really good political science and public policy program as well as business (which is what my parents said I have to minor in). I want to go to USC for an computer science major and an Bachelor's in games desing from Bristol, UK I know I can go to Staffordshire (Best one in the UK) but in USC there's more opptunity then the UK in the gaming industry. Also I wanted to live in LA since I was 14 and saw USC is the best Uni for Games design in North America. I'm currently recruiting doing my GCSE Maths and English and hoping to get an grade 7 = A in both if not A in Maths and B in English. I got an Distincsion last year from my BTEC L1 I.T course what = an A GCSE grade so that's an GPA 4.0 and hoping to get it again in my BTEC L2 Media and for my L3 Games design course. After College I'm planning to stay another 2 years at my current college to do A-Levels in Computer science, Maths and Physics (What grades do USC want for A-Levels?) So yeah hoping to apply in 5 years. I do have an interest in history would that look good on my application? I think I'm the only family member who wants to go to study in a country where it has better opptunitys and my older family member has dropped out or have failed Uni.

Aaron Chien Most students don’t do things like that. Obviously, those people are awesome, but not everyone is doing things like that. If you’re at least active in your school and community, you’ll stand out. I’m a senior, I applied to 4 schools and I got into all 4. I’m on the executive board for 1 outside organization (that I interned for before and they liked me so much that I got on the executive board), but I have over 400 volunteer hours and I’m apart of 3 (in school clubs) and a student-county-government. My school doesn’t have a lot of APs ( no one signs up for them, so they get cancelled), but I’ve taken 8 dual enrollment classes. It’s really about being as proactive as you can!

Yes I was on full financial aid in high school. We were much higher than the average income for questbridge applicants but applied anyways and thats when I became a Questbridge Prep Scholar. I didn't make it to be a finalist, I'm assuming most likely because our income was higher than their average of I think 35,000? But even being a Prep Scholar looked great on resumes.

Because I did dual enrollment all throughout high school (my high school classes counted for both, I didn’t go to a college to take them) and usc did not accept any of those as college credit. If u take the classes at the college, then they might accept those, but that’s still case by case

what type of questions can you ask or what can you ask on emails to proffesors?

e medina you can introduce yourself, where you’re from, what you intend on majoring in, etc., and asking questions about the academic programs they are apart of, about the specific school, their research at the university, and other things along those lines. Definitely keep it short though :)

You mentioned that USC tracks demonstrated interest, they usc representative that came to our school let me know that they do not track demonstrative interest. Just wanted to clarify?

Mr.bucketsatwork honestly not sure, every school is different so we could have very easily gotten it mixed up, if so our mistake. But I do know I made sure to send a lot of emails, I visited a few times and made appointments with admissions staff, and had a phone interview with an SCA professor to at least have them familiar with my name, regardless if they tracked or not. Another thing could be that they changed it this year and now that aren’t. But again I don’t have a solid answer for you but I’d assume the admissions staff you talked to is more correct than us!
