I have an old raised bed that's had elephant garlic growing in it for around fifteen years now. There are literally hundreds of garlic cloves growing there and I think I originally planted a few sets. From time to time I take a fork( you can't pull them up by hand, all you end up with is greens and no bulb) and harvest a small clump but leave the rest alone until I need more. I've never had to pull all or replant. I realize I'm not getting the full production but at the same time they require no work on my part and that's more important to me as a senior. And I enjoy seeing bigger and bigger clumps of garlic each year as they sprout.

Well, it's been over a year since I started growing garlic. It does fabulous here in East Tennessee. It literally grows like weeds. I harvested last years crop, about 25 heads. I saved some and started more garlic from the biggest cloves. The best thing is that any small roots that remained in the soil, after digging and removing the garlic heads, eagerly volunteered, making more garlic cloves; about 5-8 per place where the garlic head grew. I divided them, and transplanted them this winter. Now I have about 110 new garlic plants. Some of them are dividing as well, so I just keep expanding the garden. And yes, they are turning into garlic heads; wonderful! I'm seriously thinking of growing garlic on my mini-farm to sell locally. It's just way too easy here!

I usually let the garlic flower and finish when the flowering stem browns it's time to dig out the garlic and the garlic tends to separate a bit if you cut the flowering stem...but they are delicious as greens.

Just wanted to say I followed your advice when planting last fall and they are really doing well so far, so thanks. I love how low maintenance they are. Never had to cover them up in the winter, they barely need watering, and so far not a single pest or animal issue. I had ordered a northern european variety to match my cold climate, expensive like you said, but I look forward to saving a few bulbs for next year. 3-4 bulbs goes a long ways in planting.

good video. i started with 2 lbs of garlic from w. va. 27 years ago and continue to replant the biggest bulbs[cloves] the last of oct every year with no problems. i rotate the crop row yearly and prepare the row ahead of time and cover with plastic until planting time. here in the smokey mountains of east tn the ground can get to wet to plant in by late oct. we love to eat it and share with friends. i have tried some soft necks but the hard neck is the way to go for us. i love music but have found it does not store as well as other varieties. thanks and continue on.

Patrick, that was a great video and very thorough. Garlic is one of my easiest and best crops (both hard and soft neck). It's never failed me and we always have plenty on hand. One of the suppliers I used when I first started said that it's best to grow future garlic from your previous crop. Apparently garlic will adapt to it's environment and become more productive over time. Thanks for the very detailed explanation. I hope more people will grow their own. It's really is easy.
