Very impressed with the efforts of this organisation, and l personally thank you for doing this incredibly important work. As regards what is collected its impossible not to shudder at the vast amount of fishing debris ie ropes and netting. Clearly the fishing industry is not playing by their rules.

Every update gives me one more sliver of hope... If also the river systems could be multiplied in order to effectively address the 100 rivers at the root of the problem, the vision of plastic free oceans within my lifetime could turn from a mere dream into a tangible reality.

I love these updates, explaining what they are doing, Nations around the world should be backing said project/organizations as they are apart of the problem and if we could have many of these ships pulling this stuff out, recycling it and putting that raw material back into economies that is a win win.... keep up the great work!

It is so wonderful that you all are taking every precaution possible to not disturb marine life and also wonderful that Dolphins are riding in front of your ships and Whales are monitoring as well! Unfortunate another crew I think it was last spring or maybe earlier actually made a video proclaiming that the great pacific garbage patch was so small it didn't really exist anymore! So please try to make sure that all crew members on every operation are all very aware of what has been done in the past. Thank you all.

You might benefit from doing the plastic sorting at a table so you don't need to bend over as much. Also if you don't fill the sorting bins as full and take more trips it actually requires less energy and takes about the same time.

I wonder if you could setup reflective balls on each end of the ship and have a visual system on each ship watching each other.. Have it setup so each ship could do the maths of how far apart you guys are, which orientation relative to each other.. And basically have them monitor each other..
@el_micha
@el_micha 6 ай бұрын
Don't you think they use GPS coordinates and radar systems for monitoring their positions? They're applying computational models and other technology that is far from a DIY-approach. There are scientists and engineers working on this since 10 years. Even if the system looks a bit simple on first glance…
@ColinRichardson
@ColinRichardson 6 ай бұрын
@@el_micha can you get orientation accurately like that? And also need constant network connection between the two. A bunch of reflective balls just make two passive systems that only need communication when massive divinations start to happen.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:33 🌊 *The Ocean Cleanup's System 03 operates in the North Pacific, specifically targeting the Great Pacific Garbage Patch for plastic cleanup.* 01:00 🗺️ *Hotspot areas with high plastic concentration are identified through computational modeling, ensuring efficient plastic collection.* 01:28 ♻️ *Manual labor is involved in separating and extracting plastic, with a recent extraction removing almost 12 tons of ocean plastic.* 02:10 🦩 *The success of the cleanup is measured by the amount of plastic removed per hour, with a focus on minimizing wildlife capture.* 02:40 🚨 *Precautions to protect marine life include acoustic signals, LED lights, and escape holes in the retention zone, monitored 24/7 by cameras and drones.* 03:47 🐬 *Continuous monitoring and precautions are taken to avoid negative interactions with marine life, such as dolphins and whales.* 04:41 🤝 *Efficient communication between separate vessels is crucial during environmental events to ensure the success of cleanup operations.* 05:20 🌍 *Lessons learned from on-site operations aim to improve environmental management and assessments, applying insights to enhance future cleanup efforts.*

@ktinxx 6 ай бұрын
@TEN-v8mp I doubt that incinerating the plastic and thereby releasing the carbon contained in it into the atmosphere is the environmentally smart way to go... As far as I understand it, the organisation aims to recycle all the plastic collected. That's why they are painstakingly sorting it into categories. If they wanted to burn it, that would not be necessary.
@TEN-ve8mp
@TEN-ve8mp 6 ай бұрын
@@ktinxx I knew I would get this reply. But sorting the plastic, shuttling it here and there and then the energy required to melt it into new products has to have a much bigger energy requirement than burning on site. Big picture.
@ktinxx
