I can see similar similarities with my own experience in what you mentioned about being in and out about the way you feel. I have this "fear" of being disappointed and I also haven't been in a relationship nor a date. I know if I allow those "feelings" to sprout then I am opening the doors to possible disappointment. Past experiences take a hold on our minds and if I see someone that seems familiar of my past bad experience then the "danger" alarm comes in my mind and I want to flee. That wall has to be broken down with time, trusting the other individual, and feeling safe. That's why I'm referring to your hot and cold with him in the beginning could possibly be from the fear of disappointment and not wanting things to go south after you've given your time to that individual.
