About Us: We are a family of four from Southern California, (San Clemente) about to set sail in April of 2020. Join us as we document our travel experiences, adventures and uncertainties that come along.
3 years ago we sat down as a family and shared a dream that we all wanted to see come true. A dream that we take a window of time in our lives to do something truly special together, an extended sailing trip, an adventure that would stay with us for the rest of our lives.

Absolutely loved these past two videos. Your willingness to share outfitting options and pricing combined with your knowledge/training/experience (thus far) provide an honest (retail) perspective of boat ownership. Your skills in videography and editing are a bonus for all of us. So impressed and thankful for your productions. Love the appreciation for Annapolis (Go Navy) and showcasing inspirational examples to inspire others. I am a huge fan of yours and look forward to many more exciting and informative productions. Level vibes to all.

Loved the Academy Tour Andy and Maki! Go Navy Beat Army!!! My Father went there, class of 58', he is a retired Captain. My two Grandfathers were both Colonels in the Army, so I and my sister and brothers were Navy Brats (that's actually a funny term, a mix of Navy and Army). I was unable to follow in their footsteps due to a medical condition. My Father is still very active with the Academy, helps out some of the midshipmen through the Alumni association. Dad was a Helicopter Pilot (trained in Pensacola and Key West Florida), was in Vietnam and did many of the Appolo Rocket recovery missions as well, and was involved in the Cuban Missle crisis. Great respect for our military and for this young man Ale who is making his dreams come true in service of this great country! I hope you all get a chance to connect later on your sailing adventures.

Wow Michael! We owe your family a big "Thank You" for all their service. It's the brave men and woman of our Armed Services that keep us free and allows families like ours to be able to sail and live our dreams so please, pass on our deepest and most heartfelt "Thank you" to your family 😊. We have been blessed to have met Ale, an amazing young man and that he took of his free time to show us around truly a breathtaking campus at the U.S.Navel Academy. To hear the trumpet and national anthem play each morning, echoing across Annapolis Harbor has been simply majestic and has given us all, especially our boys a few moments of reflection and appreciation for this great nation each morning. We will be staying in touch with Ale and whole heartedly plan to have him aboard SV OliLuki for a sailing passage at some point. Thank you so much for your comments, for your amazing family and their service and for spending a part of your day with us on this sailing adventure. We look forward to sharing more as we continue the journey. All the best to you and your family.....stay safe. ~Andy, Maki, Oliver and Lukas.......SV OliLuki

2 more panels sideways and tilted slightly forward will compensate for that shading. Making one that allows you to change the tilt though...would be amazing. You should consider it. Free power without noise is even better. Not that having the emergency generator is nice too, ha ha. Love your boat though.

Thank you for your comment and suggestion. We have looked at other solar options however the panels we have in place now fully charge our battery bank nearly every day before noon. It is fantastic to have 100% free power with no noise at all! We love it!

Always turn propane off at the TANK first, then the grill. It's not required, but it's a good safety precaution as the lit grill will give you a visual indicator your tanks are still on. Also, was there no vent in the compartment? You should have an exterior vent at the bottom (but not leading into the hull!!!) to prevent accumulation.
@sailingsvoliluki6938

Great tip on turning off the gas at the tank first.....thank you. There is an exterior vent in that compartment which does NOT lead into the hull 👍

Another great informative video. The yes or no to factory option must be so hard as price can add fast. It might be interesting to know what options you did not choose to fit and why. Surprised how quiet Annapolis harbor, late August, was even for mid week! Hope it got more fun in ego ally on weekend with the usual safety distancing. Love the opening sequence , drone footage gives such a different perspective! Cheers Warren

Can you educate us as to choosing between a Northern Lights GenSet vs Cummins Onan?
@sailingsvoliluki6938
@sailingsvoliluki6938 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t think we have enough knowledge on this to guide you, and keep in mind we have the Northern Lights generator because that’s the only option we have from Leopard. That said I can honestly say that we love our generator. It’s quiet, it’s a workhorse and it seems to be very light on maintenance. It sips fuel too! Cummins Onan is a big name/ big company. I have seen their generators on some massive yachts as well as other catamarans. If I’m not mistaken, Fountaine Pajot cats use Cummins Onan generators. Perhaps an FP owner can share their perspective on their generator. ?? I hope this helps a little 😊

I am loving the videos and just finished getting current. One comment from someone who is not an owner yet, but who has had a boat for a good many years and does a lot of his own work. With that disclaimer I'll ask- No grommet on the wire for the light just catamarans added at the transom? That wire passing through fiberglass would rub a little at a time, right? I'd seal it with something at a minimum to keep it from moving and to keep moisture out, but perhaps I am not seeing it correctly or they took some other protective action there.

Hi Thomas, wow good eyes :-). There is a rubber grommet on the inside but I may squeeze a little marine caulking to seal up the outer area. Thanks and thank you for joining our sailing adventure!

Great information! I am looking at 2500-3000kw solar and doing lithium. I'm wondering if I would need the genset. Your thoughts? Cant wait for part 3. I am assuming the water maker will be covered correct... Thank you for doing these, they defiantly help those of us that are a couple years out from doing this exact same thing get a better handle on all the after market set up expenses. Sorry, one last question... internet options...?
@sailingsvoliluki6938
@sailingsvoliluki6938 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert! Wow that's a ton of solar! Paired with lithium I'm not sure if you'd need a generator but you'll want to check in with the great team at Just Catamarans! That said, my guess is that you'll still need a generator if you plan to have multiple A/C units on your boat and run them simultaneously. With the amount of solar and lithium you're talking about, you could probably run one A/C unit perhaps all night (?) but high consuming electronics put a heavy load on the batteries. That plus the wonderful tech advancements that keep coming out on boats, power is always going to be the number one issue. You may want to take a look at one of the last videos from Sailing SV Happy Together on KZbin on how they set up their Leopard 50 Catamaran. Randy put a ton of solar and inverters on that boat to be able to run just about anything they want. Regarding internet. @@sailingsvoliluki6938 It seems like $31k could buy a lot of solar.and lithium. I know lithium is about $1000/kWh installed but with panels, controllers, etc do you have any guess what the cost per kWh total is for everything? You'd probably need near 12kWh of battery and the solar to back it up to drop the genset I figure?

I saw on your Viking liferaft you had black webbing handles. Did the crew at Just Cats add those for you? I saw something similar on a boat last winter in the Caribbean and sent a photo to Landfall Navigation (where we bought our Viking), but neither they nor their Viking distributor had seen anything like it.

You sure have added a lot to your boat. I would think that a lot of this would be standard, or a "reasonable" option on this boat. I am not great at keeping up with the cost, but, you have spent, at least 100K, or more on "add ons". I agree to all of them, by the way.

Hi Jack.....yes we've added a lot but our boat to be honest was one of the least worked on at Just Catamarans. To see a catamaran having $150-200K added is pretty common, especially when it's being outfitted for offshore sailing. We see the options as Safety first, then Comfort, then Fluff. Although our new Leopard 45 is not cheap, we are not made of endless money and we take great care as to what we have installed on our boat. It all adds up very very quickly. Anyway, thank you for joining our adventure....hope you continue to enjoy the videos! Stay tuned...there's more to come!

What exactly is that rub rail protecting ? I don’t understand, is it to stop lines rubbing against the fiberglass? Its up so high the dock lower than the rub rail.
@sailingsvoliluki6938
@sailingsvoliluki6938 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark! You’re right, the rub rail is up high on the “freeboard” (the side of the boat) however it is in the correct place. Rub rails on all boat are set at the widest actual point of the outer hull(s) and are there primarily to protect the fiberglass when docking in a boat slip or fuel dock as an example. The rub rail will be the very first part of the side of the boat to “rub” against the dock pylons. They’re not cheap to have installed but it’s far less expensive than having to have fiberglass repairs done. Additionally if the rub rail were ever do become dented, the damaged section can simply be replaced. Hope that helps with your question. Thanks for joining the journey! A new video is on its way! All the best!

Thankfully the chances of capsizing are extremely minimal, however that said, the raft will deploy by simply releasing the black strap. Yes it would be underwater to do that but far, far easier than where it was from the factory, stuffed inside the large lazarette at the aft cockpit.

Thanks, glad you're enjoying the videos 👍. Regarding the generator.....as we made our option selections, we had many, many conversations about which was the better path for each individual option......get it from the factory or aftermarket. The generator option and associated costs is much more than just the cost of the generator itself. Given the hefty price tag we looked into this option thoroughly and in the end it was better to purchase it through the factory. Thanks for joining our adventure! ~Andy

A question please: Might you have been able to squeeze in a 5th solar panel, or would that have resulted in too much of an overhang on each side? Thank you.
@sailingsvoliluki6938

We would have loved to squeeze a 5th panel in but it would have created too much of an overhang. That said, as panel output continues to rise, at some point we may change the panels from the 460W we have now to perhaps something new since the latest panels are now cresting over 500W!

In several earlier episodes, you went into detail regarding what options you had factory-fitted, and those you had done as after-market (mainly from Just Cats). Hi Andrew, the total cost all in was roughly $800k. It's very easy to spend far more than that when you start adding on aftermarket items which is why we have put together these rather detailed exterior and coming next interior videos. Not to say our way is the best or the only way but to share what we did, how we did it and why? The biggest cost factor in what you add aftermarket is based on how you plan to use your boat.....where you plan to sail her. The most expensive version of pretty much any boat will be a "blue water" or offshore rigged boat because the systems you will need such as water maker and solar can get pricey but are necessary. Anyway, hope you like the videos.....more to come :-). All the best and stay safe! ~Andy

I really enjoy your videos and you're rapidly developing your story telling style. One constructive criticism is to edit more tightly. Your video is on the long side at 35 minutes, so while amusing, I'd crop the bloopers out. The solar panel sequencing took up a couple of minutes for example. And I had to laugh at your tool storage. I guarentee that in a couple of years time you'll neeed a LOT more space! I have always found on boats as opposed to houses, that everything needs a specialist tool or complex tool extensions to reach those hard to reach places.

@sailingsvoliluki6938
@sailingsvoliluki6938 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Marvin! Purchase price is definitely a big reason but that's just the beginning. The Leopard 50 is gorgeous but it's a really big boat. Along with that size comes higher expenses for all maintenance and even docking. It adds up fast! That said, the Leopard 45 is the "sweet spot" a boat big enough to be comfortable but small enough to be manageable not just from operating but also maintaining. The design of the Leopard 45 is nearly the same interior space as the Leopard 48 and to be honest for a family of 4 we just don't need a bigger boat. With all of us utilizing cabin space, we still have a completely empty cabin and head for guests + the salon table converts to a king size bed too! Anyway thanks for your question and thank you for joining the adventure! Stay safe :-).

Are your solar panels enough or you would add more solar panels in the future?
@sailingsvoliluki6938
@sailingsvoliluki6938 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph! I don't think we would add any more solar. At almost 1500W, the panels top off our batteries in just a few hours. If it's a cloudy day it will take most of the day but we've never had an issue of running low on power during the day. There are times that we run the generator for 1-2 hours to make dinner and top of the batteries before heading off to sleep but that's about it. ~Andy

They also have a much bigger boat and more demand for electricity. You can never have too much solar onboard but the only option we’d have is to add the 100w walk-on panels which lose a lot of productivity because they sit in the shadows of sails, boom, mast and running rigging. Technology of course moves fast so if a better option was available, we might consider it. 👍

Thank you for your videos I enjoy them a lot. Obviously your choice your money but it seems that some of these factory fitted options do take the piss. Now of course you do expect Leopard to make a profit nothing wrong with that they are a company which looks lik produce a great product. However Just for curiosity's sake I did a quick check on prices for the first two pieces of equipment your generator was $16k not the $31k and your liferaft $3k obviously these are not fitted prices but if this is the trend with all your factory fitted options you could of saved yourself tens of thousands by having these fitted aftermarket. Now I am all for convenience and maybe the money does not matter to you and it is your money but apart from convenience I wondered why you went this route? I am betting you are a smart bloke and did the same maths as I
@sailingsvoliluki6938
@sailingsvoliluki6938 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Glenn, thank you for your comments....really appreciate them. So the cost of the generator when choosing that option from the factory is not just the generator itself but all that the installation entails to run cooling systems through the boat, additional water pumps and connectivity to all the systems the generator will power. It is a pretty detailed job. Also I believe the $16k is the wholesale price of the generator but I may be wrong. We weighed several thoughts when optioning items from the factory. Cost is always a big one, perhaps the first one to take into consideration however the other is to research could we do this aftermarket and if yes, what would the cost, inconvenience of opening walls, floors, ceiling and labor come to not just in cost but time. Keep in mind once you take delivery of your boat, every day it sits in a marina you are racking up dock fees and here in the States especially in Fort Lauderdale is going to be roughly $120 per day. In the end the generator was far better to option from the factory than aftermarket. Regarding the life raft.....this is not an option. For any new boat to be imported into the United States there is a mandatory USCG Package that MUST be on the boat......the life raft being one of them but then there are flairs, life vests, etc, etc. Anyway as we mentioned on the video there is a lot of thought to put into what options to get and where to get them from (ie factory or aftermarket). Thanks again for joining our adventure.....hope you continue to enjoy the videos. Best, ~Andy
