How we Painted our Oak Mantel/Channel Updates

Hi Amy! I'm a new subscriber as of today. Just watched your "Fireplace Painting Project" video, and now I think I'm ready to tackle our Oak Mantle surround. I've been thinking about it for some time, and I'd like to update the fireplace by painting it Black. I've seen some black ones and love the look. I have mostly black furniture, with black and white curtains. (Farmhouse decor) So I'm sure it will look great. I was afraid to approach my husband with this idea, as he doesn't think things need to be changed. ..Oh! But it does 😊!! So thank you for your content on this, and I'll be off to Sherwin Williams tomorrow for the correct type of paint, etc. Can't wait to do this project. Fun times ahead!!

Well it's been 1 months since I replied to post...good news! I painted my fireplace today..Iron Gate Black. It looks amazing! I've been contemplating for 12 years, to get up the nerve to paint it. My husband gave me "his blessing" (that means I was on my own😊). So I ordered paint on Amazon, rec'd it yesterday, and painted today. 2 coats and it looks so good. So happy with it! It was just a natural oak, and needed an update. ..Now, to get rid of that green marble...eeww!next project! I will decorate it tomorrow for the holidays. ( but will admire it all night 🤩👍)

thanks Amy We have had an electric fireplace for wow over 10 years at least. Last year the insert went out and I thought I was going to have to trash the whole thing. But I was able to find a new insert from Wayfair for under $500. It fits almost perfect. However, it doesnt match some of my of new furniture I recently purchased. So I found your video and I am going to do it. I am going to use the same color as well. thanks for the motivation.

@@SimplyRHome Hello Amy well it is almost finished and I love it. However, the Nahavo White Paint seems to have a tint of yellow to it. But my family says it matches the other stuff great! Thanks for the video. I cant wait to decorate it for the Fall.

Did you not feel the need to use a wood grain filler before painting? Oak is tough to paint! I learned this in my kitchen. Secondly, what gloss paint finish did you use? For my cabinets, I put a coat of polyurathane finish on it to help protect it and make it more washable when necessary. JUst wanted to get your thoughts on this!

Hi Daniel. No we did not. The SW paint Enamel for doors and trim really hides the wood grain nicely. We only used polyurethane later for the top to help protect it. Our Kitchen cabinets don't have polyurethane on them either. We do touch up any areas that need it, but they've been painted for 8 years. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching. God bless.

Your mantel is pretty. I do have to say that I like the Oak Trim you have. I have an older home and have Gummed Wood trim and took an easy 30+ shades of paint off of it. I've taken it to original and polurethaned it and will never put another coat of paint on it. I have Oak cabinets in my kitchen that was stained a horrible color. Its down to what it was originally. I guess its what you prefer and like. I suppose that Oak dates the home and bringing it into today. I just like the original better.

Very nice job! I am so glad I ran across this video! I'm painting my fireplace also! I just used 123 primer and regular paint! I was going to use some polyurethane top coat until I see you did not. Thank for sharing this video!

Thanks so much!! I’m so glad it was helpful!! I do think polyurethane is a good idea for high traffic areas. I have a burgundy wooden fireplace, similar like your fireplace but in dark color. Can I paint it to white using the same paint like yours ?

Yes, I believe it would work. You may need more coats of paint to cover a dark color tho?!

You have mentioned your paint color in other videos and I have always liked Navaho White. It has been around a long time e as a staple white color. Back in the late 70s it was my wall color in a house we had built. My ex husband was a builder and the Navaho White was used in a lot of homes. I even considered it when I recently painted my kitchen/dining/living room. I ended up using Sherwin Williams Rivers Edge. It’s a nice warm but not too yellow white. I had so many white and neutral color chips. It’s so hard to chose because you have to live with the choice for a long time. Only once in my life did I actually change a color mid-painting. What was supposed to e an apricot was pumpkin orange! I covered it with a creamy white. 😂. I love your white trimmed home.

Looking on SW website at Navajo White, it looks tan on their website. Your mantel looks more towards a white color. Looks like two completely different colors. Am I missing something?
