I have viewed many videos on hibiscus cutting propagation and this one by far is the best! Thanks for doing all the hard work for me. Now I can make an informed decision on what is the best method to propagate hibiscus. Great job! Take care.

Great video! Thank you!! Never thought to use rubber dirt. That looks to be the most convenient way to check root growth!

Since you mentioned rubber dirt plugs too - what is the brand or where do you get yours. Rubber won’t absorb water as it is inert. I’m wondering if they are made from compressed coco and a peat which would give you a very spongy grow cube or plug. Thks.

thank you soo much for sharing, I've been growing cuttings just by sticking them in small pots with potting soil & some just in cups with 1" of water they all have different outcomes,but I'll definitely Ste up my game & start this way. thank you soo much!!

Thanks for sharing! It was especially interesting to see the various results. Most videos just show "how to" but not usually the proof that it worked.

This video helped me so much! I ordered some cuttings off eBay and I decided to follow your lead by using dirt plugs, the hormone powder you used Hormex 8) and I created a mini greenhouse. After 2wks all 6 cuttings are showing new growth and one cutting has roots growing through the dirt plug. I assume the others have roots since they have new growth, but the roots aren’t busting through the dirt plug yet. Two of my cuttings (3wks old) haven’t shown new growth yet, but the small leaves have grown quite a bit so my fingers are still crossed those two survive.

What is the "Rubber Dirt" that is mentioned in the video for planting media? I can't find any references to that using Google. Looks like good stuff to use so am interested in it.

Thanks for all the information. Can you please explain what rubber dirt is? I have been growing a long time but have no idea what this is and can’t find it on the internet either. I do know of root riot plugs, and similar grow plugs - but those are all made from organic biodegradable materials such as varying blends of compressed coco and peat - some with nutrients. Thanks bunches.

@plips71755

I think he is talking about grow plugs like Root Riot but they aren’t rubber. They are coco/peat blend compressed to give you a spongy cube/plug. Rubber won’t absorb water. It looks like a couple of folks have asked but no answers - maybe the club he mentioned or the Hibiscus Society might knkw what he is speaking of because he is definitely saying rubber dirt. It can’t be rubber mulch because that is a compressed cube and again that mulch is used because it doesn’t absorb water, get muddy and it cushions little bottoms on playgrounds. If you have figured out what he is talking about, please advise. Thks.

Well after thinking more - I decided to check the Hormex site to see if they offered a rooting plug similar to the Root Riot ones and they do. So maybe he is using the Hormex rooting plugs since he ordered their hormone. But if so, they aren’t rubber - exactly what I said they were. Sure hope he answers so we know for sure since several folks have asked. Hope this helps some others. From Hormex website...hormex.com/pages/snip-n-dip-rooting-cubes Hormex Rooting Cubes are made with the perfect blend of organic coco, peat moss & worm castings for the highest cloning and seeding success.
