Did you know you can eat it like rubarb when it's young? Pretty tasty! I've had it all over my city backyard. It thrives in places with compacted ground or where there is a lot of pavement etc aka a city :p (it's native habitat is volcano rock) so maybe when you improve the soil and take away stones and keep eating it, other plants will take over. Good luck!

Lovely. But I would not eat anything from that front garden, honestly. The road is too close, everything is covered with toxic exhaust waste and dust that was chrurned up by the cars. I would plant everything edible in the back or build a greenhouse for the front to protect them as much as possibly can from the pollution.
@wemuk5170
@wemuk5170 Жыл бұрын
My hubby said the same. But Spicy Moustache isn’t allowed a greenhouse in his front garden in London. The council will never let him build one in front, as that would be contrary to their planning permission rules. Edit: Guy Barter of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS chief horticulturist) was once asked by London’s Evening Standard, what science says about the safety of urban gardening. He replied that there is no problem with growing near roads or railways, provided the soil itself isn’t contaminated, such as in places that used to do metal works or gasworks. If the soil might be contaminated, then he advised, growing in raised beds or bags.
@itsmypukapuka4710
@itsmypukapuka4710 Жыл бұрын
@@wemuk5170 Petrol/gas contains lead and other nasties. This itself should be more than enough not garden so near the road. (Anyone with 2 healthy braincells would avoid planting stuff so close to the road.) And then there is the road itself, which is made of pitch, asphalt or tarmac, and majority of city-installed asphalt has toxic levels of petroleum and other oils that are pulled up through plants. So these are circulating in the air all day, every day, to finally settle on the top of the soil, which you have your edibles in. So you are going to water them, and wash all the stuff down into the soil. You can have all the raised beds you want, if the this is what happens anyway. It's logic. In the light of that, don't care what Guy Bartel or whoever says to be honest. Even the London's water is contaminated with lead in most places, because the water carries pipes haven't been changed since they were laid in the ground. I would not plant in the front, nothing edible, not even herbs. Especially not herbs, that you will season your food with, of drink it as a tisane or tincture. That's all I am saying.

how much time on average you have to dedicate to your garden in order to produce a sufficient amount of food?
@SpicyMoustache
@SpicyMoustache Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the size of your garden, season, what is "sufficient" for you, etc. but for my garden, I would say not much during the winter except for a few times a week checks and almost every day after or before work in full growing season. It is such a nice feeling spending time there that I can't wait to finish work to start watering and checking it =)
