Danny, you are so dead on about genetics. My first husband was killed when our daughter was 2 1/2 years old, she has no real memories of her own, but at the age of 40 she is so much like her daddy in so many ways. Some things are just born into a person. I'm watching a day late, but I so enjoy Porch Time and look forward to it every week. Blessing to you and Ms Wanda at Deep South Homestead!!

This video rings very true TODAY. People with NO DIRECTION are having a hard time during this viral crisis. The ones that are trying to do something positive with idle hands are fairing much better than others that just have NO CLUE what to do. I appreciate what you have said about encouraging the arts. My kids are very creative and it's been GOOD for them.

My son is 5. I often have people walk up to me and ask why he's so well behaved. When it's time for dinner or bed he cleans up what he's doing and washes up. I just always took him to church and constantly preached hard work and taking care of what you own.

Words of wisdom, Danny. I taught my 2 kids that very thing. I sheltered them from a bad mother. By court order I was forced to allow them to go visit their mother for Christmas break. They left my home happy; they returned angry and upset. Just the 2 weeks of a bad influence has affected them and their lives to such a degree that I am still reaping the bad influences. I have tried to correct the damage, but, it seems a human being is willing to believe the bad and evil that they hear instead of finding out for themselves the answers they had asked. I've been told that they will come back to me in time. My son has but my daughter has not. It has been 15 plus years and I don't see any changes in my daughter's attitude towards me. She has a family of her own. I pray that they will treat her better than she has done me. I see parallels in her life and in my own that I hope that one day she too will come to see and understand. I guess my point is this, all it takes is just a whisper from the devil to plant doubt in your heart to keep you out of heaven. All it takes is two weeks of evil to cause a child to keep resentment in their hearts for a very long time, maybe for their entire lives.

So much truth!!! We are primarily raising our grand daughter and electronics are off limits for 23.75 hours of the day and being outside is a requirement. In fact she helped plant some fall items yesterday. Guess what.....DIRT DIDN'T HURT HER!!! She is respectful at 4 years old she knows pkease and thank you. She knows yes ma'am and no ma'am. She LOVES to help and she knows her boundaries. It doesn't mean she doesn't try them but she knows them and also knows what a spanking is. We try our hardest to raise her in the right direction but completely in the love and admonition of the Lord. She walks around 90% of the time singing songs to God. We are trying to be the best example for her and train her for a successful life WITH discipline. Great porch time Danny!! You speak to the issues that so many are scared to talk about. Keep up the great talks!!!

I grew up hard. It taught me to be self-sufficient and responsible. Today, many parents talk about hating to keep their kids during the summer. They always add how they love their children after ranting about it. Makes no sense to me. Children are a lifetime responsibility. They are not a toy or are they disposable.

I agree completely. I used to homeschool mine and it was just bizarre to me that other parents would say they could NEVER homeschool their kids because they couldn't handle being around them that much. Huh?

We started in the private school system, tried the public school system, and ended up Home Schooling our girls. When we took them completely out of the school system, their behavior changed. Their behavior changed for the better. We went on a trip and stopped to eat at a restaurant. It was a buffet type, the girls and I returned to our table first. Their daddy took a little longer. When he returned, we said Thanks, and began to eat. We had an older couple come up to our table and tell us, they thought etiquette (table manners) and Giving Thanks to our Lord were a thing of the past for our generation. It is really sad how we as a people have become.

I started with homeschooling and by 4th grade the girls (twins) were begging to go to public school. I set them to the neighborhood school and it was a very negative thing from my perspective--both in what they were exposed to, how much they were challenged to learn (or not!). They became flaming social liberals despite my best efforts.

Growing up in a very abusive home gave me the desire to be able to do anything I wanted to do. I had no fear of trying new things and then finding something new to do when that got old, but the search for truth took me the furthest. I was easy on my kids because of my abusive up bringing, to easy, but the thought of ever getting out of control and beating my kids and breaking their bones like mine were broken just scared the hell out of me.
@countryfrau8328

Same kind of thing with my dad. He was beaten as a kid and the most he ever did to us was hit our butts through the bed covers with a rolled up newspaper when we were supposed to be sleeping but were carrying on and blabbing and playing at night. I really respect him for that. We'd stop after he did that for that night.

My abuse wasn't physical, it was verbal. I grew up with a sociopath for a mother that loved hurting people's feelings, so I grew up never talking to her, and thinking I was an idiot and not worthy of anything. Got married jumping from the frypan to the fire and married a hitter with a big ego and bad temper. My kids are horrible. I didn't raise them, HE did. If I "intruded" I got it too, so didn't talk much to him either. Took me 10 years to get up the nerve to divorce him, and he got the kids. They never come to visit me. I'm a loner and an introvert. I do everything myself, and find it really hard to ask when I DO need help. But I LOVE helping others. Got a job with the phone company and loved solving phone problems businesses had. Got lots of tool and jacket rewards for money I made for the company. Retired, and now love helping people with my retirement check, buying groceries, paying electric bills, hiring them when they are down on their luck. I believe in God, and Jesus as my savior. After all these years, maybe THIS was his plan for me all along, I love sharing the Gospel to the lost, and have the boldness to go into places no one else would go to share.

I agree with every bit of what you said. We had one black and white tv when I was young. It stayed off most of the time. My mom called it the one eyed monster. Today it's the babysitter and oh my at what that babysitter teaches our kids. People laugh at me because my parents wouldn't let us watch starsky and hutch. People laugh at my kids because I wouldn't let them watch Harry Potter. But I know you can't unsee what you see and you can't unhear what you hear. I'm thankful my parents cared enough to put a belt to my butt. The morals of some people today show just how right my parents were. I followed suit with my kids. But now the government wants to step in and tell us how to raise our kids and they aren't doing such a good job. One look at the youth in Chicago says it all.

I think the problem I see today, and from when I talk to social workers or teachers within the public school system... is that, no one is raising children. Both parents are working full time. In fact, I talked to one father to be, who felt it was the school's responsibility to teach his child morals. I explained that I didn't believe that; the responsibility should fall on the parents not the school. His response,"How am I going to raise my child if we both work all the time?" To which I said,"Why are people having kids if they don't want to raise them?" Having kids today is like obtaining a house or a car. Its an accessory to life. Its not considered the most important job or task you could ever take on. A child is a thing you get as a consequence of unprotected sex. The concept of family is not sacred work, it is just a result of animals fulfilling biological desires. The concept of family is broken... so why wouldn't we have broken children as a result? Why on God's green earth do people want the public school system to raise their child? People are not thinking. They are acting on impulse. In this day and age people do not get the excuse of ignorance. We live in an advanced age that if you wanted to research all the ways to be a parent or raise a child, you could. But people don't want to take it that seriously. So folks throw up their hands and say,"Well I made mistakes! There is no manual for raising children." and it is a load of b.s. On the topic of discipline- I agree parents are not setting boundaries or providing healthy discipline to their children. But that stems from, again, parents being fools. People think they are special because they can have unprotected sex. That a child is a miracle because of this act. To me, the miracle has always been whether you can raise a productive, intelligent, member of society. It doesn't take anyone special to reproduce, just watch the Jerry Springer show and much becomes clear. If we want better tomorrows for the next generation we need to start having different conversations with our kids and our grandkids. We live in strange times and the tools used for the 1800's, the 1950's, etc. are not as compatible for the challenges and threats of today. Much can be garnered from past experience and what history has taught us... but the landscape-political, social, cultural, and otherwise needs to be navigated with fresh words and fresh insight.

AM MJ : Over my many years I have heard people say things that really stick out. Regarding your point, here are the most sad: I visited home of a family the day their child started kindergarten. This ‘mother’ was chatting it up with her friend and said, with glee something I will never forget. “Well, he started school, my job is done now!” I was so disgusted, disappointed and sickened and yet realized, this is ‘America’ today. This is the way a vast majority of people ‘think’. I heard another man in a store commenting how the TV is how he teaches his kids about sexuality. Sitting them in front of a show because he doesn’t want to talk about it. Again - so much of societal ‘thinking’ today. Finally, I had a mother comment to me regarding other mothers that work hard to get a lot done and discipline their children: “I see those 'Super Moms' and I don’t think, ‘Wow, I wanna be like her,’ I think , ‘Wow, what can I get her to do for me?!’” Out of their own mouths these words of ‘today’s parents’ have bothered me, disgusted me and proved we have not a problem with ‘Global Warming’ but a problem of ‘Global Sinning’ in a world of unrepentant hearts! As well: Out of the abundance of the heart, so the mouth speaketh...

It's going to be in the 90's all week where I live in WV. I don't have a/c, just a ceiling fan. Keep curtains closed and it stays cool. I had parents as a child. Their way or punishment. Even a month in the yard for being 5 min late. Kids thought my Mom was very strange and too strict. I was an only child that worked in the very large garden till I couldn't see my hands, it was dark. No play on sat. Mom's canning inside and I was on the porch cleaning the veg and breaking into pieces until it was all done. You're right, Danny

I was trained or just am this way, that if you have something to get done, do it the very best you can do it. I was also trained with 10 yrs in the far far north Adirondacks to live without power at all for a year and no running water for the full ten yrs. I learned to get things done a different way. I was taught to be honest, be helpful, and don't put up with someone trying to cheat you. Always remember there is someone who has it worse than you and there but for the Grace of God go YOU. I see some parents when their kids throw a tantrum, just give them what they want so they 'shut up'. Well guess what, you are training that kid to have temper tantrums. They threw a fit and they got what they wanted. Guess what? They will do the same thing again, cause it worked. Learning technology is fine, kids are in this new world, I get it. BUT... it should not be the be all and end all of their whole day , every day, all the time. NOT good.

My place is about 3 miles from the Lake Limestone dam in central Texas...I was outside at 4am watering what’s left of my garden... got done and come inside and I’m ringing wet... isn’t it supposed to be the coolest right before sunrise... that is terrible ... I’m just wondering if we are gonna have any fall this year., or if we are gonna go straight from HOT to COLD...we are in the middle of a drought here... No hay for the animals and if you find some it is close to $100/round bale or more ....I have enough to make it til Nov 1... I am trusting that The Good Lord will provide the funds and make available feed and hay for me to be able to provide for the animals that he has entrusted to me...

For the past 9 years I've been raising two step sons. I try to teach them how to work for what they have. Like chopping firewood for heat, and pack a bucket of water for a bath. We have running water now, but for over a year we didn't. I now have the ground ready for a nice sized garden. All we need now is seeds and plants. Summers are long around here and there's a lot to be done. No time or money for trips to Disney Land, or even Kentucky Kingdom witch is only an hour away. We have no computer or video games. It's just work, and try to servive. A great depression could happen, and I don't think we'd even notice.

well said Danny. Let me just say something about raising up one's children. When I was a little girl I can remember being on the wrong end of a punishment AND having NO idea what it was that I did wrong. I still don't know and I'm a gramma. I look back on some situations that I didn't understand then, and wished that my parents had prepared me better for them. My dad worked a lot, my mother should never have been a parent. She was just mean. And could go from 0 to 60 in a split second and I had no idea why. it varied with the day. all that being said as today's parents go into rearing their children please plan out strategies for how to raise up your kids, think ahead to lots of different situations and how best to explain them and work throught them. It really helped me raise up my children, each one of them Godly amazing people, and helped me in counseling my grandchildren in their lives. I have a few sayings my kids and grandkids remember - never half do anything - ever!! and life isn't fair. Because it isn't. You don't get a prize for everything, it has to be earned I still don't know about my childhood but I do know I purposed to do much better with my own. thanks for putting this out here

We have some things in common Danny :) I want to remind you that it's not too late to sit down, sketch & enjoy the process, it's not too late to learn how to pick a guitar & sing so those dang dogs next door get drown out o.- (ps: my neighbors dogs don't bark but the kids are learning how to pick a guitar on an electric...good thing I have plaster walls and run the AC) o.- I was an artist most of my life & I remember distinctly two twin ladies who were 70 years old in my drawing studio class in college...they told me that some of the greatest artists didn't start being well known til they were older o.- I too have laid my art talent aside to homestead, but I will return back to it I think...it feeds the soul. :) Get you an old guitar and teach yourself to pluck it...enjoy the process and start singing again...it'll make those evenings at Deep South a little more relaxed after a hard day in the heat.

I am glad i grew up hard. Because life gives you no mercy. The difficult times i had prepared me for life's struggles. Made it so when things went wrong, it was no big deal when i was older. I see people with easy lives who think they have it hard. I remember when i was a kid, I watched a movie that taught me something Was a little boy running up to people and demanding money. The little boy was beautiful. He thought he was owed everything because he was beautiful. So he ran up too the two men and demanded money. One of the guys punched the boy in the face and broke his nose. The other guy with him asked, why did you do that ? He said, look at his parents, they are smiling. That is why i did it. I know that was an evil message. But it tells us about egos in life. Their parents was happy, because the kid was a problem child that did not think it needed them. When the guy punched the boy, he ran crying to his parents. And now with the broken nose it will stop relying on his looks to get through life. Most people are not pretty when they get older, and can't live their life by the looks they had when they was a beautiful child. My brother was this way, and i have seen it with many people. They used their looks to get what they wanted, and was not trained to live life without their looks when they got older. Not saying i was not a good looking kid. For some reason i listened to my parents and didn't treat people bad just because i was pretty. So i grew up early and started working for what i wanted at age 12. While my brothers and sisters used their looks to get what they wanted. They are all now poor and wishing they have what i have. I do not have children. I always said i would make a bad parent. Because i would not let them get away with anything and make them work for what they want. But your video has opened my eyes up to, I might have made a good parent. Because i would have prepared them for life, by not letting them get away with laying around. Like people i see these days. They would be mad at me now, but thank me later for preparing them for life's struggles.

Part of the problem with today's kids is the lack of corporal punishment. They've eliminated the old "board of education" in the schools, and the result is undisciplined doped up kids. Did you ever notice when they stopped paddling unruly kids that all of a sudden ADD and ADHD appeared on the scene? And the results being drugs for kids.

Danny you are extremely talented with homesteading and your house is beautiful. I always dreamed of a wraparound porch or a screened-in porch (I have a small porch which I am thankful for). Yes, I feel sometimes that way about my job. It has gotten so difficult since major changes in the coding classification system and sometimes I feel I am not smart enough to keep up. I find myself in a fog-like state of mind sometimes because that comes with my thyroid problems and getting older. Sometimes I do feel I am not doing what I am suppose to do but hopefully I will be led on that pathway I am meant to be one.

I have a leather belt that I use on my kids when they are naughty. I get compliments from people all the time about how good my kids are,but the minute I say I have a belt and they know I will use it. People get so upset they think your trying to harm them. My response is look at our younger generations that are entering adulthood. They are entitled little brats. That's why parents don't enjoy their children they run the parents life and make it a living nightmare. Take your child in hand and raise them don't put them in front of a screen.

As a mother of two autistic son's I have been verbally abused many times by people who make snap judgement's about my children and myself. I can't count the times I've been told "If you would just bust their butt's they wouldn't act like that". My son's normally were very well behaved but when external factor's became too much for them they would have meltdown's. I always tried to remove them quickly but was not always fast enough to escape the nasty comments or verbal abuse. My son's got spankings when they deserved them but not when they were unable to cope with sensory overload. People please think about the disabled before you verbally assault a mother trying to do the best they can.

I think we should try to learn the old ways like our grandparents did things ... so we will know how to do things without anyone’s help... I am fortunate that my Grannie & PawPaw taught me how to cook, can , fish, grow a garden, gather corn , pick peas , to shell em and shuck em, to snap the suckers off of your mater plants,to love animals & treat them good , to do some of the things they did in the old days , to be a country girl even though I was born in the city...and to work hard... I wish I could go back and learn more.... I remember thinking, when I was little , how funny it was that my Momma cut the end off the toothpaste tube and dug every bit of toothpaste out , and washed zip lock bags ... realizing after I was grown that she did it because she grew up during the Great Depression... and I thank God that she collected oil lamps and showed me how to use them ...I am not near as prepared as y’all are but I think I could survive... it is sad that most young people have No idea what to do if the lights dont come on when they flip the switch and if the water don’t flow when they turned on the faucet ... and call the older folks Crazy for telling them they should have extra food and water set aside in case some kind of disaster happens...

I still cut open containers to get every bit out of them! I save the cereal bags and use them for freezer bags. I'm always looking how I can use it up and re-use containers. Save a dollar here and there, it adds up and why throw something away that is still useful, but in a new way.

Parents need to not have rules that change from day to day depending on how the parents are feeling. Most kids have no idea how to behave because parents want to compromise what they expect in a kids behavior. I grew up getting a whipping for misbehaving and I don't consider it abuse. I have very good memories growing up my dad was the best dad anyone could have wanted but I knew if I lied, stole, disrespected my Mom, belittled someone, or showed my butt in public I knew without a doubt that I was going to get a wiping. My sister told me that now kids have the phone number of CPS on their ASB cards. I don't know if that would have stopped me from whipping my kids for not behaving right. My kids also knew what I expected from them and that they would get a whipping if the couldn't behave.

Danny you never stopped creating you just traded your paper for a bigger canvas, but 6 months or less you were paying for a big crew or lots of subcontractors. However I did sub for a developer in South Florida doing all the trim, and doors and we did 30+ houses in 1 year but it looked like an army working. Watching Porch Time freaks me out because of how similar our lives have been.

I think that the biggest problem is that kids today are so sheltered that it slows their maturity. You can't do this, you can't do that. Parents are way too over protective, and society is way too over protective. I see kids today that are 18 years old that have the mentality that I had when I was 12. It saddens me because it's my generation ( I'm 51 years old ) that is the root cause of the problem. I was working full time in the summer by the time I was 12, and bought my own car and had my drivers license by 16. I turned 18 on the day I graduated high school. That summer I was working for an excavating contractor. The first day I was there the first thing that happened...the owner of the company throws me a set of keys and says " get in that dump truck, hook up that trailer and run up to the welding shop and drop it off ( about 30 miles round trip ) that would NEVER happen today. It's not that the kids don't have the ability, it's that by over protecting them, we cause them to become withdrawn. That's why they sit there playing video games all day. For a lot of them, it's all that is left to do.

Danny I was told by a Doctor that the first five years of a child's life stays in the hard drive. Tough love I so much agree with you. You cannot be a parent and a friend at the same time. The Bible is our manual, everything we need to know in life is in the Bible. I'm living proof of the causes of DNA the thing's I hated in my mother I find myself doing lol. This generation is very different then what it used to be that is why the kids have the entitlement mentality, toss in the monkey wrench the schools are endoctrinating them. Thats what castro did in Cuba. Thank you for your time and wise words so much enjoyed this porch time. God Bless you, Wanda and your family. 💒

Danny, thank you for the advice. I want my children to grow up on the farm. Our society is completely backwards. I want my kids to run around in the woods just like I did when I was a kid. I'm probably gonna home school them because our public schools no longer respect our God or our nation. And I agree, I remember my friends mom saying that there was no manual to raise kids, but I said there's the Bible! It's an acronym: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth! Greetings to you and Wanda, God Bless!

IWillTeachThem! do that, home school. Schools have Common Core now and they indoctrinate them to have the opinion of the majority instead of thinking for themselves. They will never have any individual problem solving skills that way. It's all group think, the way the government wants us all to be.

You say that a child will not grow up to hate their parents because of being whooped. We'll let me tell you that that's not true. I hated my father until the day he died for the beatings I got. He almost killed me at the age of 4 from beating me with a belt. It was his means of punishment. The last beating I got from him is when I was 15 and 4 months pregnant. Almost lost the baby. And I didn't have the love for my mother because she allowed these beatings to take place. No I don't believe in physical punishment for young children. Now a tap on the fingers and the word no in conjunction is ok but beatings or whoopings are wrong. There is too much violence in the home now. I do not have to beat my grandchildren to make them listen. They know from my voice that they had better listen.

That was abuse not discipline. My father did the same to me and my brother. My two sisters were never beaten but we were all verbally abused every day.I don't hate my father because that was the way he was raised and did not know how to break the cycle.Fortunately my generation did.We know the difference between abuse and discipline and raised our children with love and proper discipline.

Wendy Benjamin You have a point and I would like to share something, since Danny has brought up kids he said from Japan and China and from other countries here and I often hear how Americans admire the behaviors of our children. I am Japanese. I believe in spanking for boundaries and do this, but we parents must remember to find the boundaries to limit ourselves. It was only until recently within 20 to 30 years that much of Japan's society knew the wider difference between spanking and battering. My father would beat and kick me. One day he beat me with an extension cord, and hit my ear canal. I lost hearing and cannot hear ever since. Danny is right that there must be a line not to cross or else it is extreme. Spanking is to be discipline, not trying to go crazy. It was a custom in my country to be quite militant parents and drive pain home into a child so that he behaves. Now, we still spank here in Japan, but we finally do not beat a child so violently like the old days. Also in my country today, one may look unfavorably at spanking in public. At home is a different story.

The Bible calls them familiar spirits. Demonic spirits that follow family lines. Either you let them lead or you allow God to lead through your teachings as a mother and father. Grandparents knows these things and sees them in their grandchildren because they know the past generation and let's see it in the generations to come. Praise be to God that when we accept Jesus, those generational things can be broken
