@@tenacity25 Because GTA is p2p, in the GTA community, the resulting lag is referred to as a "bubble". So what happened was that even in Duncan's pov, Duncan's bubble hit Ped and sent Ped into a spin. This is why it's so dangerous to drive close to another player at high speed in this game.

there is no server, or not one that runs the game anyway. GTA online runs on a peer-to-peer system - it's why it takes forever to load because it has to synchronize between all the peers in a session, and why a single person on a shitty connection can lag everyone else in a session. Everyone's client feed data into the server and it just takes whatever it gets and send an interpretation to everyone else, which is why everyone can have a different view of the action. It's also why it's so stupid easy to hack the game

In GTA, players while driving have a "bubble" around them because of p2p lag, so you should never get too close. In this case, even from Duncan's pov, Duncan's bubble hit Ped and sent him into a spin.

@@panner11 In fairness, "client / server" is no more "correct" than "peer to peer". It just seems like it because there's one central server to say "yes" or "no", and that server's decision is final. But, like, multiplayer physics is always "fuzzy" at best. With lag, with potential cheating, with chaos theory - so tiny binary point differences in variables can explode into completely different physical outcomes (like, if the physics steps are different lengths of time - and how can they not be with network lag times? - this results in completely different physics) - then this is basically an intrinsically unsolvable problem. And whether it's client / server or peer-to-peer, it's always the case that the server, or the clients between them, are just fuzzily choosing the most likely course of action and then agreeing to it. It really can't be any other way. p.s. We should be glad of games that do it "peer to peer", as that means they might survive after the game devs stop supporting it and close down their servers. If it's all "central server" - and they ain't supplying a dedicated server executable anywhere - then that game is just instantly dead.

With the Duncan-Ped collision it seems there was a desync of some kind and to Ped Duncan initially hit him, which caused him to swerve and drive into Duncan, Duncan on the other hand didn't see the initial hit, but still saw the swerve, making it look like Ped drove into him.

You got it, in GTA the desync creates a "bubble" around the cars, so you can hit other players with your "bubble" that goes beyond your model.

However in GTA races it is less natural to always be looking around. Duncan put his car where Ped’s car should have been but gave him no time or space to maneuver.
