Even in our study of the Old Testament, it is important to see Christ. God’s plan of salvation may be observed from the very first verses of the Bible, as we can see from the first chapter of John’s Gospel where he works from Genesis chapter 1. One of the ways we may experience this is by the Spirit’s use of motifs throughout the whole of Scripture. A motif is a theme that is repeated often throughout the Bible. Each time it is mentioned, it is again linked to the previous times mentioned. The result is a concept or theological thread that can be traced, leading to a fuller understanding of the theme.
The first two chapters of Joshua introduce several such motifs, three of which I will point you to in our study this evening: the scarlet cord, the believer’s rest, and transforming grace. Chapter 2 is almost a parenthetical account between chapters 1 and 3. This can be demonstrated by noticing that chapter 3 resumes the narrative of chapter 1. This is not necessarily to add more historical information but to bring certain theological meaning to Israel’s conquest. This meaning adds great depth and clarity to the conquest of Canaan by the people of Yahweh.
