looks great, we do alot of foodplots here in Illinois, have 80 acres set up, one thing we got involved in is pollinator program through nrcs and soil service they pay on contracts for 10 years putting in wildflowers, after 3 years we noticed the pheasant ,quail, turkey and deer really increased

Good vid. Questions: 1) How does the no-till drill cope with the rocks i.e. Does it get damaged much? 2) do you hot-zone fence areas near blinds to preserve them for hunting seasons, if not, why not?
@HuntinGrounds
@HuntinGrounds 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The no till does fine in the rocks. Doesn't really damage it. But with the rocks when I hit them it can release more seed when I hit them and make it where it doesn't evenly spread seed. And no I do not fence off any of these plots. My goal is to provide as much healthy browse as possible and if I have to fence it off I have too many deer per acre of food plot, and I have had that problem so I plant more acres to keep up with the deer browse pressure.

Huntin Grounds if it wasn't for you guys I wouldn't have any idea how to prepare my food plots. And would you suggest putting fertilizer down the first time?
@HuntinGrounds
@HuntinGrounds 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks I appreciate that. You can ad fertilizer for the first time but you don't have to but it can give your food plot a good boost. Even adding palletized lime can help more if you have acidic soil. It actually helps the food plot be able to take in the nutrients in the soil better

Great video man. Couple of things that could help with the old no till drill. Not sure how fast you go hard to tell from the video but the faster you go the more likly you are to get Mises from the planter and you could send in the distributors from the planter to be calibrated to help with how many seeds are put down at a time. Keep up the great content man.

I have a 1.5 acre food plot, and this is the first year I am planting on it. I cannot use anything with fertilizer because my sheep will eat it and get poisoned. Suggestions on what to plant? I thought about spreading some deer corn with my ATV every time I went hunting.
@HuntinGrounds
@HuntinGrounds 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don't use fertilizer. Maybe start with a clover mix then this fall you can topically apply a brassica mix with some wheat and rye.

Steve,my clover is about 8 inches tall, should I cut it or let it grow? And when should I cut it. Thanks.
@HuntinGrounds
@HuntinGrounds 6 жыл бұрын
I'd let it grow. If it starts flowering I'd cut it unless you want it to try and reseed itself. if you cut don't cut too short. Cutting can help control weeds to a point and I would only cut when you are not in a drought so the clover doesn't get stressed. Make sure it just rained or will soon in the forecast.

Awesome! Can’t wait to see how they turn out! We just brush hogged our plots so now we have to spray hem then plant. I’m not sure if you you use minerals at all but we started using anilogics mineral dirt and some other products and the deer are loving it! Also what drone do you use?

You talk about building an organic topsoil due to the rocks. Why not just chisel plow and disc what you already have to help break up that hard topsoil and add in some organic compost of aged manure and wheat straw? We notill soybeans and corn at our university farms but no tills don't work that great in rocky soil that's why we chisel and disc.
@HuntinGrounds
@HuntinGrounds 6 жыл бұрын
I've never chiseled and don't want to disk and I'm trying to do this the most cost effective way with out paying to add stuff to my soil. No tilling on rocks can be tough but it works and just watch how fast I build the soil on the new plot. I've already proved it on all my others.
@BuckhornConstruction
@BuckhornConstruction 6 жыл бұрын
Huntin Grounds chiseling is so much more effective in producing a better quality crop due to it aerating and breaking up the compacted layers of soil which allows for better root growth and root to soil contact. Building topsoil like you're doing is effective but after a few years of planting you will eventually have to chisel and disc or your soil will become compacted and hard for seeds to germinate and take root.
@HuntinGrounds
@HuntinGrounds 6 жыл бұрын
Well I'll see how it works. By not disking i'm allowing the worms to live and help aerate the soil plus the plants do the same. I run the tractor over it twice a year and soon hopefully none, just the atv with a no till attached to it so it will be much lighter
@BuckhornConstruction
@BuckhornConstruction 6 жыл бұрын
Huntin Grounds Worms are great aerators and produce great natural fertilizer but you need an astronomical number to actually see a big benefit from them on the acerage of plot you're planting. I'm excited to see how well everything turns out for you you've definitely got your head in the right direction. I've been doing crop and soil science work for the University Of Georgia for the last 8 years and our big crops are mainly soybeans and sorghum with some wheat and corn all are research crops. Pennington has done alot of deer plot research with us primarily their Durana clover mix. Never thought clover could grow and spread like kudzu until I saw Durana the first time. Very hardy stuff. Well good luck brother I've been following your channel the last few years and greatly enjoy your content.
