You just simplified something that seemed so complicated to understand. I've been chasing this information for more than a year. All of the countless articles I've read and videos I've watched just over complicated the subject because the presenters wanted to display how technical and smart they are. I think the visual of the finger just made it all click. Rob I Dub Thee Mr. Magic Fingers. You're obviously very smart but understand it's necessary to teach on a not so technical level which will enable the not so technical to understand. Thank you. P.S. don't point that finger at anyone!

Hi Rob, just wanted to say thank you! I’ve been a solo sound recordist who specializes in bigger live streams, and we now got us a QU series mixer. You really help answer some of my questions so quickly! I’m used to simpler mixer / recorders like Sound Devices or analog Yamaha desks. One question: What would changing between pre and post do to a master fader of a mix bus? Example: If I set the Mix2’s master fader to post fade. Does it now follow the lr main fader?
@soundadvicewithrob3083

Hi Rob! Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I have been using the QU16 for quite awhile and I am absolutely in love with it. I am currently doing livestreaming and it helps a lot. However, a lot of my clients do request I use Lapel microphones for my hybrid events, so I do need to feed their Lapel Microphones to the FOH as well as the stream. The problem I am facing here is that I do have to ring out the lapels for feedback and I do a lot of EQ cuts and compression on my FOH mixs and it will affect my mix on stream. My question is will the PFL mode still retain the global EQ as well as my compressors and gate when I send it though my Aux mix on stream? In an ideal scenario, I would like to send the lapels as clean as possible to my streaming setup and use Waves to denoise the Lapels so we get a super clean sound on stream without having the EQ to affect the quality of sound. Is that a possibility? Thank you so much for your time! 😊 Happy to have any pros chip in on this as well!

Thanks for the video. I’m having trouble understanding how I should patch outboard effects to the QU24. I have 4 outboard effects processors that I want to use with the QU24. I have 8 open channels if I need them but I’m not sure how to use outboard gear with a Send/Receive type of connection on the QU24. There are no send and receive connections on the back, like many other mixers I have used. Can you help by pointing me in the direction of a website or video that helps with typical setup patching for the QU mixers? Allen & Heath doesn’t seem to have anything where it shows how you could patch these mixers.
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 3 жыл бұрын
You probably won’t find much online on the subject due to the fact that one of the feature functions of most digital boards is to eliminate the need for outboard gear. This is why a digital board does not typically have channel insert jacks...processing is intended to be internal. There are lots of output options on the qu24 though, so you should be able to send a dedicated signal out to outboard gear and bring the return back into an available channel.

Do you know if you're connecting your IEM's through the dSnake with the ME-1's do the FX mixes still get sent and if so do they follow the same pre/post fade logic that you outlined in this video? I wasn't sure if when connecting through the dSnake it would still get assigned a Mix channel i.e. Mix 7-8, Mix 9-10, etc. Thanks for the videos!
@soundadvicewithrob3083

Hi Jason. Glad you enjoyed the video. FX returns can be assigned to a button on the ME1, to allow the user to dial in the amount of FX they want to hear. FX send is only controlled at the board and NOT the me1, so the pre/post logic doesn’t change. You could also assign a Mix channel to a ME1 button, but again the configuration of that mix is done at the board and cannot be mixed on the me1

Thanks Rob ! Clear and helpful ! I need help and a confirmation from your part : i’m using à QU16 for rehearsals, and as I need only monitor mixes, and more than eight, i use the L/R as a monitor mix. My problem is that I think that the fx sends in the mixes 1 to 8 are depending on the L/R amount of fx. Am I right ? And what could be the solution to get individual fx amount in the monitor mixes, and the L/R. Hope it was clear (and sorry for my poor english). Didier
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 жыл бұрын
Thx. Yes typically FX are set as postfader so that the fx follows the changes to the channel fader. Eg. When you bring down the fader on a mic channel, you (typically) want the FX to aslo be turned down. Without it (or prefader) the amount of FX would continue even though the mic channel had been turned down and even off. If you do actually want FX not to follow the LR channel changes then set the FX to prefade.

Underdtood, but if I assign my fader 1 to 8 , to a DCA does it affect my send pre ? post ?
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dory, welcome to the channel. First let’s understand that there is no audio associated with a DCA. It is simply a “remote control” for the channel faders that are assigned there. It allows you to adjust ch1-8 as if you used 8fingers on the faders at the same time. It just makes that move easier. So to your question directly... if the channels are set as pre fader, then adjusting the faders does not affect the send, therefore the DCA won’t affect the send. If the ch is set as post fader, then adjusting the faders will affect the send, therefore adjusting the DCA will affect the send. Hope that helps

@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Жыл бұрын
Well since you posted this question in the comments of “my” video, I guess the person to explain should be me LOL. Yes your description is exactly a preand post fade issue. When changes made to the LR layer (typically your FOH) affect an output levels, then your mix/aux output is set to post-fade. To reverse this and allow the mix/aux (or in your case the ME1) to be independent of FOH changes that output must be set as pre-fade

Hi Rob, Thanks for a very useful video. I have a question about the hybrid config section of the video where you have used post fade processing on mix 3 and have set all the mix 3 faders to unity including the mix 3 master? I am assuming that setting a fader on mix 3 to unity means that the volume level for mix 3 will be set to exactly the same as the volume level set for L/R for the same channel, with no adjustment up or down (because the mix 3 master and channel faders are both set to 0dB). If this assumption is correct, then if (for example) the mix 3 master was set to unity and a fader on mix 3 was set to -10db, and the L/R fader for the same channel was set to -20dB, then the volume set for mix 3 for that channel will be -30dB ..... ie. the volume level for a mix 3 channel will be the volume level set for the corresponding L/R channel with an adjustment up or down based on the mix 3 fader position relative to unity. Is this correct? Thank you!

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thanks Rob! I was not the original question asker in this thread but I still thank you for replying. I just jumped in because the context of the original question was relevant to my question. As a side note, I am afraid that the low usb volume with the Qu is going to cause our church to start losing listeners so I am debating going back to our Focusrite interface while I continue to learn the mixer. I hate to use analog outputs on a digital mixer for streaming to an external interface when the mixer is an interface itself. I have worked on the gain staging relentlessly but haven't reached a good enough stream volume yet. I plan to return to using usb outputs for streaming once I learn the mixer better. We had purchased it during Covid for outdoor services and I just recently moved out a Midas analog from the sanctuary to familiarize myself more with digital while deciding on a larger digital replacement. Again, thanks for your videos and sharing your knowledge.

Yes the ME system can run in pre-fade mode (and prob for exactly the reason you have discovered). The ME monitor signal follows the Global Direct Out Settings on the Routing tab. Choose Routing, then set the options to "Post PEQ, Follow fader Off, Follow mute On" That's just the default suggestion and you can adjust as needed. It most likely that your Direct out is currently set as "Follow fader ON" and that's why FOH changes are affecting the ME units.

@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 3 жыл бұрын
There are a couple of ways to create a stream mix. Each have their pros and cons. The “best” option would be a prefade mix dedicated as the source for your stream. Prefade will allow you to create a completely separate mix for the stream as well EQ it independently. the downside of a prefade mix is that you have manage it completely independently. it works best if you have a engineer focused solely on mixing the streaming mix, and leaving the FOH engineer to mix the sound in the room without concern for how FOH might affect streaming. You could use a post fade mix so that FOH changes also change the stream mix which can work well if you are a working solo in the booth. it can take a bit extra work to setup initially, but can allow one person to create both a good FOH mix and a good streaming mix

Rob, I am a videographer and will be recording in an out of town venue that uses the QU16. Because it isn’t practical to visit the venue (several hundred miles away) in advance, I’m trying to get clarity on exactly what I need to do in order to get a pre-fade out (via XLR) to my camera from the QU16. I’ve never worked with the QU16 and want to be as prepared as possible when I load-in, which is morning of the program. Any specific guidance you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, in advance! FYI, the feed does not have to be stereo, but can be.

Great question. Lets start by asking exactly what you will be recording? Is it a wedding with 2 or three mics? Or a conference with a single speaker/presenter. Maybe a concert setup with a full band? Is the local tech willing to provide you with a dedicated mix output from the board or are they only offering you single output?
@chelhanvideo9891
@chelhanvideo9891 3 жыл бұрын
Rob, it is actually a very simple dance concert with canned music and a single mic used to make a handful of announcements between routines.

Ask the local tech to provide a dedicated prefade mix for your use. Assuming that will monitor the feed, simply ask them to adjust send levels as needed.

Rob, thanks for the suggestion. I try to plan for worst case scenarios because too many times, I’ve arrived on site only to find someone as green as myself in terms of sending a mix from a board I’ve never worked with. My main objective right now is to make sure I know when I arrive exactly how I will get that feed to my camera. As an example: let’s say they are only using the first couple inputs, one for canned music from a CD and the second for an announce mic. For sake of this example, let’s also say I’m running my XLR cable FROM mix 5. To ensure I’m capturing a pre-fade from mix 5, do I 1) select mix 5 from the mix select on the far right of the board, 2) select pre-fade for the first two inputs, 3) set the first 2 inputs to unity .... then what? Or, have I totally misunderstood your video? BTW, I am able to monitor the input to my camera and have some adjustments I can make there. I just want to make sure I’m getting a feed from Mix 5.

Yes you have the right idea for mix5. Also just be sure that once you select mix5 you also bring the master fader up to the desired level.

Hi Rob, quick question. Can I get my USB recording to be pre fader so that if I adjust levels on my LR mix I don't feedback in my rehearsal room, but then I'm Able to get my channels recorded on USB with just the gain? Hope that makes sense

Again, USB recording is direct out by default so it wont be affected by fader positions. Just be sure you gain stage correct to make sure you have a consistent signal at gain

We are struggling to get an independent mix on the ME1. When the FOH engineer turns something up or down it effects the volume on our ME1 in our ears. I am guessing this is a patching or routing configuration issue. Please help
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 жыл бұрын
Typically an ME1 unit becomes its own independent mix with signals from assigned channel being direct out. LR changes should have no impact on the ME1 unless you have LR assigned as an input to the ME1 and are listening to that input
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 жыл бұрын
Any chance you have a FOH engineer who wants to set faders to 0/unity then mix volume levels using the gain controls?? Its about the only way I can think that LR adjustments would impact an ME1
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply.

6:02 Why are you setting all the faders to unity on that mix? Why does it matter where they are?
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 2 жыл бұрын
In that example we decided to set the mix to postfade. Levels in that mix will then follow any change made in LR however there still needs to be a level on the mix. You could already tweak them to change their relationship to each other and LR but yes there still needs to be a level in that mix. 0 was just an easy place to start

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 so if I understand this, when I have say Mix 9/10 faders at unity and post fade, then I would still have the ability to boost certain channels by a little or drop them down a bit in Mix 9/10? For instance I found in our live stream some instruments may not be heard as well as they are in the LR mix, so I could boost them a bit by raising the faders above unity in the 9/10 mix. Or if I wanted to reduce a certain mic level in the live stream I could fade it out in the 9/10 mix while leaving it up in the LR mix? Do I have that right? Thanks!
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 Жыл бұрын
@@charlespatt yes that’s exactly right. Faders at unity in Mix9/10 can be considered a starting place but can certainly be changed to customize that mix

How come sometimes a microphone or instruments volume is good in house mix but very low in aux (stream) channel?
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 3 жыл бұрын
Make sure that your stream aux is set as pre-fade. This ensures that the level of the channel in the aux is independent of LR. If the aux is post-fade, then the level is first set by the LR level and that may not be enough to get aux level up where you want it.

@@soundadvicewithrob3083 Thank you. Currently using Post fade because we only have one audio engineer to monitor both live and stream, that’s why the in house mix fader control is expected to be mimic simultaneously to the stream channel. What confuses me is with Post fader- the stream should behave like a clone of house, but apparently its not. Some mic is too low and sometimes some instruments volume are also not 100% identical level /sound wise. Not sure if it’s because KZbin auto limiting it. But you know what, I will try your suggestion will use Pre Fade. It sounds like there’s more control with that, might be difficult for one person but if that can produce better results then good. Is the Gain staging once done- automatically copied in the stream channel? or need to re adjust gain manually to all channel in stream mix? Thanks!

There is only one gain per channel. There is no function to set channel gain for LR and another gain setting for a Mix output
@soundadvicewithrob3083
@soundadvicewithrob3083 3 жыл бұрын
Your stream mix may actually be a clone of the FOH mix, but mostly likely they will never sound the same. FOH mix is set based on how it “sounds” in the room. Acoustic instruments produce lots of sound in the room and mic channel settings reflect that theres already lots of volume so they are probably set fairly low. In some cases ive seen people complain that some instrument (eg bass guitar) cannot be heard in the stream, but in reality they admit they never mic the bass because its already loud enough in the room. The mix for a stream and for the live room FOH will be two very different sounds and cloning one to the other will seldom work well.

Thx Gareth. If you still hear that channel in a Mix after pulling down the fader in LR then somewhere along the line that channel is assigned as prefade. Maybe you have added the channel to a DCA that is prefade
