i have several notebooks. 1- rough notebook ( i write anything in it) 2- checklist ( use it for daily to do list in checklist structure) 3- books name (names of books i want to read in the near future) 4- business idead ( any revolutionary idea goes to this one) 5- curious questions ( i think a lot so i always have a ton of questions) 6- FTD : fool things i have done ( a notebook in which i write my mistakes and how to correct them) 7- goals ( what are my annual, monthly and weekly goals are) because sucess is goals 8- article / book ( any article or book idea :i havent written any yet🥲 9- business plans 10- quotes 11- list of people i wish to meet and learn from. ( this one is really helpful , i have a good list but the problem is most of the people are from western countries and i am from india so i have to either spend money to visit them or do online interview. you guys have no idea how lucky you are just because you are born there. )

I got really big into Bujo when I moved into management at work. It really helps me keep on task, keep my priorities straight, and make sure things don't get forgotten after being put on the back burner. I use a dot page notebook from amazon and a pilot vanishing point fountain pen. I love it.

Depends on the size. I keep a small one for quick writing. A medium about a5-ish for work related things. Keep a minimum of 3. The 3rd one can be a planner of some sort. Am just a geeky nerd 😅😂😂

Notes: Pen and Paper, sometimes note app on the phone Journal: typewriter or fountain pen and paper I journal on anything now especially when I just need to let my emotions flow out. Journaling is like taking your thoughts out into the world and giving them a concrete form, whether be on paper or screen. I did started and loved typewriting. Went on hoarding a few machines and eventually sold them again and kept two. Now I write with a stub Twsbi fountain pen and whatever random notebook I can find at home. I love it. 😁👍

Currently I have a commonplace/messy notebook/bujo that I take with me wherever I go and a meditation journal. I started adding an index (again, very messy and unordered) to every notebook I use. I gave up on having too many notebooks and making it pretty, just accepted my messy brain and messy notebooks and now I use it because it's easy.

At some point in my life, I find messy notes or messy stuff at home or on the desk NOT AT ALL bad. I think if I were very very tidy in writing my notes, I would complain to my future self, "how BORING I have been!"

Back when I was in school I'd take my little blue notebook everywhere, filling it up in tiny handwriting with a bit of everything, short stories, musings, thoughts, both in Portuguese and English. Took me four years to fill it up. It was my company on the worst days of my depression and the only place I felt that I could be sincere. Before that, I would have a notebook for each thing, but then I'd grow bored of the idea and the notebook would be unfinished. I stopped having the need to have it by me when I got better - which was bittersweet. I miss constantly writing and how clear everything became afterwards. I miss having a small notebook that everyone recognized. But whenever I try to recreate it, I end up with half filled notebooks, with uninspired ideas

I’ve tried digital note taking. My experience was that I did not remember them as well. Physically writing on paper helps my brain to slow down and actually think about the content. I come up with more questions with physical notes. I keep a journal and commonplace books.

My uncle carried a pocket notebook & pocket diary his whole life. They went everywhere with him & he jotted down information of some importance. As a train driver he needed to know his roster on hand & after he died they all neatly stacked in a shoe box.

@@Fclwilson As a 4 time attendee at university I found the old manual note taking to be the best method to learn things. I prepare a manual pocket note of my To Do Lists & this is a prime reason to always have a crib list. As a former law enforcement officer - our pocket notebooks are our life as these are often used in preliminary investigations & are subject to be used as evidence in court. These notebooks are all hard bound with numbered pages too.

I found this video so interesting, because I journal in kinda the opposite way; I have one notebook with everything in it, rather than many notebooks that all have their own specialty. It's nice, because the notebook becomes a part of my life for a time, I have lots of life context around each page, and I can have a nice/fancy notebook that I actually use up. Regarding smooth writing utensils, you may want to learn about fountain pens. I just recently finally figured out what they were, and based on what you like about your pencil, you might like them.

I work in the arctic and lead does not freeze. Pencils don't have batteries that crash when they get cold. I'm with this guy.

I love the feeling of writimg with my fountain pens on paper. I tried the digital way and it just not the same. I have a dot grid journal that I write everything in and it’s always with me. I have always been pen/pencil and paper girls since I learned to write.

I completely understand. I call myself the Notebook Queen. I have always gotten notebooks. If I use one up, I cannot go about my day as normal. It doesn’t feel right. I can’t comprehend the digital note taking. It still feels like it is there in your thoughts. Digital note taking doesn’t feel solid or permanent. I get this $0.79 notebooks usually (super basic) nothing fancy. I sometimes get the tiny ones for my purse or pocket.

I use notebook like a phone mostly. I have a little notebook. THAT HAS EVERYTHING. Like I don't remember how I got there. But sometimes I dont need Google because I can just search it in my notebook if that make sense? Like when vitamins help for what when I can take them and what vitamins goes with each other and with what medicines I should not take it. How to make different type of teas and many other things I often need but can't keep In my head. it is just examples. It is actually lots more. I also have poems in it (that I wrote) english is a language I learn by myself so don't mind my mistakes. I am only beginner. Thank u

I too hand write my notes, because it does help me remember better. But I hand write them with a pencil on my iPad. For me it is the best of both worlds. I use an app called Notes Writer Pro which gives me the flexibility of dozens of different types of "papers" that I can place in lots of different "notebooks". It keeps my life streamlined while giving me that tactile, memory-enhancing experience of hand writing.

When given a task that isn't repetitive, easy and mindless, I immediately run to a notebook and pencil. I make sure to jot down primary tasks, sub-objectives, and any relevant observations I come across, all of which are clearly marked according to each category. One of the best parts is being able to tick a task as completed; another is knowing exactly what page to look up for that one bit of info that's just proved essential.

I love the idea of "a textbook for my career." I have been doing this for a few years working in an engineering lab. I started on my first day with a cheap generic notebook, writing reminders and technical notes of how systems work, step-by-step instructions, and useful notes like names of people and things that they specialize in. This year I am continuing the habit with a dedicated work notebook (Rettacy A5 spiral) that I keep in my backpack to and from work.

I'm definitely able to remember something better if I physically write it. For a couple of years, I carried a little notepad and pencil with me and if I needed to write a reminder for myself, I would write it down there, and most of the time when the time came for me to do what I needed to remind myself to do, I could remember it on my own because I remembered that I wrote it down. I realized at some point that I could send a text message to myself, but it wasn't the same. I would often forget it, and what I would have to do is send the text to myself and then exit out of the messaging app fast enough that the message would go out and then come back and it would be left as an unread notification that was always there at the top of the screen. I've now come back around to carrying a pocket notebook and a pen to use to write reminders. doing it all with a phone eventually worked for a while but something with android broke a while ago and now my phone more often than not doesn't notify me of reminders i've set for myself. a notebook is cumbersome but it just works. it always works.

Thanks a lot, Cote! I too carry around a moleskin in my pocket (the slightly larger black ones), and finish one nearly every two weeks. You were spot-on when you talked about taking notes on paper vs computer! I never saw it that way, until now; and thanks for bringing me to that conclusion (how with the computer its never quite out of ones head)! You might agree or disagree: I feel as if writing in these little books is almost like looking into a mirror that can see through oneself, and into ones own mind. Thanks again for the video. I probably do physical and digital notes in equal proportion. If it's something I know I'm going to reference later I do digital (though often a rough draft physically first) or a document I know I'm going to add to over time and I want all the information to be kept together. A lot of longer term projects ends up as that. Generally I find organisation a lot easier when it's digital. But I also have physical notebooks with me where ever I go, I write anything from tasting notes of coffee (I work as a coffee roaster), lists of things I need to get done short term, stuff I know I will later transfer into my digital system, my daily journal etc etc

Oh, it makes me happy that someone in the world still writes anything by hand! I barely do that anymore. If nothing else, it makes me sad how my penmanship has gone to crap. I was always complimented on it. I even used to do (amateur) calligraphy. No more. It looks like garbage these days. Not only do I not have much reason/opportunity to write by hand anymore, but there's no possible way my hand can keep up with my brain. If I tried to slow it down, I'd forget what I wanted to say! I've been typing for decades now, and the keyboard is now how I "think." Sigh. Anyway, this made me happy. I hope you never lose that. It will likely be harder when you're done with school. And wow, I didn't know "fancy pencils" was even a thing. Now I'm curious.

When I write digital notes, I feel as I haven´t really written them? Analog notes, whether they be on my notecard system or my journal, feel as if my mind processed the information and then dumped it onto the page, because of my handwriting. Great video!

Maybe you can give Rocketbook a shot? The latest multi subject notebook has the more paper like feel to it. But maybe to just give a try you can start with a mini which is a small notepad, I think that paper feels a bit more glossy (It’s an erasable notebook where you can store notes digitally if you want, you do have to use Frixion pens to be able to erase) it might be a good additional tool to have. I also can’t let go of writing by hand. (You get the experience of writing by hand and the convenience of being able to organize your notes digitally I use One Note, very easy to access and interact with further by marking it up on my iPad) I remember the experience of writing a piece of information when I try to remember something. (I would say that I do have that fear of losing everything lol, but it could happen to physical notes also, they can get damaged)

Artist here and heavy tech user here. I have a graphical tablet with a display and just got a new one. Physical has some advantages: 1) Freedom and ease of expression. You have complete and intuitive control over the pen and what ends up on the page. Drawing on glass is like having a extrememely lubed up paper and pen. The glide makes it harder to be precise. Do you want a drawing? Just draw it 2) if you decide to use a drawing program to effectively do the same thing. The feeling and "resistance" paper gives is hard to mimic by drawing on glass (heaven forbid you use a mouse, i pity the poor soul who has attempted digital drawing with a mouse) 3) Every piece of paper is effectively a immediately accessable second display. Its a static display but a display nonetheless. You also do not have to go around opening files. Its just immediately there.

I am still actively trying to switch to writing again coming from an S22 Ultra (which has a built in pen) I do miss the automatic backups and having access to everything. But the writing part with an actual pen vs a small one on a screen has improved painfulness in my hand by many.

Think about writing. When we write, we are “drawing” our ideas and spatially relating one to another. Afterwards, we can “see” what we were thinking. Now think about a paper map. We can look at a map and see at a glance our direction, surroundings and destination. Now google maps, we can’t easily see these things. Rather, we’re led by a very helpful digital “guide” to whom we delegate our situational awareness. But if that ‘guide’ somehow disappears, we’re boned. My point is this: let’s keep digitization on a short leash.

I like the map analogy- I think in my life the note taking side of digitization and map side of digitization are mostly separate, but definitely connected by their potential to be digitized. I think we could take the map part even further by saying that Google maps /and/ physical maps make it more difficult to create the mental maps we rely on to traverse familiar places. One effective alternate for me has been handwritten notes on iPad, especially for academic notes that I want to be always accessible to me. But yes, there is absolutely no replacement for analogue note taking when it comes to commonplace books, Journaling, BuJo, etc etc. I have a commonplace, a BuJo, and a free form journal at the moment and I pretty much use one pen for them all. Keeps things simple and stress free and effective. BTW, wonderful video! ❤️

I feel the same way about losing everything but with my physical notes. I can keep several digital backups both offline and on, and have access to them at any time. But I also love taking physical notes so my method is to write things down physically and create a digital archive by scanning them.

Hey, I just watched this video and no idea if anyone will see this since the video is a bit older. Anyways I find that when I write with pencil, the writings overtime tend to fade, smear and transfer to the other page (if you close your book and the two pages of the spread lie on top of eachother.) So does that happen with the fancy pencils too? Because so far that is why I don't use pencils. I do like ballpoint pen for my daily planning or daily log and the rest of my notes, journal, commonplace notebook (I currently only have three notebooks) is written in fountain pen. Anyway loved the video!

It's weird, it never happens to me... Usually this problem is from the thinness of the paper. When I use poor paper it can spread, but with normal or good quality paper (a bit thicker paper, I love the 90g, but it's more expensive) I never had a problem and I use fountain pens for over a decade now... Maybe is it the problem for you?

I did a Maths degree recently. There's no way you can take notes digitally that makes sense except for something that emulates pen and paper. I purchased a Galaxy Note tablet and tried it for about a month before giving up and going back to paper. The computer is excellent for presentation, LATEX can present beautiful mathematical symbolism, but no way are you going to do your working that way, it would be 20 times slower. The Galaxy was as good as it got but scrolling around all over the place through dozens of pages rather than just spreading them out when trying to get difficult proofs and ideas together was not worth the very minor saving in weight. And if I wanted to, I could photograph my notes to have them always available digitally. But when you are talking about proofs that sometimes spanned 4 or 5 pages and drew on skills from all over a course, using a screen was just torture.

If I type down notes, I'm all but guaranteed to forget them beyond short term. After a long time with just a smartphone, I started carrying a small notebook and mechanical pencils, and my productivity and efficiency have skyrocketed. We have a difference, though: I stick to one notebook and do my darndest to write in it fully.

I love to write things down in a notebook. Writing stuff down does help us remember better. But..... you can write things down on your ipad using goodnotes on a blank sheet, lined or graph and the other reason that keeps me returning to goodnotes is your notes are all searchable. You cannot search your notes on analog.

A pen/pencil and paper don't spy on you, don't collect your data, don't send your data to a third-party company to analyze it and sell you personalized ads. The lines and the way your handwriting is, help you reflect on your emotions, are you happy? You'll see it in your handwriting, are you nervous? You'll see it too, pens and papers helped me notice my emotions way better, and I'm happy that many people still acknowledge the power of simplicity and authenticity that come with handwriting

Pen and paper has no substitute in terms of experience.. But it has some huge cons .. where iPad or digital notes comes in .. and those are - retaining notes for long time. - accessing them when at need.. - new things entry that is not planned - space .. notebooks keeps piling up iPad or remarkable like Devices are expensive, whereas pen and paper is cheap..

I have same phobia about losing my digital. But I have TONS of both paper journals and 10 years of digital files too... I like the digital though when I need to search by topic of what I'm looking for and I have them organized so much better.. But writing is FAR more therapeutic... So I'm torn really

Do both! I've developed a system for myself where I typically write short term things, my rough outlines of a subject, daily journaling and lists on paper, then transfer them into a obsidian note taking system where I make things more concrete and organised. I find this helps me remember things more and make for a system that's relatively free of clutter making it more searchable than a full on digital note taking system. Also the act of processing information more times and narrowing it down to the important points is really helpful in finding what's actually important in your life

What's ironic is that some of those digital productivity apps make you even less productive because they make you spend all your time on them instead of spending time on your actual work or project. The more customisable the app is, the more it sucks your time. Notion is especially notorious for this. Evernote and OneNote, not so much because they're mainly used for archiving purposes (clipping articles from media and blog sites).

Hey Sam, are those lecture note books 4in by 6in? Maybe use a ruler on your video to show the dimensions. I like the daily log. I've seen and have a few. I havent destroyed any so far tho. I like specific experiment note books Ho, methods, observtns, conclusions etc replication etc where did you buy black wing 602 pencils? Finally, where did you buy the Precise V5 pens? amazon?

The lecture notebooks are 5x8.25in notebooks (size large moleskine). I usually get Blackwing 602's from the blackwing website or bookstores that sell them, and I get precise V5 pens from Staples. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

Wow.. in 2023 people still seriously use pen\pencil to paper for note taking. Been doing paper notes since 1992. Starting going digital around 2007/2008.Wasn't till about 2016 that I felt fully comfortable with digital notes to the point that I I felt like I was retaining all my notes I made digital in my mind. Now I don't ever look back. I archive all my digital notes and it can be accessed anywhere. The search capabilities alone is life change going back for more than a decade. The amount of notes I can take vs the time it takes to hand-write them is astronomical and I feel like I gained a second life back. And when I have a large a mount of notes I need to dump while I am on the move, I've gotten real good with Voice to Text transcribing. I can never go back, but that said I will be totally screwed when the apocalypse comes and we are back to using paper and pencil.

Whatever works. I've lost all of my hundreds of notebooks from decades of taking notes pencil and paper because they take up a lot of space, and are difficult to find things fast. And seeing my messy handwriting makes me feel depressed. I would never want to go back to that, just like I'd never want to go back to cars with no seat belts. The key thing for remembering your notes is not the kind of system you are using, but the act of putting the notes into your own words. Putting things in your own words requires that you think carefully about the words instead of just copying someone else's words, and linking them to other notes with a related idea. But do whatever works. For instances where I need to remember things more completely, I'll just use an iPad and an Apple Pencil.

The thing is that I am just too tired of finding the perfect notetaking app. They are all behind pay walls and I don't trust anyone app enough to pay for it. I would much rather take paper notes because I own all of my information
