I run GP5000 tubeless 32c, with pressure set to give 15% rim drop (47/50psi). My local roads are coarse chip and seal with lots of jarring cracks - so I went for comfort and grip.

3 years ago I started using schwalbe pro one 28mm much to the amusement of my buddies who thought I was going off road with them. They actually measured about 31mm on my rims so I have replaced them with the current Pro one 30mm. Riding at 60 psi on a tubeless setup give less punctures and stopping by the roadside. Comfort is everything on our local c roads.

Wider only helps if the casing is extremely supple (flexible but not stretchy). If you can get that (e.g. FMB tubulars or Rene Herse clinchers), you're golden. Note that tires used to be, a LONG time ago, a very reasonable width -- we're finally getting back to sanity after the ultra-narrow craze.

So, what will it take for tires/rims to get back to "a very reasonable width" and "sanity" once they start getting to 35mm+ for rims and 45C+ for ROAD bikes?!?

I have an older, mid 2000s, Specialized Sirrus Sport hybrid commuter bike. It came with Alex R500 rims and 700C, 28 mm. I haven't measured the internal width of the rims yet, but from what I've gathered online, they're supposedly only 14 mms. My bike was already more of a flat, upright style, but I changed the stem riser and handle bars to make it even more upright. Now that I'm in my early 60s and fairly out of shape, I'm more interested in just getting back on the bike and cruising it around town with maybe a bit of easy gravel road riding, like one might do on an old English Roadster style bike. My question is, what is the widest tire that will safely fit on these rims bearing in mind that I have no interest in road racing, mountain biking, hard cornering and going fast? I'm reading 28 mm on the charts, but is that written in stone? It seems odd that the tires it came with would be the widest possible tires that could ever fit in the rims. Could I go as high as 32mm or even 35mm, like some of the newer 3 speed Roadsters have? I've checked the rim brakes and frame clearances and they're pretty huge, like well over 50 mm. The rims are the only question mark here.

Vittoria Corsa G in 25C with Vittoria latex inner tubes, pumped up to ~105 PSI front and ~110 PSI rear (I weigh ~180 lbs./~82 kg). (My frame barely allows these to fit, so I could not go to the current 'trendy' 28C-32C 'balloons' even if I wanted to, which I most definitely do NOT.) I will get dissed for riding even that much pressure nowadays, but I'm from the old school, and was racing LONG LONG before most of you're PARENTS were even born, on Clement Criterium Seta tubulars pumped up to 150PSI+ regardless of road conditions! Also, those pressures have come down from almost 140 PSI when I was still running 23C Vredestein Fortezza Slicks with latex tubes inside!! OH NOES!!! 😱 (So some of this new school 'tech' IS getting through to this old timer, but do NOT expect me to be dropping down to 60 PSI or lower like all of you young 'whippersnappers'! LOL) BTW; I am 2-3 times+ the age of most of you, and my back, body, etc. is holding up JUST FINE, even on some very rough roads at those pressures! (But the latex tubes and high TPI supple cotton casings probably help save me in that area, a bit. 😉) IF I wanted/desperately needed so much 'cush', I would get and ride a fat tire bike, which seems to be where this overly wide wheel marketing BS is heading, like a runaway train (but not that fast LOL).

Narrow tyres will in most cases be faster than wide tyres, for example for quick sportives I find that it's a little more difficult accelerating and climbing with 28c tyres, I can feel the tyre rolling resistance is greater than compared to a 25c tyre.

I run 25s on my old Cinelli Supercorsa, but they collect grit in the wet which sands away the downtube. I run 28s on most of my other bikes and they are great, but recently switched to 32s on my disc bike. I feel they are slower though. Recently did a long, hilly event and it seemed much harder than normal. Maybe I'm just getting old!

How much does an extra ~10mm really go in comfort? I ride frequently but very casually so I really don't care about speed. I choose to use footpaths on particularly unpleasant roads and my main complaint about my rides is the inconsistencies in concrete footpaths and kerb ramps. I have 35s but looking at getting 47s

I bought a gravel bike with clearance for 50mm tires that I use for gravel as well as my daily commuter. I have hatched a plan to buy a second wheel set so I can have a gravel set and a commuting/road set. What do you recommend for my road set? I’ve debated on going for a 40mm gravel slick (something like Panaracer gravelking slick). Is this advisable or something smaller?
@roadcc
@roadcc 3 жыл бұрын
depends how road you want to go? the gravelking is a great tyre, you could also look at options like the challenge strada bianca in 33mm and 36mm, or the schwalbe g-one speed in a 30mm
