Russia says its new hypersonic weapon is a technological breakthrough on the scale of Sputnik - the first satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. The Avangard is launched on top of an intercontinental ballistic missile. But unlike a regular missile warhead it can sverve sharply, making it much harder to intercept.
That's worrying the U.S. - that's also having to contend with China's development of hypersonic arms.
Beijing displayed the Dong Feng 17 at a military parade in October.
The U.S. defence secretary has said developing the technology is a priority.
So will the Avangard, which Russia says can fly at 27 times the speed of sound, change the balance of power?
Presenter: Dareen Abughaida
Guests:
Pavel Felgenhauer - Defence and Military Analyst
Tariq Rauf - Nuclear Arms Control Specialist
Paul Schulte - Former Director of Proliferation and Arms Control at the British Ministry of Defence

@@rhondaclark716 Hello! Generally what you expressed, it's your sharing about yourself & your vision. Good words, but what is your point? ...Why God didn't whisper to American Government in 1945 that there's no military necessity to drop nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities with millions of civilians? Why God doesn't see the names of most recent biggest sinners such as H.Clinton & B.Obama for destroying Libya, Syria & Iraq, where war & chaos caused millions of casualties again; for depriving people who live(d) in these countries of their basic & essential rights? Why God doesn't punish these two for contributing a lot in creation and support of ISIS (DAOSH) in Syria & Iraq? Maybe God just stacked with more important things to take care of...

The US wanted to keep the Arms Race going. And this is what we get. Read the PNAC manefesto which led up to 9/11, the Neocons wanted an excuse to build up our military such that we could fight three wars simultaneously and that no one could challenge us. Zbigniew Brzezinski wanted to take advantage of Russia's weakness by becoming "the first truly world empire" before anyone had a chance to challenge us. Israel wanted America to be its muscle man to balkanize their enemies in the Middle East so it could create its "Greater Isreal Poject".

Lt. Colonel Iraq was an invasion for sure, however when the term “imperialism” is used, it speaks of expanding an empire in the traditional sense as Imperial Japan did, when countries were subjugated. Iraq was regime change, what the people desire is democracy but it needs to come from the people of Iraq. We can help rebuild as we did with Japan but cannot and should stay permanently. Regime change, flawed as it is, is quite different than classical “imperialism “, and USA doesn’t practice imperialism in that sense.

Contrary to the panelist , this is a big changer weapon . Ultra high Hypersonic missiles that Russia developed , helps for the first time Russia , to achieve a first strike surprise attack on NATO ,without they even having a chance to fight back. The one that strike first gains a significant advantage in the fight.. The only thing Russia needs is mass produce them in big numbers. To sign a treaty with NATO benefit Russia nothing , until NATO disband first and remove all their military bases in Europe and in Asia too.

There are plenty of groups working together. Students of universities over the world and scientists are now more working together on sustainability and innovations and partnering up with multi national businesses. But this has still it flaws because of money and concurrency, so most of the new inventions are patented which doesn't make things any better on a global scale and we are back to square one.

Nearly all Americans want our troops to come home from Iraq and Afghanistan so they needed to create bogeymen out of Russia and China again. Unfortunately the people listen to CNN and MSNBC and they easily buy the propaganda. China for example hasn’t invaded anyone while we have invaded Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria just in the past 18 years. Russia only invaded Crimea after the coup and is in Syria at the invitation of the Syrian government. No coup, no invasion but people cannot understand this simple fact. Propaganda always works.

Michel Platteeuw No, much before Trump arrived!! The guy trying to fix and do the right thing to fix it all , the things that his predecessors for the last 50 years haven’t been doing anything about it ! All they did is just promote hatred with the East and send out American soldiers to fantasy wars in far lands where half of them die and the other half get mentally ill ! But when a president like Trump comes not to only do politics but to start fixing parts of the country problems and the wall is an investment a part of that helpful strategy, no , the ill of us stands against him to stop him, let’s leave America the way it has always been since ever , anything different they’re not used to , they oppose , bcs they fear the change! A bunch of cowards running the country , hidden in their high positions and all they do is provoke wars and economic probs to make more money and profits ! The dollars making machines of the government in the US are working now at super sonic speeds to keep level with the edging advance in military technology Russia achieved with quarter costs ! Billions of billions are being spent on wars overseas on unneeded conflicts with the world , yet the poor , hungry and homeless inside the US is reaching critical levels ! But no, all we see is a wall being built to strengthen national security and stop all illegalities across the boarders! And bit by bit help a genius at work to rebuild our kingdom from inside out! Not by winning wars and showing off bullying other smaller nations that we become richer but by fixing us from inside out! Look at examples of more successful nations like China , China did not need to invade and terrorize to become the richest and most self independent! Jesus lord bless our nation with the right wisdom 🙏

The plasma makes it almost impossible to track with radar, it also allows for nearly unlimited range. 7:40 everyone has failures... yes they are trying, its just that they also have failures. 9:50 No the Americans left the treaty when they realized that Russia had sea based cruise missiles and were able to deploy they in large numbers. US was also "cheating".... 18:00 Yes, they did. An ABM system is a one sided advantage that hyper sonic weapons counter. 19:00 Only US is talking about using low yield nuclear warheads.

Yes, according to them, they didn't see the returning Space Shuttles either, only the radio connection is not the problem of visibility, do you think there is only radar from the front? plaza max develops at the edges of the nose not everywhere ... therefore it is impossible to hit a small moving target with it because you can't communicate with it either, it goes in a fixed direction (zircon tale)

What the English dude is saying is "they could kill us before and their new hypersonic missile can kill us now nothing has changed. There is no new strategic advantage." A very English way of down playing the announcement from Moscow. Then at min 16:14 There is a great deal of distrust; because Russia will not tell the US how many missiles Russia has in Europe defending itself from NATO." Well that's kind of rich even for an English bloke. And the most stupid utterance the English dude said in the whole interview was the US has let its superiority diminish because there has not been a reason to compete.

Anything Russia can build the US has already had for 60 years. Hypersonic technology is not new, the moment sputnik made orbital velocity hypersonic technology was demonstrated though it wasn't a military weapon it could just as easily been one. When the Russians and the USA put a man in orbit and landed them via capsule they demonstrated the ability to bring any object weighing X amount and deposit that object at X location anywhere around the world, the fact those capsules did not carry weapons did not matter because they could have easily within a day swapped for a capsule of the same weight carrying nukes instead of people. the only thing different between that old technology and this "new" hypersonic technology is that the missiles are smart and have onboard guidance that can't be disrupted by jamming a radar signal, and each bomb can have a different target and each bomb can carry with it countermeasures and evasive maneuvers to slip past the defenses of anti-missile tech all this is entirely moot.. for russia to use these weapons they can't escape retaliation because of the nuclear triad ( submarines can launch nukes too without retaliation on them) also Russia and China and Iran and maybe Pakistan are buddies but, the USA has all of Europe a good chunk of central america, Canada Australia and most of Africa on it's side should a conflict arise. so the sheer number of allies and its decentralized nature makes retaliation so much harder for the Russians.. fighting a war on one or two fronts is hard enough but fighting on 150 fronts is insane. lastly.. America isn't stupid.. if we go to war with Russia their wont be a rocket that says made in america on it, the first attack will appear entirely natural, by every measure it will be natural, but it will weaken russia to a point that russia asks for the help of the usa and europe, and we will roll in with aid without firing a single shot, and your people will have legitimate elections and vote for the same rights and liberties that free nations enjoy and dictators hate and then when we pull out the war will be between the government and it's people who've been awoken not between the usa and russia.

You forget that US has many adversaries that can straightforward hit American soil. Venezuela and Iran will soon land Cruise missile onto NY and Washington necessating US to call some of strategic forces home to protect homeland. We don't have to cry for this situation to happen. There will be no winner but there will be destructions and deaths everywhere. Remember US was tested by Iran in Iraq and suddenly discovered that it has to be mild otherwise things would go astray for US

Most ppl think U.S should get hypersonic missile only cuz its new and exciting, but does U.S need hypersonic missile... If Russia and U.S were to use their nukes on each others, it likely wouldnt matter if hypersonic missile are deeployed or not, it wont be any current missile defense system that will able to shoot down 6000 nuclear missile, 600 missile, maybe 60 will be hit and taken down before it hits their targets Whenever Russia has developed something new, they tend to make it aswell known as possible, unlike America who usually keep it to themself Russia is a dog with a very loud bark America doesnt bark While F-35 was in development, while Su-35 was in development well Russia realized Su-35 wont stand a chance against F-35, so they developed their own Stealth fighter now there wont be need for ever dog fighting jet fighters in the future, with fast and accurate missile that will be able change flight paths so targets cant evade is way cheaper and less risky then to put a pilot, plane into possible danger Whatever Russia brags about, take it with a huge grain of salt

We need a treaty ASAP, no one should ever pull out of treaties in ICBM's and nuclear weapons. I do feel like the reason they were developing the missile has to do with the increase of anti missile defense systems in Europe and Russia felt surrounded and not capable of ensuring mutually assured destruction(MAD). I can understand developing drones and high tech for very precise small combat operations, but developing more capable weapons of mass destruction needs to be put to a stop by all countries and just kept at a a few thousand missiles per country, as that's what keeps balance balance while assuring mutual assured destruction and that keeps the world at peace, not constantly developing more and more.
