We love this video! Our videos are sort of an appetizer for history, so people that may be curious about it have a fun entrance point, so a video where a history expert gives context is perfect!

Actually Kaiser Wilhelm II urgend Franz Joseph not to declare war on Serbia, the Blank cheque was basically just confirming their already existing alliance, saying yes, in case of war, we will support you, but in a personal letter, Wilhelm II asked Franz Joseph not to escalate the situation.

Honestly, Austria (not Hungary) should've been partitioned between the war-torn Germany, Italy, Romania, Poland and Serbia (Yugoslavia). Hungary should've been at least saved, since they were the less-involved part of the empire.

I'd love to see someone cover the invasion of Belgium in more depth. We always hear about it as a quick footnote like being yeeted into France here, but that phase alone was a month long German invasion campaign against hostile territory and Germany did some pretty horrible things over the course of the war that followed.

It would be so interesting to have history class in another country. I’m sure in Belgium, they go super deep into all of that.
@Merennulli2 жыл бұрын
@@willowandluka5302 Absolutely. I would love to see each country put its own history classes online somewhere with good translation software. We are at least getting to see things like how the British teach the American Revolution now, so I'm hopeful having more and more of the world online will get us the opportunity to learn more of these perspectives.

Lol no kidding. Most people don't know how brave the Canadians are and some of the wild stuff they've done during wartime. I would take a Canadian watching my back over many of our other allies. The Austria Hungarians were probably looking for a war cause Serbia agreed to every other demand other than the investigation which was impossible since it basically was Serbia agreeing to give up its sovereignty. Germany also was going with the idea that if Austria Hungry did invade then they would do it immediately, while people were still angry at Serbia for the assassination but it took way longer than expected as well.

Mr. Terry. I've sort of realised that when Germany failed to secure France in the first month of it's invasion, they ultimately lost the war. Maybe you can elaborate on whether or not that's right or wrong. Secondly, I've also wondered if it wasn't the threat of Democracy that really caused Germany to [want] to invade anybody, really. But France was deemed the easy target. These are great videos you post in light of what's happening in Russia, China and North Korea. Is this, WW1, a harbinger to the end of communistic regimes as well?

From the German perspective Austria acted to slow. They assumed Austria would act immediately to use the wave of upset going through Europe. The blank check is actually a quite complicated topic. The deep reasons why Germany went through with it was since they expected that France and Russia planed a war at some point anyways (why else would France invest in the Railway infrastructure that was designed to help Russia to mobilise against Germany). And with the perception everyone outside of Russia had about Russia they expected to lose any war set in the future by virtue of Russia catching up in terms of industry and technology. So a war now was preferable and a lot of the other bad decisions followed from that assumption. The truth was of course that France did these investments expecting that Germany seeks a war at some future point (why else would Germany invest so much to be able to mobilise lightning fast against France ...). Classic catch 22 just on national doctrine level.

This video REALLY makes me wonder why Germany couldn’t have just gone through Switzerland or even Austria-Hungary & Italy into France if Belgium declined. Just wondering…
@SireRose2 жыл бұрын
Geography, right? I may be mistaken, but isn't Belgium mainly flatter lands with the Italian and Swiss borders to France being mountain heavy. Also wasn't Austria-Hungary in almost the opposite direction?

The German plan was to get to Paris quickly to make France capitulate to avoid a 2 front war. Belgium is closer to Paris, and it's also flat unlike the borders with Switzerland or Italy.
@alexking72622 жыл бұрын
@@drm9694 I know, but the French would’ve been unprepared if they tried ether of the two options I’ve just mentioned, & so therefore might’ve fallen quicker? Plus should’ve the Germans knew that going through Belgium might’ve gotten the UK into the war because of the 1839 Treaty Of London? Just wondering…
@alexking72622 жыл бұрын
@@drm9694 correct me if I’m wrong if the Germans knew about it signed the 1839 Treaty Of London, but they were involved in it & so therefore k ew about it, but the question on if they signed it or not is irrelevant because the Germans knew about the treaty & so therefore should’ve known that the UK was gonna most likely enter the war if they went through Belgium. Hence why I suggested they go through Switzerland or if Switzerland also declined, then take the long way through Austria-Hungary & Italy, it just seems like the more logical solution to me because sure the route is longer, but there’s NO way the French could’ve expected it, & both Austria-Hungary & Italy were ether the Central Powers &/or had an alliance with Germany, so it would make more sense to take the long route & take out France while at the same time NOT provoking any other nations into joining the Allied Powers & NOT completely destroying their reputation (at least in the Allied nations) at the same time! Just saying…
