How much blood can a human lose without dying, and how does the body replenish that blood once it's gone?

Does Giving Blood Make You Healthier?
www.seeker.com...
"Some donors believe that donating blood actually makes them healthier. That line of thinking is correlated with medical bloodletting. Once a popular treatment for many diseases all over the world, it hasn't been widely used since the late 19th Century. Although bloodletting has been largely discredited in the scientific community, a similar procedure became popular with the iron-store hypothesis, based on the idea that too much iron in the blood can increase our risk of cancer and heart disease."
Blood from Human Babies, Teens Rejuvenates Old Mice
www.seeker.com...
"Aging is a killer. Incidence rates for heart disease, cancer, kidney disease and dementia all skyrocket as people reach their 70s and 80s. There's no cure for getting old, but there may be a surprising simple, albeit somewhat medieval, way to turn back the body's internal clock and reverse the deadly effects of degenerative diseases."
How Much Blood Is in the Human Body?
www.livescience...
"There's enough blood in the human body to fill a bit more than a 1-gallon milk jug. The average adult has about 1.2 to 1.5 gallons (4.5 to 5.5 liters) of blood circulating inside their body, said Dr. Daniel Landau, a hematologist and oncologist at the University of Florida Cancer Center - Orlando Health. If you had no blood, you'd weigh 8 to 10 percent less. (Of course, you wouldn't be alive, either.) So, for example, in a person weighing 120 lbs. (54 kilograms), blood takes up about 9.6 to 12 lbs. (4.4 to 5.4 kg)."

I lost 4/5th of my blood over time and lived. Of course, when my blood test results came back, they immediately sent me to the hospital to get a transfusion. And I wasn't really fully functional, as I had barely any energy.

My fav blood fact? Something new I recently found out is that I'm AB negative, which is very rare at about 1%, however I can take ANY blood type in a transfusion and only other AB negative people can take mine. That makes my blood pretty useless I guess.

Spooksandooks - it is the same, arguably even more so. You can survive (though not enjoyably) with only 10% kidney function. Likewise, less than one lung and with marked deterioration in liver function. But what does "survive" mean? Such impaired organ function won't kill someone in hours, but it inevitably shaves many many years (often decades) off their life

Very cool stuff...Thanks! Did you know that the Bible speaks of the importance of blood. 1) Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins. 2) Jesus Christ payed our sin debt by the shedding of his blood...He Died in our place...He was buried and rose again on the third day to everlasting life...THAT'S THE GOSPEL! Trust in Jesus today...Receive Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

My question is: Can you survive with only One-Third of the bacteria in your body? Considering they play an important role in digestion and various other things :3
@conman1395
@conman1395 7 жыл бұрын
No, most likely not. Working with only 1/3 of the flora in your GI system some would make you miserable and likely very malnourished due to the effect on your digestion. 1/3 of all the bacteria in your body will weaken the defense against bad bacteria. It will require your immune system to work harder and it'll probably lose the fight. Eventually the bad bacteria will take over.
@ozdergekko
@ozdergekko 7 жыл бұрын
plus it would leave your mucous membranes and your skin in general very susceptible to "evil" bacteria and fungi.
@thomasmajewski1562
@thomasmajewski1562 7 жыл бұрын
Most likely yes. If you have taken any oral anti-biotic for an infection you most likely have wiped out a large majority of bacteria in your gut before. Which will be replenished in a matter of days. It may effect your ability to break down digest some of the nutrients in your diet, but you can survive several weeks without eating. So the loss of nutrient intake over some days would be survivable.
@conman1395
@conman1395 7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Majewski that's correct, but I was speaking given that 1/3 of your bacteria stays at that level. Bacteria reproduce quickly enough that in reality you would survive. Your just be gassy.
@michaeldaugustine9249
@michaeldaugustine9249 7 жыл бұрын
You can survive with nearly no bacteria in your intestines for a short time. That's what happens when you take broad-spectrum antibiotics, and the main result is explosive diarrhea.. Losing the bacteria in your mouth will probably cause thrush (also a common side effect of antibiotics). And losing the bacteria on your skin will make you more susceptible to fungal infections and acne, but on the positive side it will also reduce your BO.

How would your body adapt to the loss of blood pressure due to loss of 2/3 of blood volume?
@feniovic
@feniovic 7 жыл бұрын
By reabsorbing water and electrolytes, basically. On long term, your body will continue to create as many red blood cells as he possibly can, even throwing immature forms to circulation, but on short term, kidneys work to mantein BP stable with wather, sodium and by vasoconstraction.

My body is super awful at keeping my blood where it belongs. I've got a very rare condition where my capillaries open up and let all the plasma and lighter fluids escape into the interstitial spaces in my body, all the while building up hemo-concentration in the circulation. I've just finished another stretch in the ICU. NOT FUN! Any thoughts Dr Dad? I can hook you up with some very good researchers at the NIH in Bethesda.

I woke up around 2am with my heart racing and body sweat. I got out of bed and collapsed three feet from my chair. I called 911 and they came within fifteen minutes while the 911 lady kept talking to me. At the ER they discovered I had almost no blood and they gave me 12 units of blood. The pain was incredible and while the doc was fitting an intravenous in my jugular I was asking for pain meds like the pain was so intense. The nurse said to hold on and try to be calm. I did my best and I guess they got the blood and meds in me. They flew me to a big city hospital where they finally discovered I had upper GI bleeding, internal bleeding. That was two months ago and I am still weak as a kitten.
