I love william james. He seemed like a really caring person. Like he didnt put scholarship above compassion in his work. I can appreciate that

1:15: Yes. And some projects took even longer. One advantage of my protraced state of academic unemployment is that I can advance research projects at their natural pace. But, mind you, that 12-year gestation period wasn't unusual for the period James lived in. Scholars were expected to produce magnum opera, and were allowed the time to do so.

Im not a intellectual, granted I can say that I have a 6th or 8th grade education level, giving the fact that they GAVE me my high school diploma. But I was fascinated by A.A. and the occultism whicb lead me to william james varieties of religious experience. I boùght thag book back in 2016 when I was sufferi g from mental distortions. Reading ut only "fortified" by psychotic beliefs. Now Im better. And after just reading that book wether or not I understood it truly, persisting through I can say that now I can somewhat grab the gist of the book and the way its written. And its like "wow, I was reading this book completely wrong" I thikk knce I finish the book, Ill tackle priciples of psychology to improve my mental health. Hopefully it does. Lol 😅

Henry gets all the attention from literary types, but William was a brilliant prose writer. For a sample, read his remarkable firsthand account of the San Francisco Earthquake.

His "Will To Believe" remains the go-to essay when struggling to believe in God. I'm sure it's free to read on the net should any such struggler still be out there.

1:09 to 1:18 Um, yes. [video paused] One challenging question took 13 years. Day and night awake and asleep. Another study took 25 years, but that had to do with ancient texts and profound spiritual matters... less about mortal interpersonal relationships. But once those were attained the net result was liberation of I'd estimate a gross 15% of functional brain processing capacity. Am not sure if people quite understand how fulfilling it is to have a mind that works like an indexed database and be all tied up in a data crunch then realize it is for all intents and purposes finally resolved. Going back to the video.

Its really sad that the "Principles of Psychology" isn't available in Turkish, my language, so does that mean the book isn't really considered seriously in modern psychology?
@socialneuro Жыл бұрын
Sadly, I think a lot of people have forgotten about the book, so it wouldn't surprise me that this it's no longer available in other languages. I think there is so much to learn from history!

@@socialneuroAnecdotal, but I remember talking to a psychology professor a few years ago who was listening to James' works on Audible. He said he was blown away by how well much of it had aged, at least in broad strokes, and lamented that scientists were "no longer allowed to be interesting".

Burada bir Türk'ü görmek güzel. Maalesef Türkçe bilerek entelektüel olarak gelişmen imkansız. Bu William James'in değil, Türkiye'nin bir sıkıntısı.
