I think that's part of the meme, they aren't bad or incompetent just bland and regarded as very uncool. I like a few of their songs including this one but despite owning some of their albums I could probably name only three songs.

They do have some really outstandingly terrible songs (Rockstar for example), but this one is actually pretty decent. I think part of the hate is because Chad Kroeger's voice is so irritating. This and Photograph aren't bad at all when covered well.

I think its based on 2 main factors. Meme wise "look at this photograph" just lends itself really well as a meme format. But the negativity around the band probably has to do with the fact that they got a ridiculous amount of airplay back in the day, but conversely you weren't very likely to find a lot of die hard nickleback fans. They were just kind of this alright band that no one really minded, but that got shoved down our throats 24/7 until eventually we were all sick of them. And unlike other bands from the era, like say Linkin Park, there didn't seem to be a lot of die hard fans to justify such heavy rotation on the radio and to kind of champion their cause. So I guess they just eventually became the perfect candidate for meme jokes.
