A guy working through mental health issues while doing something he's good at but also constantly thinking about wanting to do things that would allow him to be alone and not be as stressful. As someone who's on the autism spectrum and deals with social anxiety, I have a lot of respect for Zach. He's someone who succeded in life not only in spite of his mental health struggles, but because of his personality and quirks that others might find aloof or odd. He's someone who's completely and unapologetically himself. I hope when he retires he gets to play golf barefoot, and work as a garbage man, and whatever other "weird" desires he may have. And may his Hall of Fame speech consist of a single disinterested sentence, if he even shows up in the first place.

I played L.L. With a kid who was the best pitcher and player i ever seen. Yet he hated playing. He quit and tbh i can relate, but having that talent and quitting is kinda crazy. I felt kinda privileged to play with him, watching him warm up before a game and looking at every kid on the other team just looking at him. Probably thinking i gotta get in that box and hit off this kid.haha.

@teipeu9033

@@tellmewhenitsoverSome people find it easier to point and laugh than to feel empathy. And more people don’t really care about anyone’s mental health if there’s any sort of nuance to the symptoms. They’ll just take everything at face value. Suddenly, the enby with depression is lashing out because they have anger issues, not because they’ve spent the last 5 months in a pit of depression thinking about killing themselves and have no way to bent their emotions. The girl who zones out and lacks energy at work is clearly lazy, it’s not that she has undiagnosed autism and ADHD and is severely under-stimulated in a dead end job that she isn’t passionate about. The guy who sweats heavily in social situations doesn’t have severe social anxiety, he’s just smelly and doesn’t wash and everyone makes fun of him for it. The world is full of neurotypicals who have no idea what it’s like to be “wired differently” and think that depression is just sadness that can be cured by some time in the sun, drinking enough water and getting a good nights sleep. I’m so fucking tired of their bullshit. . . . Sorry to rant, I just needed to get it out of me.

He's a comparable hitter to Greinke...when he was at his best. A .225 BA in and of itself doesn't mean much. Does he get on base, hit for power...etc...? If it a Joey Gallo, elite CF defense, 40 HRs, .350 OBP .225 BA? Greinke was a good hitter...for a pitcher...when he was in his 20s. He’s definitely on the spectrum: -the social anxiety and depression -all those seemingly random, out of place, comments or blunt conversations (that AJ Ellis story is the most goddamn relatable thing lol) -the deer in the headlights look when being interviewed (he’s also having trouble keeping eye contact in these interviews, he needs to look away or up like he’s thinking of something because he’s so nervous) -he’s probably aloof and shy because he often doesn’t know what to say in social situations (look at him in that pre-Game 7 talk, he’s desperately trying to figure out what to say so he just mentions the seemingly obvious, and only gives a nervous smile when everyone starts laughing, which probably relaxes him a bit) -the extreme attention to detail and odd mannerisms (he gives a slight rock back before answering when asked about Game 7, probably an anxious tic often seen with autistic persons; also his pitching motion, of course) I love when he goes to sit in the empty stands, he’s probably feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated in the dugout and needs to go off and rest That also might explain why he didn’t like eating in the high school cafeteria, all those smells and sounds can be quite overwhelming to someone on the spectrum Addendum: It seems a lot of people have been offended by this post. Apparently, conjecturing that someone is on the autism spectrum is tantamount to insanity, Nazism, and several other forms of socially unacceptable behavior. May those with soft hearts and sound minds beware the comments below

@@bradenculver7457 I am a special ed teacher so I certainly have empathy (and it's rather rude of you to assume I do not - you don't know me) What I do know is that you can have all the empathy in the world for autistic people and still find dealing with them difficult. It takes a lot of patience and most MLB players aren't trained in working with such people. If they get exasperated and upset, that doesn't mean they are bad or uncaring or lack empathy.

Throwing his fastball and change the same relative speed makes complete sense, it's genius. If he threw his fastball 96 it would be easily distinguished from the change. These guys are used to heat, they aren't used to two pitches that look exactly the same spotted to perfection.

I watched Zach in high school. He was throwing his FB 90-93 against Timbercreek one night in Apopka in front of a dozen scouts. Kyle Israel was a big guy signed to play QB at UCF and played 1B for Timbercreek. When Kyle came up to bat Zach drilled him right in the middle of the back with 97. I guess because he felt like it.
