In January 2000, having survived Y2K, Afropop Worldwide's Banning Eyre met American music legend Howard Armstrong (1909-2003) in his apartment in Boston, where he was living at age 92 with his companion and fellow musician Barbara Ward. The goal was to tape an interview of Howard's remembrances of his Black string music heritage stretching back to his father's late 19th century youth. The talk went long, far more than could fit in the APWW episode The African American String Music Tradition, encored for Black History Month 2023.
This is an audio edit of their conversation that day.
