Because telecasts of all NFL games were blacked out in the cities where they were played, it's my understanding that all "NFL Monday Night Football" games involving either the New York Football Giants or the New York Jets were on the road until after the NFL amended the rule to allow sold-out home games to be locally televised in the cities they were played in. Otherwise, viewers in the huge New York TV market (then home to about seven percent of the nation's population) wouldn't get to watch their team play.
@ticketstohistory Жыл бұрын
That’s something! The NFL has definitely come a long way. If ANY game were blacked out these days with the gambling and fantasy football people would go insane lol
@altfactor Жыл бұрын
The NFL blackout rule was suspended for the 2020 season since due to the Covid-19 epidemic, stadiums had small crowds (or in some cases, no fans at all). The rule was done away with soon thereafter. Even when sold-out home games could be televised, there were times when a few hone games that didn't sell out would be locally televised, examples being games played in stormy weather conditions, and the "replacement games" during the 1982 players' strike. In the case of the former, the local team made the decision; in the case of the 1982 "replacement games", it was the league's decision, applying to all teams.
@notsosilentmajority1 Жыл бұрын
I believe they were only blacked out if the stadium didn't sell out. If the games were sold out the games were televised..... I think.?.? It's all in the book "This is Howard Cosell, and I'm Howard Cosell too." Howard sold crack from the booth years before crack hit the streets. There are MNF broadcasts where you can hear Howard drop the sports talk to sell product. "This'll knock your socks off. Quality. That's why it costs so much. C'mere. I'll give you a taste." Shocking but troo. Cosell moved more narcotics than anyone in sports broadcasting, at a time when sports broadcasters moved more product than anyone on the street. He's a legend.
