Widely regarded as one of the most important British painters of his time, Howard Hodgkin discusses his 'pictures of emotional situations' including Clean Sheets 1979-84. As well as explaining his resistance to discussing his subject matter, he explores how the pictures have personal meaning for him, and how they might affect those who see them.

Yes, I think the late work has a clarity only glimpsed in the earlier work...

Since 1980 (a late bloomer!!) Hodgkin has produced some truly incredible images. If I was him I would destroy everything he painted before 1975!!!! (as my other favourite Agnes Martin did to a lot of her pre-grid work - she only wished she had gotten ALL of it) What a wasteland and juvenilia Howard's early work is!!! Nothing prepares you for the mature stuff which is utterly sublime.

It doesn't appeal to your taste therefore it must be meaningless. Great reasoning!

Sir....oh....Sir....all of these (paintings) are hung backwards. The real work is on the other side. I don't see how you could have missed that. Strike one.

He's very stripped down. The art is that he made it out of nothing.

He is nothing special. I do the same and stick the boards in a pile . No my boards are not so bad.

Melissa Hodgkin's works are generally sloppy. At least for Rothko there is scale and depth in some of the paintings.
