Chadwick makes a great point, in my studies it was a rarity to study the works of African American, Caribbean and Caribbean American authors and poets unless it was on my own time and in my own personal exploration. The only book that had a Caribbean American on the cover was a book entitled 'The Cay' which represented a certain narrative of codependency, racism and dysfunction which I didn't subscribe to but we're obligated to read as per the curriculum. Who decided on that curriculum for middle school students?

Does this mean in practice, that while any other race of actor will be cast as a racially generic "best friend" on a sitcom, a Black actor will always be cast, and written for, as the "Black best friend", which to me sounds like "best friend who looks, talks, and affects a certain way AND who carries the weight of disseminating the Black Experience for the show."? To me this sounds both limiting and daunting.

I never really understood why Americans are so aware of their own color of skin and how much importance or impact it has everywhere. Culture, food, comedy, lifestyle, fashion, accent... these all seem to cluster around skin colors in US. Why is that? Is it the same in Europe? I can't imagine that the history of oppression, slavery and lack of civil & economic rights forced this to exist even now. There's got to be more to it.
@gabecruzin7 жыл бұрын
Because while slavery might be gone, the struggle against oppression and for civil & economic rights is not over in the US. Attempts to erase or push that culture, comedy, lifestyle, fashion, accent persisted after slavery and mutate into different forms against different minorities when they arrive in this country. It's a struggle that many would like to think is over and solved, but is far from either.
@StabilAmboss7 жыл бұрын
+Adrian Ventura - that's exactly what I said in my comment. They divide us. I don't know who "they" in your comment is but I think its democrats. Not that republicans are any better, they both suck. Our leadership is corrupt.
@darb.96267 жыл бұрын
U sound uninformed thus, I’ll try to answer that... skin color in this country caused slavery, inhumane treatment etc. and guess what, it still does. Racism is STILL alive and well. Where are you from?
@sonyapeach6 жыл бұрын
Rizwan Mashur ul Muttakin Well it did, also the fact that the oppression is not over it still exists. Slavery was never even actually outlawed. The 13th amendment just changed the requirements it stated if you break a law and are convicted it is then okay to enslave or enforce servitude from the decided amount of time. This is why the are so many ridiculous laws that were put in place which some still exist today. Also if you were lived in a mono racial country you never have to think about race. But it's not true that colorism doesn't exist in those societies. Darker skin is disliked around the majority of the world. Racism effect people everywhere in some way some places more than others. And yes Europe is the same even though they like to think they are not. France, England, Holland, Spain, and the Vatican still get the majority of their wealth from countries they have colonized or enslaved either currently or in the past.
