I am really impressed that Russell Crowe made a decision about LOTR just from picking up that he wasn't Peter Jackson's choice for the role. I think it probably still would have worked out well for the film and for these guys, but he just didn't want to do something that the people he would be working with weren't completely into...

Exactly. Most of these were roles that weren’t offered. Just actors asked to audition. Saying no to having interest or auditioning doesn’t mean you turned it down. It means you didn’t care to try for it.
