It's amazing how far science and engineering has come. Society at large would be nothing without agriculture, and agriculture would still be primitive without university-trained engineers...we're all in this together!

Thanks for this video. It was really nice and fun to see how a round baler is handled. Keep making videos like this, that show in detail how different machines are operated from inside the tractor.

Sure beats the early 80's Ford 552 baler I've got... Grandpa bought it new in 82 and we're still running it. We were one of the first in our area to switch from small square bales to big round bales back then, because the fire ants were SO bad you'd have them up to your elbows by the time you grabbed a bale off the ground and set it up on the trailer... That, and hiring guys to help pick up bales off the field and stack in the barn was getting hard to find even back then, and would be darn near impossibly nowdays I'd suppose. The old 552 baler is Ford blue but built by Gehl. (Most Ford machinery was built by someone else back in the day). It's a 5 foot wide by 6.5 foot baler, but they're nowhere near as tight a bale as modern balers. There's six belts across the chamber, but they're space out about 4 inches apart-- you have to look between the belts to see the shape of the bale as you're baling it. Monitors weren't even invented when that baler was built. You just look into the chamber and see which side of the bale is lower, and feed hay to that side. Netwrap wasn't invented back then, either, and so of course it's a twine only baler. They hadn't even invented autowrap back then, so you have to put the twine on the bale by moving the twine cylinder with the second SCV valve. Only one twine tube so it takes awhile to tie the bale and get it ready to eject. Bale kickers hadn't been invented yet, either, so you have to back up between each bale to unload just like you're doing, and pull forward to close the gate. No declutches either for ejecting the bale, so you have to shut the PTO off after wrapping while opening the gate to kick the bale out, then turn the PTO back on to start baling again. Technology has come a long way, and netwrap, bale kickers, declutchers on the baler, etc. have really sped things up, and monitors make baling much easier... BUT, on the other hand, I don't have to fight problems with netwrap feeders or cutters not working, monitor electrical problems or gremlins stopping baling til they're fixed, etc. So long as I keep her greased and twine in the box she's baling, pretty much... Later! OL J R :)

Jaxson Eischeid brother hits C3 or faster. Don’t really have to worry when you have a great field that makes 2.5 bales an acre max. More have to worry about the gopher and coyote holes.

Nice video Travis. I knew that Ryan wasn't the only guy on the farm who could make a video! :) One question? Why don't you just dump the bail without backing up. It would seem to be a smoother operation if you didn't backup. Someone help me with this in case Travis doesn't have a response. Thanks.

So you can pull ahead to drop the gate and not hit the bale. If you just stayed in place you would end up hitting the bale or missing some hay

jbmbanter If they used a bale kicker they wouldn't need to back up. It scoots the bale back about 10-15ft so you can close the gate.

Brody and James both are good explanations on the operation of a baler. Most of the farming that I know about is row crops, mainly corn, peanuts and cotton. Here in East Central Georgia close to Augusta those are the major crops for farmers. Most farmers opt out of winter planting to ensure that when everything is good they can plant the summer row crops. A few of the farmers plant wheat but they sometimes have trouble getting the wheat out of the field because of soil moisture and getting stuck. It's amazing how the Lord dictates what happens in many cases on the farm. :)
