its nice when you show the "artisan level" details that go into actual "old school" machining. this is some very VERY intricate and highly accurate work all done without the use of master-cam, cnc,tin coated application specific inserts and all the modern conveniences.the user shaped and ground high speed steel cutting bits are awe inspiring when you realize all these radii are hand ground onto the tool then machined onto the part. this goes way beyond "running a lathe" Ive been in the cnc lathe and mill machining field for 35+ years and this was brilliant.

Good work, considering the small Myford's performance envelope! I must admit, though, that the tool chatter had me talking back to my monitor to, "Please, in the name of all that is holy, slow it down and increase the feed!". I see some discussion regarding the "elimination" of the harmonic balancer, and would like to address it. "Harmonic balancer" is a bit of a misnomer. It is actually a harmonic dampener meant to smooth out the abrupt rotational speed changes inherent to infernal combustion engines, lessening crankshaft "whip" and minimizing transference to belt-driven accessories. On seeing this second set of comments, (last episode too) I went back in the video and looked at the new crankshaft pulley as best I could. This left me suspicious that it may, indeed, be a two-piece affair with rubber bonded between. Has BOM found a machine-to-fit, toothed belt, harmonic dampener pulley? Are they drinking tea and giggling as we debate?

@mikejensen-fogt46626 жыл бұрын
love seeing stuff like this being made, especially for such a cool project! but I will recommend you turn at a lower rpm and take bigger depths of cut at a higher feed rate. the bigger diameter of part your turning, the higher the cutting speed your tool will see at the tip. lower the rpm and it will take away the chatter / squealing noise, then you can take bigger depths of cut and use higher feed rates that will remove metal faster than what you where doing. I found for high speed steel tooling ( HSS ) a cutting speed of 100 FPM on steel and 400fpm on aluminum works good for me. to figure out your rpm, take your cutting speed and times it by 4, then divide it by your diameter of your part. for a 3 inch aluminum part the equation would be: 400x4=1600/3= 533 rpm a 4.5 inch steel piece would be 100x4=400/4.5=89rpm a feed rate of .005" per rev for a finishing pass and between .010 and .020 for roughing passes works a treat on my lathe around the same size, maybe a big bigger... depth of cut will depend on your machine and work piece. play it by ear lol... hope this helps. love the vids, keep them coming.

To everyone that said the pulley wouldn’t work because it’s not a harmonic balancer, go look at 9:25 of the video. I think they used a harmonic balancer to make the pulley. Nice job! Keep them coming!

Love the machining and out of the box thinking.. but i think it might be a bad idea removing the harmonic balancer on the engine and replacing it with a solid pulley..
@andypughtube6 жыл бұрын
I, too, noticed the rubber layer on the pulley, butI am not sure that was a harmonic balancer. It might just have been an NVH thing. As far as I recall it is only 6-cylinder engines that need a harmonic balancer.

all engines have harmonic balancers, 4sylinder engines too. its not uncommon for engines that have had the harmonic balancer removed to suffer catastrophic failures, shattered oilpump gears etc. If anything you would want to upgrade to a better than stock harmonic balancer, but absolutly not remove it.
@jarekpszuk69446 жыл бұрын
@@hfracing oh, I goofed up, I thought you meant the additional shaft with counterweights on it that's common for v6s but not present in other engines. I don't think I knew about harmonic balancer until now. You learn something new every day huh?
@andypughtube6 жыл бұрын
@@hfracing It's not true that _all_ engines have harmonic balancers. None of my motorcycles have one, and neither does the 1916 Dennis I work on. And I don't think that the rubber layer in that front pulley was _necessarily_ balancer. Quite often features like that are for purely acoustic purposes, for example to prevent combustion noise radiating from the pulley. Dear Chaps, One must suppose that your Myford can only run at one speed, otherwise you would be running it at a greatly reduced number of revolutions per minute when you use your your cut off tool to sever a length of round stock in the lathe. As an aside, I find it most relaxingly enjoyable to view the cinematographical productions that you so kindly post on the You Tube from time to time. I do relish the application of Dry Wit in your pieces and find it most enlightening to know that there are still a few refreshingly intelligent individuals who do not see it necessary to fill their video submissions to the You Tube Community with annoyingly loud, odious and repetitious headbanging noise, designed for the enjoyment of thumbsuckers and others whose ear to ear electrical impedance is less than .00001 ohms. I do hope that you finish building your motor vehicle but as someone once said: "It is not necessarily the destination that is important. Sometimes it is the journey." Kind Regards from The Antipodes
