We look at an 8 year old tree net (I didn't build it!) that is deteriorating and strangling a tree and try to do some repairs with paracord. The best price we found on paracord has been at amzn.to/3cM1Oas. Please stay clipped in while working in a tree. Please only build these in healthy trees on your property. Please don't be an idiot and get hurt. With @Charlies_web and @SagleySight

This tree has been around forever. Back in the day me and my stoner friends would go to home depot and "match" on rope to add bits on here and there. Back then we got the rope that was available at the local home depot witch worked well but defiantly got warn out over time. Since then I come back to the spot every couple of years to reinforce the ropes. Many pieces of the original ropes are still woven into it to give it that nice sketchy look

This net was built before we knew anything About parachord. Even tho there trashy looking after old age there actually still pretty strong. I like to leave the old rope just to show how old the net is.

Whoa, sweet baby jesus. I definitely prefer sky nets. Or maybe a tree net that is more planned and maintained. 33m up in the air without a clipped in harness, crazy. But as I know you are living, so all went out well.

Girth hitching is not necessarily bad for the tree, if there is enough slack for it to expand it won't bulge like that. I realize that's not always possible to do. We do the same thing with crane slings in adventure parks. One thing to keep in mind is that thin ropes are harmful to the tree because they restrict water and nutrient flow by damaging the cambium. This is well accepted by hammockers, it should be for treenetters too. And I just want to say, there is no way I would climb that sketchy net without a rope. This is coming from someone who spends a lot of time high up in trees on and off the job...

curios, have you gone back and witnessed any tree growth over and around the ropes with your method? I work in the adventure park industry and we occasionally make tree courses, but everything we do is much higher tension (and wire rope). so we either use wood blocks to hold the cable off the tree, or through-bolt it. any cable touching the tree will choke it at those points. I'm wondering if over time this low but somewhat taught tension you use will do the same, choking the half of the tree it sits on.

Honestly it hasn't been that long since I started doing it that way so I haven't seen much growth but I assume even if it did wear a spot you could still slide it around to a different spot. Also there are alot of different tree protection methods like running the resting lines through rubber hose to create separation.
@raphaelbeinhauer9242

I work in the same industry. We use crane slings around the trees, backed up by cable because slings are not certified for life support. The slings don't really choke the trees, depending on species it will take a couple of years to start a bulge. The key is having enough slack in the steel cables, and the sling being long enough. I will say that that is the best case scenario for the tree, in reality the cables are often rigged tightly, using the shortest sling possible. It's definitely something that requires regular maintenance if done properly. We also use wooden blocks to keep our backups away from the tree, same for platforms.

Think of it like bedsores on a coma patient. The tree can't move itself, and given enough time very little pressure cuts off circulation (or wears, or messes with transpiration). I defer to these guys who do these kinds of massive semi-permanent installations, but I'd say keep it wide without fail, and keep it moving regularly if possible.

Looks like a Eucalyptus globulus (Tasmanian Blue Gum). They can grow to 100m if left alone to do their thing. But maybe it's in their best interest to kill it because it's a weed species in California.

@@charlieswebs4734 Truth hurts. You guys clearly understand rope and climbing, etc., But not trees. None of these ropes have any business touching a tree under even slight tension, paracord worst of all!. Sure, those wide loops with half contact won't fully girdle and kill a branch/trunk, but they absolutely will strangle the far side and weaken it. You have to appreciate how slow the growth is happening. It's like water cutting rock, it doesn't take much over time! Wide webbing is where it's at. Hell, that garden hose was the most responsible thing up there as far as the tree is concerned! 😅 Costs too much? Tough shit, don't needlessly kill trees for your entertainment.
