One of the best tutorials I have found. I am a broadcast meteorologist and I work from home. My air conditioner is close to my work station and makes a lot of white noise in the audio. This eliminated it completely without distorting the feed. Thank you.

I converted a cassette tape of an oral history interview to a digital sound file. Had the awful tape hiss throughout but could still hear the voices. I used your tutorial and I'm amazed at the result. The voices are crystal clear - tape hiss gone. Thank you Daniel.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! I’m a DJ for an internet radio station and I am given the opportunity to do “over-the-phone” interviews with many Mainstream Recording Artists from time to time. I love using Sony Sound Forge (Version 10). My biggest issue is with the noise (like air movement) that is picked up and heard on playback just as you have demonstrated. I strive for the best quality possible, especially when these Artists plan on sharing the recorded interview to their websites for their followers to hear in regards to a new Single or an Album Release. I do everything from taking our landline phone out of the room, turning off the ceiling fan, getting my Bulldog out of the room due to her snoring, you name it. But I still wind up with that surrounding noise that my mic seems to pick up. I’ve even tried muting the mic channel between questions but that can be a pain during an interview. These Artists are on a professional level. I strive to be as progressional when it comes to recording these interviews and I spend many hours editing out that dead air that’s heard between questions and answers and have always been a concerned about hearing it in the finished product. I’m hoping that this NR feature is available on SF Version 10. I will definitely use this feature, not only for the interview that I am currently editing but I may go back to my archived interviews to copy and apply this to those as well ! Thank you, again for posting this tutorial! I’ve tried several times to reach out to Sony to speak with a “live” Tech for help, along with a few other recording concerns but have been unsuccessful. I’m now subscribing to your page for additional tutorials in hopes to answer many Sony Sound Forge questions !

Thanks a lot for your tutorial. I really needed to know haow to use it. I keep erasing manually all silences in my recordings after each word. That's really helpfull thanks. For those who say the have beeps or don't have the noise reduction tool in Sound Forge: You guys have to download the Noise Reduction Pluggin!!!.
@TheDanielDoyle9 жыл бұрын
Marta Manhattan I'm glad it helped you Marta. Mastering the Noise Gate is great for erasing the silences between words. Be careful to allow a sufficient release time so your syllables are not clipped.
You can just drag a selection on to the workspace to create a copy. It will retain the format. Be careful with creation of the noiseprint, see that the 250 ms is representative of the constant background noise, and don't contain random sounds like breath. The noiseprint should be tweaked in your example. I can hear a booming at 120 Hz after every phrase, which I was able to notch out with an equalizer. Maybe points on the noiseprint could be raised around that range. Increase the FFT size to 4096 for greater frequency resolution in the bass. Your settings of reduction and release are strong, and will produce MP3-like spiky, tonal character to breath or sss, referred to as "musical noise" or "birdies"... Normal reduction amount is between 12 and 20 dB.

Hey man when capturing a noise print aren't you supposed to select an area of the recording only containing noise? The speech being considered as part of the noise print is going to have adverse effects on the algorithm since you don't want to take away from the vocals.

Hello Daniel...you're awesome! This video was very helpful! QUESTION: I have no idea what I've done, but when I hit a long sustained note, it cuts off at about 1 second down to zero volume and almost sounds like a dissolving radio frequency sound when it cuts off ... I have Sony Sound Forge 7 and used it a lot back in the day. I lost it somewhere and just recently found it going through some old stuff. I’m used to it and like it for my uses but there is no support for saving files as AAC or M4A. Do you happen to know where I can get a plug-in or something to be able to use these file formats in SSF7 as I don’t want to pay for something that’s over my head in what I use it for and would prefer to not have to learn an entirely new prose of software.

Hello Daniel, your video is very helpful. But these features are available only in paid version of Sound Forge. Noise reduction option is not available on Sound Forge trial version. The Noise Gate is also not as good as with background noise reduction technique in Audacity or Premier Pro. Third, background dogs barking don't go away by this technique, it only reduces room noise. This can work only if you modulate your voice and speak without any change in frequency. If your P2C or commentary requires laughing or any change in voice Sound Forge will make it look amateurish. But these problems are with Sound Forge, not with your tutorial. Thanks!

Hi Kitaara3, unfortunately not much can be done with wind noise. Noise reduction can only take you so far. I can only recommend a good wind shield. It looks like a really funky Mogwai from the Gremlins.

I think the earliest Sound Forge with NR built in was 9.0. You can purchase Sony Noise Reduction 2.0 on the Sony Creative Software website, but it's pricey (about $280) It would be cheaper for you to upgrade to Sound Forge 11 which includes it. The Sony NR has been really useful when converting old noisy analog tapes to digital, but you have to be careful with the amount you use. Listen carefully to this video and you'll notice a slight "phasiness" on the track after the noise reduction. That can be a real problem when using too much. I use it in conjunction with my own NR that I came up with and I can reduce noise by as much as 40db...something the Sony alone might have a problem achieving because of its artifacts.
