Over the course of a decade, Rory Stewart went from being a political outsider to standing for prime minister - before being sacked from a Conservative Party that he had come to barely recognise.
Uncompromising, honest and darkly humorous, this is his story of the challenges, absurdities and realities of political life. Instantly praised as a new classic, it is an astonishing portrait of our turbulent times.

Has anyone else ever seen a politician who is so frank about what politics is like? I am an American. I have never heard someone who has explained publicly what being a politician is like.

Rory, failure not to succumb to the temptation of becoming what you were is not, is your greatest success. Although you may appear to be lost to the British politics, you never lost yourself! Many politicians haven’t even got the self to lose.

Oh dear. 'lurched' and 'populism.' I recommend the Oxford Union debate with Winston Marshall and Nancy Pelosi on the topic of populism. Pelosi revealed the 'liberal' mindset. What 2016 on laid bare was the disparity between the values of the ordinary people of a country and their supposed 'representatives' and a project which is profoundly undemocratic.

@TheBlazingRedcoat.. You scare me ! You are absolutely typical of the impressionable voters who are still looking for heroes - people who will do their thinking for them. Think Boris Johnson, Margaret Thatcher - natural dictators both. This shows a decline in our faith in democracy - an achievement for which people gave their lives. In principle Rory Stewart is no different from the others. The Party that was always going to crash Britain in the interest of their tribe. He belongs to the tribe (and they will rally behind him) A man of conscience would have rebelled much earlier. His latest move looks just like old-fashioned opportunism. The Tories are f****d. . The field is wide open - so in he comes. His first task ? Attack Labour from a new and privileged position. The Media love it: they sense a new star. Tory voters are just an audience, ,waiting for a sparkling novelty act.

I think the interviewee could have added something about how creepiness and dishonesty are related to vocal tone. It sounds like he wanted to say something about political speech and the air in a room.

@@noneofyourbizness There was NO hint of confession here. This was just “No Gov - straight up ! It wasn’t me. I wasn’t even there. I was with my Nan in A&E. I can bring a note….” Rory’s note would be worth looking at. Shall we ever see it ?

The depressing state of affairs in parliament Rory describes stems directly from FPTP. The dynamic that prevails is the Westminster political class dancing to the tune of the madcap in every respect FPTP system. Without moving to proper PR nothing much is likely to change.

How true! In this election Labour could get 38% of the vote and a 200 seat majority. This winner takes all system is not democracy but domination for 5 long years. It encourages soft corruption, arrogance and an our way or the highway attitude.
