That's how I end up in the situation where I'm trying to figure out how my phone's web browser went from having 3 tabs open to remind me of stuff to having 17 tabs open in the span of twelve hours. When I see something intriguing, I either ask an ai or I pop open a tab to look at later (which is usually never). So many exciting little rabbit trails, so little time!

Ooh, I do that too! And I get overwhelmed by my work inbox being full so I have some subfolders under my inbox as well. So, for anything that's more of a general office notice I have "rules" set up that those will automatically be filed into a subfolder if they have certain subject lines/senders/etc. (because let's be honest, I'm not gonna read those general emails anyway). That way I don't have many emails in my inbox! Way easier to find things. 😅

My favorite "deliberately putting something somewhere and forgetting" moment for me was in college. Friend and I rented a locker at the gym, but the locks have to come off for summer break. Come Fall, I'm searching everywhere for the lock. To the point I just go buy a new one. I get to the gym, get ready, and go to put on my gym shoes, when out falls the lock from the year before. I had put it in my gym shoe because those were guaranteed to come to the gym with me 🤦‍♀️

I have made peace with my difficulty remembering names. Now, at the end of a conversation I take a second to check in with myself asking if I remember their name, and if not, do I need to. Only if I really need to do I ask again, at which time I will repeat it back to them and try to come up with some way of making me remember it, like, say if a childhood friend had the same name or whatever. Even then, I might forget their name before I get a chance to record it so I don't put that pressure on myself unless I really need to.

10:59 I've seen this meme before, and it's SO TRUE. I hired a professional organizer who specializes in ADHD a couple of years ago, and the first five minutes of the appointment sum up my ability to keep track of things perfectly. She suggested we start by organizing my school stuff, and I spent a solid two minutes looking around my 300 square foot studio apartment for my bright blue school backpack. 😂 The biggest piece of advice she gave me during that session was to assign something a place in the location where you use it. Even implementing that one bit of advice has made my life so much easier.

I have to put things like car keys away before I step off the door mat, if I get further into the house the thought of having to do it is gone and they are lost. So where storage for certain things is located is critical. Must be at point of use/need in many cases. Every time I break this rule I get in a mess.
@TheFeldhamster
@TheFeldhamster 6 ай бұрын
@@dees3179I hear this "searching for the keys" thing from so many Americans (regardless of their neurotype) and I can't help wondering why. Don't you have a little shelf / table / sideboard thingy right by your door? Where I live, that's the culture in every house - some sort of landing area directly by the door where you immediately drop the keys and your wallet and probably your gloves in winter. And where you put stuff you don't want to forget when you go out, like, idk, grocery coupons or your water bottle. So you see them when you take your keys. I couldn't live without something like that, we actually have quite a big side table for this. Yeah sure, it makes our entrance hall look a bit cluttered but that's a small price to pay for always knowing where stuff is when you're in a hurry to get going. Can recommended 100%.

3:17 I hate this aspect of ADHD. The entirety of my working memory is consumed with making absolutely sure I DON'T FORGET THE THING, and so nothing gets done because I can't spare the brain energy. This was particularly bad when my work schedule was 5-6 days a week, because it essentially meant that a) I couldn't do anything before work because I couldn't risk missing my work shift, and b) I'd spend so much mental energy at work masking and making up for my neurodivergence that I had none left do do anything useful after work. So essentially, only the "emergencies" (no clean clothes! no clean dishes! bills are due TODAY!) got done, and literally nothing else. I was living in a state of constant burnout, simply because I had to go to work every day. I recently was able to change my schedule to 3-4 longer shifts a week, so I get several days off now, which has helped somewhat. But it's still a significant challenge on the days I go to work. 7:02 This drives me crazy, too. The fact that I can forget what I'm doing WHILE I'm doing it just boggles my brain. It boggles the brains of other people, too. We can be having a conversation, and sometimes I'll get interrupted, and someone will notice and ask what I was about to say. I just have to tell them, "Sorry, I've had like 20 thoughts since then, and I have literally no idea."

Laundry is a good candidate for gamifying. Make a timer on your phone for how long it takes to do a laundry cycle and challenge yourself to get as much done in one afternoon as you can, fitting naps, small responsibilities, and fun activities between them. And today we have two live examples of distraction rabbit holes.... = D ...Best advice I've learned for not losing things is "Don't pick a home for it, but to ask yourself where you'd look for it" the first requires you to remember something for that one thing, the latter lets you rely on the search strategy you already have and forget the thing. (With many thanks to fellow ADHDer Adam Savage)

Where is the thing? Adam Savage talks a bit about his shop layout philosophy that he calls "First Order of Retrievability". One of the parts of that I have been using myself, whether in the office, shop, or around the house is when looking for "The Thing" keep note of the first place you look for it. When you eventually find (or replace) "The Thing", put it where you first looked for it. There was a reason you looked in that first place, and very likely it will be the first place you go to when you need it again.

Ok, I actually relate to the second last one, a lot Like, last week. I wanted to return some books I borrowed for the library. And Ok, first. I keep my library books, in two bags. One for "haven't read/finished", and one for "have read" And I usually keep both, near my bed. But for some reason, I put my "have read" bag, near my door Ok. So! I was going to the library, planning to return some books, and spend the afternoon there. For some reason, I forgot to put my binder on. So I went back to grab it, then went back to walking to the bus stop... Only to realize. I forgot my library books Why? Because I moved then from their spot. And even though I was constantly looking at them in their new spot, before I left. I forgot them

When I used to live at home (61 now, moved out at 17), I would do laundry while watching t.v. Back then, most programs were about half an hour, which is also how long a wash takes, SO, I would start a load, watch a show, run down, transfer into dryer, and start another load. Due to commercials I seldom missed shows ! Lol ! When clothes were dry I would bring them up to the living room and fold them as I was watching t.v.

Missing space in my apartment for a washing machine helpes me with the drying and folding. If I have to go to the salon anyway, I can stay there a little longer. Also, I don't want to drag the wet clothes home. And while I'm at it, I can fold them afterwars. Which might be, because I don't want to be shamed for not folding them by the other strangers there. So... Thanks, social anxiety?

Speaking of, I can remember the strangest, most random stuff from aeons ago. Like this one memory of my granpa pulling me along the beach in a red Ryder wagon. He died when I was six, so I couldn't have been any older than 4 at the time. Probably younger, tbh.

A thought/feeling will make sense so well in my head and when i go ahead and try to express it, im completely lost with words and how to put it together so that someone can understand me. AND MOST OF THE TIME, ITS A VERY COMMON THOUGHT/FEELING.

For me nothing, especially keys, has just one place to be. This allows my brain to have flexibility it craves and not the rigidness that it will destroy. You know the "This is the only way to do blah blah blah" that is so soul destroying when it doesn't work for you. That is me and "Everything has it's one place to be and you must put it back after you finish using it" rule which has never worked for more than 5 seconds with me before I have forgotten the solitary place something was meant to be because it no longer made sense for it to belong there. For example I often have 4 places that keys can be - In my pocket, on the table in the hall way (by the door), beside my computer (I'm in IT) or on my bedside table. This means I only have a small number of places to check before going into full panic mode thinking my keys have been left on a train or bus and then finding them on a different table that is on the way from the front door to the bathroom. :)

What trips me up about many chores is if it's a big chore, like cleaning an overflowing sink. I need to empty the sink in order to make use of the sink to clean the dishes, so the counters need cleaning and the trash bin needs emptying, and so many steps just to get TO the dishes. Nothing is particularly enjoyable, lots of repetitive movements that don't play nice with arthritis, why do The Big Chore when I could be doing anything else?
