"It's an accommodation." Thank you for saying those words out loud. Many of us have a hard time using things that make our lives easier, because somehow they're "unnecessary" ("can't you *technically* go without it?"), therefore buying it is "wasteful" and using it is "lazy." "This thing makes my life easier" is easy to dismiss. "This is an accommodation" more directly addresses the importance somehow.

My oldest adult son has ADHD and even he asks me why I have to set a timer when I boil noodles, or ANY TIME I turn on the stove. Because I don't want to burn the house down, that's why. Can't I just stay in the kitchen for 3 minutes? NO I CANNOT. I don't quite understand why people think I should stop "depending on" these simple things that help me, that don't hurt anybody but that *they* dont need or feel is necessary. Even when I try to make my life a bit easier, people think I should "try harder" 🤔 even some who know better.

I saw your Ted talk a couple of years ago. I felt really sad for you and how horrible it must be to have ADHD. I then started watching more of your content and it dawned on me that you were in fact describing my life. After procrastinating for at least a year and a half, I finally saw a psychiatrist yesterday. I have a diagnosis. I'm so sad I never got the support I so needed as a kid. But without you I would have spent the rest of my life thinking I was just naturally careless, spacey and incompetent, despite trying so incredibly hard to the point of burnout to do better. I didn't think I had a problem, I thought I WAS the problem. Thank you so much for what you do.

Same. I was diagnosed one year ago, at 46. The past year has been the most amazing journey of learning to truly love and appreciate myself (versus always beating myself up) and how to work smarter with my ADHD brain instead of constantly trying to fight my natural rhythms. The result has been my happiest self, my already successful career suddenly taking off like a rocket, and becoming a better mom, wife, daughter, sister, employer, friend, etc. ❤ Your best life is ahead! 🎉

I really like how you touched on how disposable dishes and cutlery can be a big quality of life issue for those of us with ADHD. My home office is attached to my garage and I've set up a little alcove as a kitchenette so that I don't have to keep going in and out of the house all the time when I want to grab a drink or a quick bite while I'm working. I used to keep plastic dishes in there that I'd have to take back into the house to wash, but they'd inevitably end up as piles of dirty dishes in my office. Having something that I can just toss without having to remember to bring it back into the house has been a game changer in helping to reduce the clutter around me while I work.

For anyone who struggles with dishes and has little space. A countertop dishwasher on a cart saved me in my last tiny kitchen. I still used disposable plates and stuff but it helped cut back on the number of cups and silverware I was purchasing. I could fill it from a (clean) bucket and it would drain into a bucket so it didn’t *have* to sit by my sink or a drain. I also put a camping sink in the sink for dirty dishes and would move them out of the sink when I needed the sink empty and free of dishes and it also worked to carry the dishes over to the small dishwasher. I picked one with a clear front so I could watch the dishes being washed too. It was quite soothing. No judgement on using disposables because I totally used those too! It was definitely a combination of what my budget would allow.

We purchased a counter top dishwasher many years ago because the apartment does not have a dishwasher installed. we were later told by management that we could not use the dishwasher because it uses up too much water. So we have gone back to doing dishes in the sink. The dishwasher now just sits there taking up bench space... FYI if you live in an apt bldg

The pile of clothes and saying you should put a laundry basket there makes me think of a school of user-focused design that looks at the ways people interact with a system, and then builds those natural patterns into the design. I think it’s sometimes called “paving the desire paths”, which are the bits of trampled ground where people have made their own path in the absence of formal walkways.

I love the new space! If I may give you one tiny recommendation though: set your desk to be lower for working so it's more ergonomic. Your elbows should be at a 90° angle and rather close to your body 🙂This goes for both the standing & sitting height.
@moongirl8807
@moongirl8807 Жыл бұрын
I just can't imagine this, can you elaborate on this? Like between what should be a 90° angle, body and elbow or elbow and desk or just the angle your arm is bend?
@charitykennedy4020

I second this. I noticed that right away when I saw her at her desk. Sitting desk height is too high and will cause aches/pains/potential musculoskeletal issues over time.
@charitykennedy4020
@charitykennedy4020 Жыл бұрын
@moon girl: The elbows should be bent at 90 degrees, not splaying out to the side from the body. This allows the wrists to be in a neutral position. It will help prevent issues like carpal tunnel from developing. Google ergonomic desk setup for more info. There are great graphics to clarify this.

Putting dog stuff under something so you don't trip is a whole mood, I also have a small dog and it's useful sometimes! But I also have to be careful to have things that I regularly pick up easily accessible (without a thing above I can hit my head off when bending down), so for example his water bowl is actually not under anything, but just beside a door where I noticed I never step, that's been working out great! Except I regularly throw toys into it accidentally.... while attempting to throw them through the doorway...

Thank you so much for showing us your single use dishes and calling it an accommodation!! I've been feeling guilty lately for using single use plates, cups, and cutlery during the last few months living in the place I'm about to move out of. The place does not have a dishwasher (one of the reasons I'm moving out - I really thought I could handle the absence of a dishwasher when the rest of the house was so nice), and after a few months of living there, I gave up trying to stay on top of dishwashing. When my friends came over for sleep-over, I told them I had one very strict rule in the house: If they used it, they washed it, meaning I understood completely if they wanted to not use the single use dishes, but they would have to do wash it themselves if they chose the regular ones. Sorry for long post, I just wanted to say thank you. It means a lot that you show us these things, and tell us it's OK to make adjustments to "normal" when we need to. I don't have ADHD, btw, not on the paper, anyway, but your videos are crazy helpful to me. Thank you so so much!!

This is a repost of a comment I made on a previous video. You bringing up the Stream Deck made me want to post it here as well. When the pandemic hit and I wasn't able to be as social, I had a lot more free time on my hands. Due to this, I used the money that I would normally spend while being social (going to the movies, out to dinner, etc) and that free time to set my apartment up with smart devices. Over the course of about 2.5 years, my apartment is mostly run by smart technology (mainly light bulbs/switches, a smart lock for my front door, among a few other handy devices). I also have an Alexa to help control these devices and I use it to help me with notifications, set reminders to switch my laundry over, have my shopping list on my Alexa app, among other things. In the morning, I just say "Alexa, good morning" and it tells me the date, weather, my schedule for the day and schedule for the next day (appointments and the such). I have it connected to my online calendar which I keep on my phone. I made it a habit so that when I get an appointment made for something, I immediately add it to my calendar. Having routines set up on my Alexa to turn off my lights and lock my front door before bed by just saying "Alexa, time for bed" is very helpful for the anxieties that come with my ADHD. I know not everyone can afford to switch over to smart devices overnight, but I promise you, it is worth it if you have the means to do so. There are some great KZbin channels out there to help you get started; one of my favourites being Smart Home Solver. It became a fun project and as I got more of my apartment converted to being "smart", I felt my days get more productive and my anxiety levels went down quite a lot. It isn't a perfect solution though. I still have a pencil & notepad that I keep on my office desk for writing a to-do list (clean the kitchen, brush teeth, put out the trash, etc). I add to it over the course of the week, and I just read through it a few times a day, prioritizing the things that I need to get done first; health, personal hygiene, and daily chores such as laundry, dishes & vacuuming. Once I do those priority ones, I aim to knock 1-3 other things off of the list each day. There are some days when the list will fill up faster than it goes down and there are some days I am able to clear it off completely. But hey, that's ADHD for ya.

We have a tendency to take socks off at the end of the day, and always have trouble putting dirty kitchen towels in laundry baskets. We now have a kitchen/living room laundry basket and it's been sooooo helpful. Instead of having to remember to move that dirty laundry to the bedroom (further away), when tidying up one of the rooms, we can just.. toss the socks or towels into a nearby laundry basket! (The kitchen opens right off of the living room). It also keeps us from having random towels and stuff thrown down the basement stairs to where the washer/dryer are. We are looking into maybe moving the washer/dryer upstairs in the future but for now this helps us SO much! My partner also has ADHD, but he is a clutter has to be out person where I'm a clutter has to be hidden and I will have a complete inventory of each box in my head person, so we are trying to figure out how to work together with those things!

So looking at how you organized things it reminds me of the work I do. Lean engineering/ continuous improvement. It genuinely helps me organize my own space and for anyone who wants a crash course I highly recommend looking up a thing called 5S Sort, set in order, shine, standardize and sustain.

Congratulations for your new Space and thank you for your videos. It helped me a lot to accept myself (it is more difficult to practice your tips but you know step by step) ; and it help me to search to be diagnosed. At 30 nearly 31 I am currently seeing a psychiatrist specialised in adult adhd diagnostic. I had 2 appointements, I managed to find my scholar reviews. He think that yes adhd could clearly explained my difficulties. And next appointements I will pass the diva 2.0 test and we will see what treatments and accommodation will be needed depending on the results. So thank you a lot for your work, you are doing a Great job. I have recommend you channel to a lot of people. Thank you and congrats ❤️

7:49 I bought a stream deck years ago and it was SO useful I bought another one! I now have the first one doing all the useful computer stuff you have and the 2nd one (on the same desk) hooked up to a smart home hub (home assistant), so I can use it to turn on the office lights, change the AC profile (or turn it on/off), set myself into DND mode so my wife knows I'm in a meeting (or need to focus), it's probably one of the most useful bit of tech I've bought recently.

Deeeefinitely love my Stream Deck for holding little macros and functions that make launching things easier, especially when I have to do certain repetitive tasks. It's such an underappreciated kind of device

I love your channel SO much. I am an adult with ADHD, and I greatly appreciate the visibility and tips. I don't know if you will ever see this comment, but I feel like in your videos you always seem super high functioning. Like you've magically defeated the ADHD monster with so many tips and tricks. I know it's not true and that we only see people at their best, but I would really appreciate a video about getting back on track after executive dysfunction takes over. Thank you so much!!

Adam Savage gives a great tip for storing stuff in a way you will find them later: If you have to put something away, imagine yourself in the opposite situation, as if you didn't have it and was looking for it. What is the first place you though to look? Put it there with no second though.

Thanks for all the great content you provide. You were a big part of my journey in learning I have ADHD, and your videos really helped me implement healthier coping mechanisms, and day-to-day processes while I explored the possibility (and had the lightbulb moment of 100% clarity) of having ADHD... well, whatever suggestions I could retain 🙈 Not only that, but the content is interesting and engaging, so my wife has been there along the ride, and has been helping implement many of your suggestions. I begin medication tomorrow. P.S. Congrats on the new studio! Looking forward to what's to come!

Love your beanbag. I work from home since the pandemic and often feel guilty about wanting to work from the sofa or bed, now I am thinking about getting a beanbag and tray. I did spend a month using a shared workspace which was great but I can't afford it long term. I only have a few more weeks before I go on adoption leave so ideas for when I come back to work. Enjoy your new space

Hi, I just started my ADHD journey at 46, 5 days ago! I was listening to a BBC Sports Radio show and before the football (soccer) match commentary, they were discussing ADHD in Adults, during which they listed the symptoms and I scored 9/10, it was like a light bulb going on! So I have contacted my doctor who is referring me for ADHD assessment, which can take over 12 months for my first appointment, so a while for a confirmed diagnosis. Everything makes sense now, just wish I realised earlier. Your old video view rates will go up, as I've just subscribed, and probably like most on your channel, I have to watch each video a few times because I've zoned out for probably the 20th that day 😀. I never realised how many adults suffer. Thank you for educating the world 👍

I'm getting ready to move and I think I need to do a "Sunday" bin (or whatever day works for me) like as I'm slowly in bursts of interest packing up my current space I've realized I have several totes of miscellaneous things. I know from occasional clearing of these that I will have moments of "why?" but it worked for me to feel better about the clutter that multiplies if not taken care.
