This week on How to Cake It, I'm showing you how to make this delicious french toast cake! Not only does it have that classic french toast taste, the cake looks like a brunch-worthy dish!
I started by swirling sugar and spice into 6lbs of my Ultimate Vanilla Cake for that heavenly French Toast taste! Iced in my luscious Italian meringue buttercream, and draped in two different colors of sweet fondant, this cake is filled with extra special touches like a caramelized crust, and decadent berry compote! Plain French Toast 😅

French toast is called "lost bread" in French (pain perdu) and Dutch (verloren brood) because you usually make this with stale bread. In German, it's called "poor knight" (armer Ritter) but I have no idea where that name came from :D If I remember correctly, the Romans would prepare similar dishes in ancient times already. And it was quite a popular dish during fasting periods in Europe in the middleages because it is cheap, easy, filling and all the ingredients were allowed. At least in my family (German/Belgian), we rarely have it for breakfast but either as a light dinner or afternoon snack. Or as a "use up everything in the kitchen" meal before leaving for a trip ;)

Have you ever seen the movie "Steel Magnolias"? There was a scene with a cake in the shape of an armadillo. And it was a red velvet cake, so it looked like a real animal that was being hacked into. Have you thought about doing something like that? I know its a little on the dark side, but you could do it during Halloween month. XD
