Don't forget to give me a thumbs up and if you'd like to see more knot tying tutorials, subscribe to my channel.
Welcome to my channel How to Knot and in this video, I will be showing you how to tie a lasso. This adjustable loop is typically used in applications for ranching or farming.
Start by creating a honda knot.
This is done by first tying an overhand knot and don’t tighten it just yet.
Create a second overhang knot, but this time at the end of the tail end, this will act as a stopper.
Now feed that stopper knot under and back through the first overhand knot.
Tighten and dress accordingly.
Now take the other loose end of the rope and feed it through the honda loop.
The honda knot creates a non jamming connection, allowing the lasso to be easily adjusted to hold or release animals. The lasso is typically made of a stiff rope to help maintain it’s shape and improve usability. It’s used in applications for ranching and sporting events such as rodeos to capture cattle and other livestock.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages to consider using a lasso opposed to something like a bowline with a bite taken through it?

A bowline under constant pressure is a good knot. However, a bowline knot under changing load stresses is well known loosening then coming apart, very scary. In those situations, a bowline is an unsafe knot. For that reason many mountain climbing training classes, search and rescue training classes, swift water rescue, and the like, will not allow a bowline for human nor animal use. The Honda knot, a strong knot, their use of a stopper knot is an excellent idea. However, I disagree about using a overhand knot as a stopper knot; you want a stopper knot that will not slip apart. Overhand knots as a stopper knot also have a tendency to slip to the end of the rope then come apart. A much safer stopper knot would be a figure-eight or a longshoreman's knot, those two will not slip. Hope this helps you. When your life, someone else's life, an animal's life, is at risk, be knowledgeable which knots you use.

@@ricdonato4328 I came into the comments to ask the same question as the fellow you're replying to. The bowline, clove hitch, and half hitch have been staple knots in my line of work, but just for hoisting light objects. There is yet much to learn. Thanks for the clarifications.

Wait a minute, if all you need is a non-jamming and non-slip loop on the end of the line to feed the standing end back through, wouldn't a bowline knot to create a loop do just as well as a honda knot?
