@@sarasaicouc7272 this might be late, but they used 2 diodes to control which side of the potentiometer discharges the capacitor and which charges it, in the case of the video the right side was for discharge, without them the capacitor would always discharge through the lowest resistance side, with the diodes in place the capacitor can only discharge through the right side, even if the resistance is bigger

Can you replace with a multi-turn potentiometer to get a more precise rotation ( down to 10rpm or even 2rpm ) ? Some pots also have 5 pins ( the one you use and the multi-turn pots only have 3 ). What are the extra 2 pins for ? I have a pre-assembled module, but with my poor eyesight, the unit being so small and components covering the circuit tracks, I can't see what pins join what components ( I'm thinking of just removing the 5 pin pot on this module and replacing with a multi-turn pot, but obviously I only have three pins to attach ).

I don't understand it either, but I thought they are there to force which side the capacitor discharges through and which side it charges through... in case they weren't there, the total resistance will not be constant and therefore the frequency will change as you move the potentiometer, because the current will flow through the less resistant side.. idk if this makes sense :p
@disguisedcat17503 жыл бұрын
That would also mean you are only using half the petentiometer cuz the other half is the same as the first one but reversed. So highest resistance when potentiometer is at 50k and lowest on both 100k and 1k.

if we can control speed of motor by controling the input voltage then why we use pwm circuit for controlling its speed?
@disguisedcat17503 жыл бұрын
You can use a transistor and a potentiometer alone to control voltage input but it is inefficient and the motor will stop turning when the voltage input drops below its startup voltage. For example: a motor that needs a startup voltage of 5 volts will speed up when given higher than 5 volts without pwm, but will stop and start heating up when the voltage drops below 5. While in pwm the same motor will slow down when given a mean voltage of say 3 volts because its taking its startup voltage in pulses. pwm is the best way to control speed of motors in terms of efficiency cuz you are always able to give the motor the voltage its most efficient at while still controlling its speed.

i dont know if you answer comments, but, i have a question: so, iam running this 12V 20A network back in my garage. i want to use a DIY dremel with a 10A PWM controller, with a motor that pulls 5A no load. the question is, how much amps will the PWM pull? will it take the 10A, the 5A that the motor pulls, or will it try to take the full 20A and fry itself? please help
@disguisedcat17503 жыл бұрын
The 555 timer can only route 200mA through it, but because we are using a transistor the current will not be flowing through it, instead it will flow through the transistor. So you would just need a 20A transistor or a lower value suitable for your motor usage. your motor would probably fry TIP122 which is featured in this video cuz its rated for 5 amps and your motor pulls 5 at no load.
@littleraptor98983 жыл бұрын
@@disguisedcat1750 ahem, a motor cant overamp itself (that is not even word lol, but you get what i mean) because a motor pulls only how much it wants, not EVERYTHING available. you probably meant that the motor could overload the PWM because it will draw more than 5A when loaded, but a motor CANT pull everything you throw at it. 5A no load, it will take those 5A and not the full 20 when on no load.
@disguisedcat17503 жыл бұрын
@@littleraptor9898 i guess I am bad at explaining but that is what I meant. I said 20 amp transistor cuz their prices are pretty close so might as well get one that won't fry even if you change the motor later. I said "or a lower rated one according to your motor usage" which explained what you said cuz you cant specify 5 amps at no load cuz there is no way you have a free spinning motor :)

I just made this circuit in a perf-board (due to the lack of a breadboard) and it didn't work. After some probing around to check for connections I accidentally grounded the cathode of the diode that points away from the the Potentiometer and then the circuit started working as it was supposed to. The only difference between the circuit that was shown and the one I made are the Diodes used (1N5408 and 2x 1N4004, all from old fluorescent light drivers) and the TIP122 transistor being replaced with an MOSFET FQP30N06. Anyone have any ideas on why is that?
@disguisedcat17503 жыл бұрын
Make sure you hook the base of the mosfet to like a 1Mohm resistor to ground to prevent noise and try again. I am using the same TIP122 transistor and it didn't work for me either.. imma try grounding that and see if it works... im so mad at this stupid circuit

why can't we just use variable resistor?
@xaenon5 жыл бұрын
Variable resistors are a simple option for very low power designs. But when handling larger amounts of power, variable resistors are impractical because they need to be physically quite large, and they waste a lot of power as heat. Imagine designing a circuit that controls a 12 volt, 10 ampere DC motor. A typical 1/4 watt variable resistor would be almost instantly destroyed trying to handle that kind of power. A variable resistor for something like that would have to be very large and expensive, and it would have to dissipate a lot of heat. PWM circuits are more efficient for an application like that, because they don't waste as much power.
@cavenagy5 жыл бұрын
Why do you need the IC? Why cant you just control the voltage going to the motor with just the potentiometer.
@Tegelane55 жыл бұрын
This way it doesnt waste electricity. Transistors heatsink can also be smaller.
@disguisedcat17503 жыл бұрын
Just the potentiometer would fry your motor, you can use a potentiometer and a transistor for voltage regulation but pwm is much more efficient like the guy above me said.
