I love tuning into this channel once a year to listen to the most pessimistic anti-sailor ever. I share you the wisdom my yacht broker told me: “They don’t make em like they used to” Sure age means more things need replacing but my American made 34’ turned 40 this year and it still needs a couple fixes but she’s a gem.

Sometimes a classic sailboat is worth spending a few years on! Like a classic car, you can spend years restoring an old sports car, or you can get out your checkbook and get a brand new Honda that will be pretty low maintenance. I personally went the classics route! I’ll spend more in the end, but I know after I go over every square inch of my boat it’ll be higher quality and more inspiring to me personally. I’m glad that there are channels out there building and restoring boats that “technically” aren’t worth it. Like tallyho for instance, what that crew did made NO fiscal sense. But the history they preserved is amazing. Much more special than just going out and buying a brand new Catalina. But then again, maybe getting a brand new Catalina might be somebody else’s dream! Whatever the dream, understand the compromise you make and you’ll do alright.

Really good points. I just bought my new to me old girl, solid fiberglass (the hull alone is 1.5" thick glass) with zero coring. She is perfect for my needs, not someone else's, and came with half the aftermarket equipment that I was budgeting to install, all brand new, thanks to a dreamer who over dreamed. Their loss my gain plus the negotiated price is allowing me to finish her out and save half my purchase budget, not the upgrade/repairs budget, for actual Sailing. Best investment so far has been my Surveyor. So once I get the all clear from my Oncologist, hopefully before hurricane season, off I shall go on my never ending circumnavigation, until the lights go out.

I enjoy your channel. I want to share a story anyways. I took a maritime education in college and worked for nearly a decade on ships on deck. I liked what I did. I also travelled a lot in my free time. I travelled by backpack. I always dreamt of sailing, but it just seemed to complicated to me. Even though I worked on ships and spent my whole life on the water more or less. Sailing seemed to difficult. So I did not bother, until I met a bunch of people who were doing it. And I thought, if they can do it, I can most definitely do that! This was back in 2019. So I started the search for the perfect boat. First, I thought something around 10k, then 20k, then I found some candidates for around 35k. I made spreadsheets, went all over the place looking at different boats. I ended up buying a 1980 Sweden Yachts C34, sloop. An old but beautiful swedish lady with a teak deck, mahagny interior and what not. I know what you are thinking, but it was not the fact. I had never sailed a boat, or touched a teak deck. But still, I could see that this deck was nice. Some previous owner had spent a fortune refitting this boat out. He had replaced the teak deck in 2010, so it was only 9 years old at that point and looked great. No leaks, no nothing. Just perfect. The engine was also new from 2010, so it only had 700 hrs on it. The sails were from the same time, and in good condition. The navigation equipment was from the same time and perfectly functional. Batteries were recent, some new mattresses etc. Everything looked really good. The bilge was spotless. The owner was very competent and had followed a strict maintenance regime on the boat as well as the engine. He even wrote me a detailed handover of the products he had used and how to winterize the boat etc (Norway) I was so happy with that boat. I sailed it all over the place, thousands of nautical miles all over Norway, Sweden and Denmark. I did many upgrades, getting a dinghy with a 2,3 hp, a solar array, litium batteries etc. In the end I ended up using and sailing on the boat for 5 years, sold her this year for 45k. I have gotten kids in the meantime, and now we actually got ourselves a cruising catamaran. Just picked it up and are now out cruising. So far so good!

My philosophy... People have a habit if buying a boat that is too old and/or too big. Buy a new boat and no bigger than you can afford with cash. Sure you could get a 1980's Catalina 30 for about $15k which is the price of a Melges 15. If you get the latter, then you will get more sailing in than if you purchase the former.

Thank you so much for your information and sharing your knowledge. I hope people really understand this Sailing is great but it can be just as dangerous too. You have to know what you are buying and what you are doing. How many people start screwing with strong current and connect and mix the same thing themselves with a boat. You don't have to know everything but you have to learn from knowledgeable people otherwise it ends in a disaster... Greetings from a Swedish viking

Wanted a sailboat all my life but couldn’t afford one! Now I can, I studied the situation and concluded real sailing is for people who didn’t really earn their money ( think about it). Then there’s people sailing other peoples boats ( delivery etc) for the people who didn’t really earn their money! Then there’s the rest picking up the cast offs to fill their dream! My conclusion is if your not filthy rich sailing is one big shakedown. Also, have you ever really thought about why a person drives a USED top of the range Range Rover ( or other luxury vehicle) ……. Because they can’t afford a NEW one. Buying a used boat is the same, someone else’s cast offs! My advice: buy a log burner, get new slippers and a cat for company, save £50/100k watch KZbin 😂

I love my 30’ electric sailboat. However, this is our sailing envelope: - we’re on a lake on the Saint Lawrence river (west of Montreal) - we weekend sail and marina hop. - we have enough battery storage for any “full day” outing. - the boat is berthed in a slip and has access to shore power for charging. - a 2000w portable generator is plenty to keep us going on weekend adventures. I can imagine a long term, live-aboard sailboat, but such a beast is not yet ready for the average sailing couple. There is a future in electric auxiliary blue water sailboats, but it’s still at the “early adopter” phase, and cruising plans are still governed largely by the requirements of the energy storage system. Two generations of battery tech until it’s ready. Another generation or two of control systems. And then the time it takes for coats to come down into the reach of average “2nd hand sailboat buyers”.
@Garfield.Farkle3 күн бұрын
The way it looks to me is the only advantage to buying an old boat is the expense of sailing it is stretched out over time. A major negative to that approach is important things on the boat are not going to fail very often in the marina. I see sailing as divided into 3 groups: One is the super rich who have a swimming pool, helicopter, and a dinghy with a dinghy on their boat, plus a crew in uniforms. Two is the wealthy who can drop a couple hundred grand on a yacht to either be a weekend toy for party excursions or do serious ocean-crossing sailing. Three are the blue collar-type sailors who can enjoy an old jalopy that mainly just needs to float. The first two can gripe about the expense of boat repair, but have plenty of dough. The folks in the third group scrape by somehow until they can't.

Hey Chris... I used to watch a whole bunch of those other youtube channels before I bought my boat, I wanted a "bluewater cruiser," (whatever that is...), and every time I came to your channel I'd get annoyed because it was always a reality check. Well, I kept coming back to your channel anyway because I knew I was hearing what I needed to hear versus what I wanted to hear. I ended up buying a boat you had gone over in one of your videos, only spending half of what I had budgeted originally. I sailed the shit out of my boat all last season...multiple times per week and many 3-5 day trips. 37' Sun Odyssey. I now single-hand her all by myself and this Winter I'm refitting her exactly the way I want to for my needs with the money I saved by not overextending myself based on hype. I'm greatly looking forward to sailing my boat with a finely tuned rig and sensible upgrades this upcoming season. The rig will be humming... a little cruising code action, asym as well... enough solar, but nothing crazy, and I've been learning to do all my own preventative maintenance. A lot of people rag on you because you call out all the bullshit. Keep calling it out. Happy sailing!

Good to hear. I have owned small boats. And aim to get a live aboard boat to cruise on asap. I am not young. I fell for all the BS and wanted a boat like Atticus. But this channel has changed my perception 100%. Yes I want to cross oceans… BUT only to get to another area to stay for a number of years. Once you work out that in a slow circumnavigation of around a decade you will only be truly off shore for a few months you start to look at boats very differntly.

Appropos of your introductory comments, I bought a 1987 P-18 for about 6,000, completely refit, easy to work on for anything additional, and the only thing that will keep me from sailing it for the next 20 years, likely, is the fact that I'm 67. Point is it's a small boat, not one you'd ever live aboard or designed cross open ocean. Trailer sailer sleeps 2 sails beautifully.

Did you see the episode just before they crossed the Atlantic with their hired captain? They went on a modern yacht of similar length to theirs for some drinks. Her face and her comments did not bode well. She loved it. I don’t blame her for wanting off that boat. For me the lack of space and having to clamber up a ladder to get onboard would kill the experience. He really drank the salty sea dog BS. Love, hate or simply accept catamarans… compare Atticus to Nahoe, who started as a couple on a Lagoon 410 and now sail with two youngsters. You only have to watch the cats on passage to see the kids playing in the cockpit while mum is cooking. Meanwhile the monohulls, especially the older ones they are usually laying about moaning about not being able to cook and feeling ill. Even Delos was like that on ocean passages. I am convinced Atticus would still be sailing if they had a modern boat with space, more stability and a sugar scoop.
