How to Sail Oceans

How to Sail Oceans

Күн бұрын

So whilst I'm pondering how to transit the St. Peter's lock without inboard power, my friend Joe on Resolution shows up. They're headed to Newfoundland but taking the scenic route through the Bras d'Or lakes. Joe agrees to lend me his RIB with a 15hp Yanmar to push Ruth Avery through the lock. And so I arrive on these magical inland lakes ready to explore, but I first have to wait out a screaming nor'easter.

I was just up the lake from you in my boat, don't know how you can sleep in that wind it was so crazy. But yes the holding is great for most of the lake from my limited time sailing here.

Crafty way through the canal. Some nasty winds there. At least sheltered. What kinda wind speeds did you see?

Well done navigating the lock; I was wondering how you would manage that. That said, I am imagining you climbing back and forth between the RIB and Ruth Avery nervously in and out of neutral. One day I will get to those lakes by boat. I have visited by car…. I have roots in the Mahone bay. One day I hope to cross paths with you to share our common ground. Until then, all the best of Christmas to you and the fair Ruth Avery!

The first problem I ran into was that it pushed me in circles, but that was a matter of adjusting the angle of the outboard. After that, worked like a charm. Happy holidays, Charlie.

Hmmm...a screaming nor'easter - u don't say? I know I've seen this line somewhere on your channel. I've heard Up a Creek without a Paddle before- but Up a Lock without a motor is sorta new one to me. Always an adventure when one of your notifications pops up on my screen. My first thought is- What has Kevin gotten himself & RA into this time? Entertaining I'll bet. I hope you're warm & relaxed somewhat - cause its cold as hell here. Hang in there partner.

Ha, ha, well I have a paddle but it's not quite up to the job of getting me through that lock. The 15hp Yamaha did the trick. Thanks for stopping by. Happy Holidays.

Resolution is also a beautiful vessel. How was it down below during the storm? Can you still make food or is it uncomfortable?

Yep, Cape Dory 45, the nicest one they made I think. It wasn't bad, the lakes are sheltered, but after seeing that boat break loose I worried about the mooring all night ...
