From from one idyllic anchorage to the next, I move my way northward through the Bras d'Or lakes. While it may appear all perfectly carefree, the Bras d'Or lakes pose some rather tricky challenges for the engineless sailboat. One is passing through the road and rail bridge at Grand Narrows. It is not only narrow, but the currents can be strong and unpredictable.

Great video! I have been sailing Nova Scotia waters for the last decade and have to say the places you go with no engine takes a lot of balls. The one thing I have learned in my time sailing these waters is you pretty much can never trust any wind predictions. The wind can be very localized.

Kevin, to answer your question, “Yes, I’m entertained.” I admire your moxie of sailing through an open bridge and certainly understand your nervousness about it because I’m nervous when motoring through a bridge opening. Never sailed through one and never seen it done on the Chesapeake where I sail. Not sure the bridge tenders would be happy about but again, never tried it. Hope you’re keeping warm down in Beaufort and Happy New Year!

Those bridges under sail are stressful. I remember sailing under an opening bridge in clearwater fla , tons of car traffic backed up, and had to tack slowly through with perfect timing. Luck was on my side and just made it under before the folks on the road started throwing stuff at the little sailboat that was holding up their evening commute. My mate, used to power boat life, went below incase he be recognized. But captain and dog cared not once committed to the endeavor. Fair wind, and thanks for the videos.

You need a friend who is sailing around the world and visit for a couple months a year. Then you don’t need the hassle or expense of owning your own boat. He or she might like the company for a change.

At ~7:55, it looks like you're wearing a Westsail T-shirt. How would you compare the overall sailing performance of Ruth Avery and a WS32? I think a W32 might be a lot heavier, but with a larger sail area(?)
