I'm not alone in being impressed by your abilities, Kevin, but to just now realize that you do everything left handed! Well, my respect has only grown. Thanks for sharing more of your story.

I sailed those waters back in the sixties on my gaff-rigged Tahiti Ketch...but with an old (even then) hand crank started diesel. You are a very brave and competent sailor, and I admire the beauty of your gaffer.

Summer of 1972 spent 9 weeks at Tabor Academy "Sea Rangers" Tabor Boy program for 15-18 year olds boys, I was 15. Tied knots for a week, raced 30 foot Shields for a week, obtained SCUBA certification, learned to sail, Tabor Boy up to Camden ME with stops in CT yacht clubs which were heavenly, sailed to Bermuda, dived wrecks in 40 feet of water, rented moped, could buy beer in pubs, returning from Bermuda to Marion MA on Buzzards Bay had the 500hp GMC diesel wide open in rough rolling seas got sea sick as I had manual dish washing duty and watching the water in the dual sinks makes ya run up the companionway and blow beats overboard. Captain Glaser put up with zero talk back, sir. Yes, she had four square sails and I loved working them 90% sure I would not survive a fall onto the steel cabin top or deck (probably an un-insureable risk so good bye square rig) also loved the crow's nest and regularly took 15 minute intervals looking out at the curve in the horizon from the high vantage point realizing I knew how to sail and could go anywhere in the world in a sailboat a fantastic escape from adolescent suburbia and my overall best summer.

That's awesome! My father's friend was Toby Baker, who taught math at Tabor and coached sailing. He might have been there when you were.

Haven't been inside the lagoon yet, tough without an engine. I can remember anchoring there in the summer on my dad's boat. Was usually a zoo, anchors got tangled, etc.
