Yeah. I am careful with my dogs when they are puppies. So no sustained running, biking, jumping, stairs etc. But with a high energy pup from a high energy breed, 15 min of walking 2 times a day turns him into a little furry demon. Training to "find calm", brain games, learning commands and so on all help. But not enough. In the end I resorted to adding a daily 30 min snuffle walk on a long leash on a soft surface (grass). It also helps that this walk is his favorite thing in the world. Both him and I are much happier now and I believe it is a relatively safe solution.

I got into the bath, finished showering (around 30 mins) and then came out, she was still playing and running around. She refused to stop until I picked her up and stopped her myself. Then and only then she calmed down. Btw, my puppy is 6 months old.

I have a very strong 12 week female lab, who gets the zoomies just about every night, sometime goes on the 30 minutes. we go for walks, play fetch, but the zoomies running around like mad she is very rough when running. Rough as in biting and tearing cloths. So now she goes in the play pen to release the energy. This biting was getting full on, drawing blood with real force when going nuts. When calm no biting so it was for play but was frightening aggressive

I’ve heard some internet hearsay that mini/toy breeds growth plates close significantly earlier. Also, how could the 5 minute rule possibly apply to all dogs? Maybe you’d want to exercise a pug less than that and a border collie more than that? I take my 3 mo mini Aussie on 2-4 mile walks everyday but she’s still super energetic, pulling on the leash the whole way home and going crazy when she gets home. Should I reduce her exercise?

What about when your puppy just likes to jump? Whenever I pull out a treat when we're training, he gets excited and jumps in the air.
@HowToTrainADreamDog2 жыл бұрын
Jumping is a dog’s natural response when something is exciting, or even scary. We can help them redirect their enthusiasm and teach them how to do something else that fits a little better into our human world. When we work on a skill like this we have to learn what our dog's threshold is and work way back from the excitement of people or other dogs or food. Gradually over time we increase distractions and close in on the high level excitement. It can take weeks to months depending on how frequently you train. If your dog gets attention when jumping, even if to be pushed off or told “no”, this could be rewarding for your dog… and your dog will continue to jump. During this time of training it will be important to manage the space so your dog doesn’t get to jump on things like furniture or people or putting paws on counters. That would reinforce this habit. This video can give you some more ideas on how we help our puppies have better manners, and our online course will give you the step by step of how to get there. They have to tell you the safest possible information. Kind of like McDonalds having to say "cautious: contents hot" on their coffee - no shit, but it covers them from liability. My dog was 10 weeks, a couple days post his first round of shots, and we went on long walks everywhere.
@mannycalavera23352 жыл бұрын
Yes there is a risk. So if you want to be 100% certain your puppy wont get sick you cant go out. But in my opinion, the risk of undersocializing your dog is also a real one. For me, what makes sense is a balanced approach where you avoid the biggest risk areas but also dont lock your puppy inside your home during his or her entire 12-16 week socialization period. That is insane to me unless you live in an area with a particularly high risk of parvo for example. For example, by the time my puppy is 16 weeks old he is already socializsd with other dogs and all common things in his direct outside environment such as horses, bikes, cars and such. By 20 weeks I feel like that entire socializagion period is pretty much done.

Hi Dan. We at How to Train a Dream Dog value safety and give training advice based on science and 20+ years of experience. Things may appear fine until they aren't, and it is your responsibility as a dog owner to know the risks involved to keep your puppy safe. Your puppy could easily injure themselves if you push them too hard too young, and while you may not see the effects right away, they can show up later in life.
