Hi, you might want to use pinspots with a smaller angle which just fill the surface of the ball. So you avoid the black shadow area behind the mirror ball.

There's a battery version motor from ADJ & several other manufacturers. My Duracel "D" sizel battery lasts about 2-3 months before replacement if used 3 days a week (Fri Sat Sun ). Also look for a 1.5 - 2 RPM Motor so you won't become Dizzy.

I've decided on purchasing a 16" Disco ball, but wondering if you could tell me what would be better, 2-15W Pinspots, or 1-40W Pinspot, or 2-40W, or would the 40W be too much. Lights will be mounted between 6' and 8' on either side of the ball. Thank you for your time, John.

ADJ & other manufacturers do sell a 1.5 - 2 RPM MOTOR (1 BATTERY VERSION ) I own a few, the D size Duracell last a few months with Fri - Sun only use. Easier than running a power cord for mobile DJ and permanent use. A Mirror Ball up to 12" maximum because of its weight only.

I have a single can light with it's own wall switch...wonder if there's a way to install the motor in the can/hardwire it. Do you think that would work?

Yes that's an easy installation, they sell a cover plate @ Lowes, Home Depot, Ace Hardware etc. for the resecced ceiling light (If it's a hanging can light, then is not recommended due to the mirror ball weight) there is also an adapter that screws into the socket for power.
