My oldest plant is my grandmother's Hoya carnosa. It is 60+ years old. The blooms are my first memory of my grandmother's house. She had a love for all plants that was passed down to my dad and I. Now I have over a dozen Hoyas and over 300 plants in my house.❤🌿🌱

TERESA PARKER hey Teresa! Hoping I can learn from your wisdom/experience. I just received a Hoya obovata in the mail bare root. The plant came packaged beautifully, was potted in an airy soil and bottom watered once since it was received 1 week ago...but today I woke up and the plant had completely defoliated other than one top leaf (lost around 5). It is in a south facing window pulled back 2 feet with a semi-sheer curtain blocking the direct light (our light is also not that great in the winter so it is closer now than I would place it in the summer). Is this normal behavior? The roots looked amazing upon initial inspection. Did I do something wrong (other than ordering plants online during the winter)? And yes, it was shipped with a heatpack. Feeling like a Hoya killer...thanks for your help!

My hoyas are very trailing/climbing with heavy waxy leaves. They are all from one original plant, so they are all the same species, whatever that is! Most have an east exposure and these started to bloom when I was misting my Monstera and crotons and got some mist on the Hoya leaves. Once it bloomed those pretty two-toned pink flowers, I figured out the magic sauce was the misting! I mist the leaves daily and it blooms year-round! I am glad to hear that letting the pots dry out between watering is best. I never realized the epiphytic nature of these plants until I watched your video. Good info! Thank you!

I live with a variegated Hoya Carnosa who has grown well and is very tendril forward. She wraps them around the poles of the rolling wardrobe rack. She also reaches out for the ferns on the shelf below her and gently holds hands. I learned a lot today...i took notes and am looking forward to learning more.

Thank you for your very informative video. I have a Hoya that I grew from a cutting a friend gave me over 30 years ago. For most of these years it was in a room with east facing windows . It grew nicely but never bloomed. Then 7 years ago I moved and the plant was in an even darker room for a year until I moved into the apartment that I am now. The Hoya is now at an south facing window , very bright , but direct sun only early morning and late afternoon. It took only a few month in the new place until the flowering started! 20-30 flowers at once and as soon as one flower is done , another one comes up. Going from end of March until late October . Going on for 6 years now. I love the scent that starts in the late evening! I love my Hoya!

Wow, from 2 yrs ago and I just found it.......lol Perfect timing as we just got back into our hometown. We bought one of these (carnosa I believe) when we moved into our last home in 1996. We found it at a yard sale and it was quite large compared to the ones you showed here. It was in a ceramic pot and the man had started it the previous summer when his wife passed away and it was something she had been doing at the time. Anyway, he told us all about when they had found it 50 years before and that he still enjoyed it. He said if I could get it to bloom I'd be 'joyfully surprised'.....it finally bloomed after about 7 years or so. The blooms didn't even look real. I took pictures and nobody would believe it was a real plant. It sat outside our greenhouse on the plant tables. I don't have any pictures to share as, sadly, we lost our home and everything inside and out, (we did get our cat) in the Camp fire of 11/08/2018. Actually, it was our home, street, neighborhood, town and surrounding communities. A bit challenging times right now but I so enjoyed this. Thank you so much for all the knowledge you share. It's nice to be my age (70) and be able to learn so much about plants. We have a lot of plants to replenish in our home!..seriously, thank you again. remember to breathe........

Hello Summer, thank U for the clear repotting instruction. Over the years I found I have that many plants and don't know what to do with them. Most are grown in hanging baskets with a water holding base. They grow so well and are huge. The pots get so heavy with all the tendrils cascading over the sides. The ones with the huge leaves seem to have very small flowers and the common canessa have fairly good size clumps of pink flower. They all in my back patio where they the filtered pm sun. I am now overwhelmed by quantity of plants just from 2-3 cuttings. Not many seem to like growing them because they are not showy like petunias. Thank U. Mary from Queensland, Australia.

This was a lovely video! I've been growing hoya for 20 years. It's pretty much all I grow. Though, I only have about 30 varieties, I like the leaves more than the flowers. Your video was a major blessing. I was given a rooted hoya by a friend about 10 years ago. I knew nothing about them so I planted mine in a really large container. BIG MISTAKE! It has grown until it looks like a jungle unto itself and just began to bloom (sparsely) about 3 years ago. I now understand that I can prune my plant to a manageable size and root cuttings to share with friends. Had I known earlier I could have donated some to a local animal shelter for their annual fund raising event. Oh well, next year.

Thank you so much for the inspiration 😍 Lots of love, Louise from Sweden

If it grows that long just hanging, it could weigh so much that it pulls itself off the shelf. The pot, soil roots and trunk of my huge Hoya Carnosa weighs less than the mass of 10 to 15-feet long vines.

I've just started on Hoyas. I bought some of the most common. H. cumingiana (my very first), H. pubicalyx (which the seller is not sure if a red dragon or a black dragon), H. carnosa, H. buotii, H. mindorensis and another one I forgot. So I'm still studying about the proper care and best potting mix to use. Among them, H. cumingiana I bought in a very tightly packed soil from a seller, which was commented upon by another seller who said that I can put charcoal underneath the pot when I transplant it so it wouldn't be too heavy and compacted. Thank you for the basic info!!! And I hope other planters can reply to my comment on the better potting media they use for each species I mentioned. I also just bought some media: pumice stones, vermicasts and coco peat. I will try to make my own mix and see what works. :D

Great plants! They are like the "peperomia" of my collection. No fuz and can take some time with no pampering. Have had an awful lot of problem with my poor peperomias so this is one of my best choices for "low maintenance" plants!

Quite new to keeping house plants and only got my first Hoya a couple of weeks ago. I’ve certainly been hooked on them and now have three and looking for more. It’s now the first thing I look for when I go to a garden centre and am disappointed if they don’t have any! Thanks for the video. I found it very helpful for my ongoing Hoya journey💚

Of course, I was gifted a crimson princess cutting - and I love it. I started looking more, and absolutely fell in love with the fish tail hoya - I don't think I'll ever find one, but it's a wish list plant. My love for aquatic life and plant compels me to obtain one some day!

Brava!!!👏 Such much great information in this video! I grow lobbii & multiflora. Guess I'm a terrestrial kind of guy. I think that happened because when I first got into the world of plants hoya fanatics kind of freaked me out. I'm a weird plant geek but hoya people take it to another level! 😆

Awesome video, I have one Hoya Carnosa that is growing rapid and in a lovely way, a friend gave some leaves last year but it was not a successed but I didn't give up, I repot it in a small pot and different soil and now they have some new leaves. Those one didn't like the terracotta pot so I repotted them on plastic and it has a success. I am so happy, I hope one day in the close future they can bloom. Now I am propragating some in water and soon I will repot them. ;) Thanks for all the great information.

The first time I saw a Hoya was around 7 years ago, what caught my eye was the flower 🥰😍 I called it an alien plant before I found out what it actually was. I of course tried to propagate it asap & was successful & today I have maybe 5 & have only seen 2 of them flower. They’re definitely a very slow growing plant.

iddybiddyladybug Leeza The reason they don’t bloom is because they need to be put through at least six weeks of very cool temperatures like 45 and darkness it’s like a Christmas cactus you have to force them to bloom I had one for 26 years never bloomed but then I found out it Hass to be put through dormancy

Thank you for your very informative videos. They are quite helpful. Approximately 2 months ago I purchased my 1st hoya- a krimson Queen which is doing quite well and I have not repotted it as yet as it is unnecessary. Today I received my 2nd hoya - a Krimson Princess. I don't plan to repot it yet but am wondering if I can add coco coir to the 1/3 mix soil in your video and change the proportions to 1/4 each. Would this soil mixture be okay? Appreciate your help. Want to be a great plant mom like you.

Following. Would like to know about the coco coir as well. I too have a Hoya Carnosa tricolor (Queen) and an Exotica (Princess). My first Hoyas purchased together. They are both so beautiful. ✨🌱✨

This has never been a plant that caught much of my attention, but now it has. Good video, I really love when you share your knowledge on the more scientific aspect of the plant. Also, it makes me laugh when you show us your different potting mixes, I suddenly feel like I'm watching a cooking show. Keep up the great work!!!

I have never owned a Hoya. I'd never even seen one in person until today! I saw a Hoya Carnosa Crimson Princess in a hanging pot at WalMart for $15 it was beautiful😍😍. I have heard that hoyas are prone to mealy bugs. I have about 30 plants to keep track of, none have had any pests except fungus gnats. I was always terrified of hanging plants because of what could be under them🤣. So I start all my hangers with a 2-4 inch pot so I can carefully check them. I know, prob sounds crazy but I am not afraid of the ones I've grown myself. (Pothos, philodendrons and tradescantias are my faves). But that Hoya oh boya I may have to start small. I think I'm in love 💘
