Hello! Today I decided to make a more useful video and tell you, from my experience, what are some hoyas that need more water and how to grow them - especially challenging for us who underwater!
🧚🏻‍♂️ More info below!🧚🏻‍♂️

I have been using MARS hydro lights for over a year now and I am loving how my plants grow under them! They grow faster than before and all the hoyas get lovely foliage. They also bloom more often than they ever did - some I was not able to bloom until I put them under these lights and they also bloom very early on, often as soon as they are rooted, while they are still small plants.

I find that big leaf Hoyas need more water because even if they aren't thick like H. obovata or kerrii, they have a lot of volume to keep hydrated.

It always confused me when people say do not over water your Hoyas🤔. I lived in Asia for half of my life and Hoyas are being rained on 9 months of a year. So definitely they like water but it should be in a well draining media😁.

So more frequent.... but this ? my question. I get a nice chunky mix.. i water and it runs thru immediately..how much do i let it run thru before walking away? Shouldnl itnstill feel heavy? Do i let it run thru and walk away?
@jezackr3500
@jezackr3500 7 ай бұрын
@dana102083 if you let the water run through and get rid of the excess from the saucer, that should be okay. As long as the substrate is wet, but there's no standing water it should be fine:)

I totally agree with you. I have experienced this. I followed the entire “let your Hoyas dry out. Shock them into blooming” advice. I am an chronic under water as well. My most of my Hoyas suffer slow growth and not 1 bloom. A few weeks ago I increased watering. All my Hoyas are showing new growth. I have killed 3 caudata hoyas. Hind sight is 20/20. I under watered it. I have very common hoyas. I had a Hoya Chelsea that had 2 leave for a year. I recently put it in a plastic bag. It almost immediately put out new growth. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Not sure if you mentioned it, but H. obscura is one I've heard people struggle with. I decided to "over water" it, and sure enough it's growing beautifully under my grow lights (AND despite the 20% humidity cause, "Oh Canada"! It's almost wintertime!) I also sing "thirsty" songs to them, like "Rain on me"... it was one time, and there were no audible objections. They also grew exceptionally well the following week. That's a tip only us "pros" know, though... Always a treat to sit down and watch your videos! :)

Lots of interesting stuff you've given us, and I thank you for taking the time to present the material so well. This past summer, the Hoya Australis (I think) wanted water nearly every day and has consequently exploded with vigorous growth, having had three blossomings. It is the size of a bass viol, one leader playing with the ceiling. Vancouver, Canada. Even though we are in late November, she is growing new leaves and producing vast systems of leaders. Large plastic pot, orchid-mix with potting soil and some sand. Some of her leaves are huge for the variety. She has devoured the two bamboo trellises I provided, and some of her older branches are beautifully grotesque and seem to have a blatant agenda - the takeover of the entire apartment building. This year I found some new varieties (late to the game), and now have four kinds. Two of them are in clay pots, but they are glazed, so do not absorb water - and they are beautiful. My feeling with them (as a novice) is that if one gives them a large pot, they will spend time looking dormant, but they love to investigate their medium, growing roots like mad. Once they've a good grasp of their home, they become unstoppable, seemingly with an uncanny strength. Your collection is amazing - way beyond the capacities of my dwelling - and it is evident the pleasure you take with your babies.💐

This was great Miro, super informative. I started collecting Hoyas in 2020 (I didn’t understand the appeal until then 🤷‍♀️) and I totally underwatered them for the first year. In 2021 I moved to self watering pots with organic soil and I was amazed at the speed of growth and the size of my leaves! I’ll never go back to pots that aren’t self watering 👍

I think my Hoya Australis Lisa is a thirsty one. It was doing ok when I used to water my plants more frequently but now that I'm lazier, it keeps dropping it's new leaves. Unexpected for me: I haven't had my pachyclada long, but the bottom leaves soften up so much in between waterings, and when I notice that has happened and water promptly, it seems happy. In my home, it seems to need water more frequently than many of my other Hoya.

First I have to say if Hoyas are in the correct well draining drying soil / substrate they need to be watered , a lot lol!! I hate when people say “dry as a bone” no lie!!! Second 😊 People may come for me , but I will say the Hoyas that I ignore (I know it’s sad ) are the ones that bloom and seem the happiest , even with pests . It drives me nuts!!! The ones I treat and water the correct way, just grow nice but never bloom . So this is making me angry hahahaha!!!! Anyone else agree? Just me? Okay 👌🏼

Hi, Miro, long time viewer, first time commenting. I love your videos, they are so helpful, informative, funny... Thank you! I have a H. Crinkle Eight that I kept bone dry between waterings following recommendations. It did nothing for me for months, like a plastic plant. I decided to water it weekly and it is a miracle, shooting vines and new leaves all over. I really don't believe in the taco test, it is maybe enough to keep the plants alive, but not thriving. For me, at least, the secret is well drained soil. Water them, drain well. They will thank you.
@BasiePlants

@@BasiePlantsHi Miro! I aquired a small Krinkle 8 in a large terra cotta pot. I was told it didn't grow. The soil looks moderately chunky. I hate terra cotta for mold and for not being able to feel the weight to judge it's moisture content (maybe just me; they alwaysfeel heavy). I haven't got around to repot it, but I placed it in bright indirect light and have given it frequent waterings. It has been thriving beyond my expectations!

Thoughts on endauensis? Small leaf so maybe more water. I barely had mine a month and leaves started to yellow at the base. It was in moss and bark mix. I neither over nor underwatered IMO so maybe transplant shock, I don’t know. In Ikea grow cabinet with temps 68-75F and humidity 50-78% and under Barina LED grow light. When I knew it was more likely I couldn’t save it, I took healthy cuttings from it. Now just two weeks later, about half of the cuttings have rooted. Those rooted in pon and the ones in moss-bark mix rooted faster, the ones in water still zero.

Dude I have a Hoya obavata that's always crazy thirsty. I can completely soak the soil every day and it's dry within 24 hours. It's massive, root bound, grows like crazy, and is in a terracotta pot. I would have to work SUPER hard to over water it. My hoya linearis loves water, too. it's about to flower and it's screaming for water daily.

Oh, don’t get me wrong, mine gets dry 😂 But it won’t throw a tantrum if you don’t water it on time like most (if not all) hoyas on this list will 😬
@walle5667

Give it a bigger pot. I don't think it is too lovely for the plant to be that root bound. I'm also not sure the plant will get properly hydrated like that. My Carnosa went through a phase where no matter how much I watered it was always dry and the leaves started to shrivel despite daily watering. Took me a while to realize what was up. Bigger pot, problem solved.
@Lorenmcdee
@Lorenmcdee 2 жыл бұрын
@@walle5667I honestly don't have room for it to be in a bigger pot and it seems very happy. It grows so much that I'm taking while tendrils as cuttings every weekend for friends recently and it's still hitting the ceiling from sitting on the window sill. She's so crazy I'm doing experiments on her like clipping the tips of tendrils to see what happens and if the leaves develop faster/slower without the growth point at the end. She gets loads of food and light and I put worm castings on the surface whenever I can. Honestly she's so big I'm going to have to just start over with some cuttings and sell her. She's taken over 3/4 of the window. I got her in a 6" pot last year and she's just a crazy ass beast. She spans at least 4' wide and 6' tall. She's wrapping around all of my hanging plants (why I'm cutting tendrils) and I can't even untangle her from the hanging plants directly above her. She's curled up onto the curtain rod.

Thank you for this, I expected that already concerning the underwatering, but now it's for sure ;) And on the other side I'm really afraid about overwatering and rot roots (lots of my hoyas aren't in mineral substrate, and I heard you saying to not change the substrate where the hoyas have been grown). I didn't see if you already made one video about it but now since I'm using for few months some grow lights for the first time in my life, I'm wondering what kind and how much light the different hoyas really need. I have for instance one hoya bella and one Hoya-IPPS-7750-Sulawesi that are under a strong grow light, but only 12 hours a day, the whole winter, so not so high temperatures, and they both seemed to really like it - even if I forgot to water them a lot, and the hoya bella was and is (!) even flowering a bit all these colder months. On the other side, all others hoyas that are under, I guess, less powerful grow lights don't seem to have really reacted at all, in bad or good, beside some leaves sun stress (hoya serpens, hoya parasitica black edge. Lighting issue all depends about the balance togehter with watering and temperature (and pot size), as you remind here too, but this is a bit stressing.

Miro, I took screen shots of all the lists! Thank you for the information. I use the Sustee Aquameters for my Hoyas and wait a day or so after the indicator turns white which means they need to be watered. Will you do a video on Hoyas that do not like extra water? My Hoya Rotundiflora died and I don’t know if I under it overwatered it. ☹️

I have a curtisii that I can't get right...the stems are very thin, and the leaves are small but thick-ish. I've had it both go yellow from overwatering, and crispy from waiting too long to give it a drink. Should I water when the pot is dry half-way down? 3/4 dry? Help! She's still full-looking, with vines that trail about 10 inches down the rim of the pot, but it's slowly getting balder from my inconsistent watering.

I live in Southern Australia, my hoyas all live outside, some in the rain, I now know that I haven't overwatered, more likely underwatered. How do you tell the difference between overwatered and underwatered hoyas

What do you use to spray for mites. I just started with sulfer funguside mixed in water. I understand I’ll have to do it every 7 days for 6 weeks to get rid of them

Miro, why does underwatering put you at risk for mites? Why is everyone suddenly talking bout those flat mites? Ty

Drina hasn't reached out yet? They should. When you also said "We don't get them here . I don't know why" . 100% can relate. Applicable to almost ever thing. 😑 Plus LOL that random revving motor in front your house.....ugh I hate those too 😒

So do you have a humidifier in your grow tent? I'm trying to find a balance in my cabinets. Of course the humidity goes up after watering. When the humidity gets down to about 50 percent I have these moss pouches I made with the mesh used to make moss poles. I guess I'm worried it will get too humid and then the hoyas will dry out slower than normal. Any advice would be appreciated.

Make sure to check for mites in that case, they could cause that. But also, irregular watering.

Miro, this video has helped me so, so much! So much good information. That explains why I’m having to water so often. I have a lot of mine in terracotta. You answered so many of my questions with just this video. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I just got a Hoya Bella and didn’t really know if I should let it get real dry before watering. You probably saved it’s life. Take care. Hair gorgeous as always. 💚🪴🌿🌱💚
